I have Mehitable Downing md. Zebediah Gates 13 Jun 1737, Preston, New London, CT (source: Preston VRs). Mehitable was born 1712 in Preston and died after 23 Dec 1758. Various searches give father as Daniel Downing (abt 1680-1744) and Hannah Adams. This is not verified. I need more information on parents. Any help will be appreciated. TIA, Lloyd Lloyd A. Darlene, It helps some. One of my ancestors used to boast to his grnadchildren that he was a red headed Irishman, so my elderly relatives all believed our Downings to be from Ireland. but I can't find any conclusive evidence to back that up. All the known records I have seen on our line places its origin in Yorkshire, England. The given name of Morean or Morian would sound Irish to me; but what if the name was supposed to be Marian or Marion? It could well be that; I just can't find any clue that our ancestors are really from Ireland. Of course, there is the fact, that I don't know who Francis Downing's brothers or sisters were; but I can't find a Francis that was born around 1736 from Ireland either. Nor can I find a Morean or Marian, born in Ireland about 1816. Have you seen any such thing? Perplexing, to say the least. Sue Hodnett

James Downing and Mary Downing That's for sure! My brother and sister-in-law are James & Mary Downing. I'm looking for anything on Phineas Downing . . . . (There were more than one--and I'd be happy with information on any of them!) Barbara Downing Beverick

Actually all of the lists I belong to personally are closed. The reason I don't join lists like medieval genealogy [a major interest of mine] is because of the garbage in them, a problem with open lists. Lists like that, by the way, can be searched using a program like Deja Vu [which you may have in your internet software somewhere] periodically to find any good things that may have appeared so you don't have to miss them. Effectively immediately all Rootsweb mailing lists, including Downing and ILLogan are closed. This means that if you aren't subscribed to the list you cannot post to the list. This action was taken due to the large volume of spam floating around and being sent to the lists. READ THIS: In practical terms it means if you want to post you must subscribe [subscriptions are available] BUT it means that you must always post from the address under which you subscribed. If you only have one email address you have no problem. I and many others have more than one so we will have to exercise a bit more care in making sure we post from the subscribed address. If you post from an unsubscribed address your message will bounce. I hope that is clear. I have other nongenealogy mailing lists that work this way so it is clear to me. <g> If it is not clear let me know. It seems a shame to close the list; but I see your point. I don't like messing with spam either. Sue Hodnett
