With all the talk of Downings in Davis County, Iowa, I thought I'd see if anyone has a Margaret. She was probably born abt 1824 in Pennsylvania. She married James GLEASON in Scotland County, Missouri. Their children were born in Fox River, Davis, Iowa. I do not know anything of her parents. Does Margaret sound familiar to any of you? Wendy Muir
Darrell, I hope we can prove a relationship. I'll be glad to send information on Francis. Right now, I have company from out of state. They came for my son's wedding, and will soon be going home. Then I'll write to you in more detail. Sue Hodnett
Darlene, The example of your son dating all Lindas was cute! Thank you, Sue Hodnett
Linda and Sue, My son was married to two Linda's, and went with three other girls named Linda. We asked if he couldn't find a girl with another name, he replyed, he didn't want to get mixed up and call them by the wrong name. Elaine, Here's the best website I've found for checking various Counties. Go to the U.S. map and click on the state you want, then go to the county list. Most county will have a surname search and/or a list of queries of other people who are looking for someone. I hope it helps!!! The USGenWeb Project - Home Page Darrell
Sue, Can you tell me more about your Francis??? My GGgrandfather jad a brother named Francis! That's not a real common name for back then. My Francis was b.12-20-1803 in Montgomery Co. KY. My GGGF Dennis b. 12-25-1801 in the same County. Their father James b.1765 in Va. Their Grandfather James b. 1740 in NY. I'll bet they're related somehow!!! Darrell
Sue, I have a case where a man married three Mary's (of course not all at once!) :-) But then, Mary is more common. Linda
several ways to find something like this, 1. use your search engines. 2. go to cyndi howells gen web page and go to ky info, the ky counties are listed at the end, and you can access their gen web pages there, joe >Joe please could you let me know the exact address of this Allen webpage? Regards Elaine > > >==== DOWNING Mailing List ==== > > >
Well, that helps with the name Thusa or Thursa. What do you think of the likelihood, tho, that a man would marry twice, to women of that same first name? Sue Hodnett
Esther, My ancestor Francis Downing, married twice. Both sound like white names, Susannah Wells and Henrietta Viley. One of MD and one of KY. So I'm still puzzling out where or why they named one son Powhatan. Their other family names are so common that this one really stands out. Like William, Richard, Samuel, John, Francis, Mary, Susannah and Ruth. And then Powhatan? Sue Hodnett
No, I'm afraid I don't know of a connection. My Downings went to Illinois and stayed there. I do have a tentative James Downing born in NY about 1740 but the source is unreliable and, in any event, does not match yours. Sorry. Joe please could you let me know the exact address of this Allen webpage? Regards Elaine
anyone researching this family should check the Allen Co,KY Gen Web Page, it has several postings on Benjamin Downing and his family, joe

Hi Elaine, This is just a wild shot here. I have a Joseph Crandall DOWNING, supposedly born in Harvey, Nova Scotia. there is no such place, so thought maybe you might have him in your descendants of Benjamin. I have no birthdate on him, but one of his sons was born in 1884, so would guess the 1850s or 1860s. Thank you, Jackie
Has anyone proved or disproved a connection between Logan County VA(WV) and Logan County IL? What were the early surnames of that part of IL? It's sometimes downright eerie how some place names appear and reappear as settlers push on. And one royal headache to us who spend hours searching in the right county but the wrong state. :-P I've encountered this in VA-NC-KY-TN but not, so far, above the Mason-Dixon line. Anyone? Jackie
>From time to time I post data which I think might be generally useful. If you don't want to see such on the mailing list let me know. Here's one on POWs from WWII. Each month, Sierra Home will post a database on the site that you can search for free. This month's database is the World War II Prisoners of War database. It contains information such as the person's name, rank, date and place of capture, the name of the camp where the person was held, and other details of prisoners of war during WWII.
