    1. [DOWNING-L] Iowa Downings
    2. carl waugh
    3. Sue and all looking for Iowa Downings, I have an old Adams Co., Iowa history book that I found the following: Albert Downing, proprietor of a meat market at Corning, Iowa was born in Indiana in 1848. Son of Albert and Sarah Moore Downing, natives of Virginia, who was noted for their piety and strict adherence to the teachings of the Christian Church. His father died in 1862, and his mother is still living, in Cedar Co., Iowa. Mr. Downing, the subject of this sketch, is the third-born of six sons. Coming to Iowa thirty seven years ago, he grew up in Cedar Co. After twenty-two years of farm life he came to Corning, Iowa and began his present business, in which he is prospering. In 1889-90 he was Mayor of Corning and a liberal thinker on all subjects. In 1871 he married Miss Mary Brown, a native of Iowa, and they have four children, Albert, Lulu, Adell, Clyde Leroy and Nora May. I found the following from an old Tipton newspaper, June 12, 1914; Six sons of Albert and Sarah Moore Downing who came to Cedar Co., Iowa, two miles N. of Bennett, Iowa sixty years ago have enjoyed a reunion in Tipton this week. 1. Alexander G. Downing, now lives in Des Moines, Iowa 2. John, is a resident of Springdale Twp. 3. George, of Iowa City, Iowa 4. Paul of Tipton, Iowa 5. Albert of Corning, Iowa 6. Andrew, of Corning, Iowa In 1852 Albert Downing and Jacob Moore entered five quarter sections in a body in Springfield and Inland Twp. First settled by Albert and his three brothers-in-law, Jacob Moore, Sinickson Sparks and Isaac Kelly. Albert moved his family from Greene Co., Ind. with ox team on June 11, 1854 and remained until death July 14, 1877. Sarah died Feb. 13, 1903. Note: Cedar Co., Iowa is the same county I have found family of Mary Downing who's sister Elizabeth m. James McClelland. Some of this family are in Guthrie Center, Iowa and some I have contacted went to Colorado. Mary Downings family are distant cousins someway to the Casey, Iowa Downings that are descended from Joseph, b. 1748 and Jemima Woodward. Ruby Waugh , Iowa

George and Lavinah VonBuskirk Downing were married in 1852. He was born in Pike Co OH to John and Mary Boiler Downing and died in Collins, IA 1904...also lived Hancock Co OH ca 1831, and went to Story County, at Collins IA about 1872. Their children, some of them buried in Iowa, are Mary Amanda Williams, David Thomas Downing, Eleanor Mead, Nancy Jane Day, William Sumner, Ellsowrth Downing who married Laura L. Brown, Grant Downing who did not marry, and John Henry Downing who died in Wiley CO 1950. Research on this family was done by Ethel Downing Davis, dau of Ellsworth, some years ago. Another son of John and Mary Boiler Downing, William Downing and his wife Eliza Jane Green left Pike County OH and went to Hancock Co, OH then to Morris Co KS. William served in the Kansas legislature. Their children mostly lived in KS. William's brother Isaac also went to Kansas to join his brother with his father. And their brother Timothy Downing married to Mary Wood went to Kansas and on the the west, or at least his wife Mary went on to WA and OR. 2. Sherry, I don't recognize any of your Downing names. If you come across some of mine before I get a good chance to do some looking would you drop me a note? Morean/Morian Downing born 1816 KY; lived for a while in Davies County MO. Can't find him after 1860. Maybe he went to Iowa. He married Lydia Ann Brunk in 1842 in Davies Co. They have: Samuel, born 1846; John, born 1848, and Ellen, born 1850; James, Sanford, Morian, Jr. ? and William Austin Downing, all born after 1850. I have nothing at all for Samuel, John and Ellen. a little on Sanford and much on William, in my family line. Morean's daddy was Powhatan "Puck" Downing. Don't know where he died. I recently learned some of his descendants are buried in Brown Cemetery (Hillcrest now) in Daives County. But not Morean. Morean had brothers: John, Charles, Cravins, and Powhatan, Jr, for sure. 2. What about the name "Powhatan", giving that name to a child, or putting it in a child's name, such as John Walker Fullerton P.(Powhatan) Downing. He was born before the Civil War. Can anyone offer an explanation for this combination? Sue Hodnett

Any one else have any <middle name> Ellsworth's in their lines? Any ideas? Ray Downing>> The name Ellsworth originates with the tradition of naming a son after the first Union casuality in the Civil War. Colonel Elmer Ellsworth was killed by Confederate forces when he crossed into Virginia and tried to remove a rebel flag. Using his name honored his memory.

They migrated north to Iowa. Check the next census on surrounding states and look for the given names of known Missouri brothers living in the same county. I'd check Iowa first. I've found a lot of Downings there who are not from my line. Jim Downing Sarasota, FL

That marriage date was from the IGI, so, be wary of it until you can back it up with a better source. But, it does tie in with the birth of Virgie. I think the Richardson surname is a more likely bet than Richesson. That name also came from the IGI and was probably sent in by someone who couldn't read the handwriting on their source. But, I would be wary of two wives, both with the first name of Thursa. I don't think I have ever seen that given name before. It must be rare, and that would increase the chances of same person, two surnames. Jim Downing Sarasota, FL

    2. I'm searching for my father's family from Rockford, Winnebago Co., Illinois. His father was James Grant Downing, whom I find on the 1910 census living with his mother and siblings. He was born in 1886 and is the first in his family to be born in Ilinois. He has older sisters, Lllie and Ethel who were born in Canada in 1877 and 1882. Younger siblings are Percy H, Elizabeth E., and Cecil R. who were all born in Illinois. It would appear that the father of the family is dead. Elizabeth, whose maiden name was Hover, has her parents living with her. They are John and Jane Hover, both born in England. Elizabeth Hover Downing was born in England in 1857. I'm not sure of my great grandfather's first name, but I believe it was John. I'm told that he was from London. I know my Downings just got here compared to most of you on this list, but I'm hoping that someone will recognize this family. Thanks. Christine Downing

    2. Linda, That's a good point. A lot depends on an accent, and even on how well soemone can hear, and more depends on how well a person can spell what he hears. I sure do appreciate you all for your knowledge and helpful hints. Sue Hodnett

    2. Jim, The fact that Charles L. Downing should have two wives with the same name did surprise me; for as you say, that is an unusual name anyway. But the article definitely talks as if he has two wives. He probably did marry twice; I just can't see them both with that name. Sue Hodnett

    2. Jim, just remember no one knew or really cared about spelling and setting it down phonetically was quite acceptable. I have seen several times the name Theresa spelled Thursa. I guess it depended upon your accent. This could go for Richardson also. I have a copy of a legal document where the name is spelled three different ways within the body of the document - and then the guy signed it with another spelling! Linda
