If you need to find a location and you know very little -- in this case it was the Downing Cemetery in Wayne County, TN -- you go to http://www.peabody.yale.edu/other/gnis/ And you can find just about any location. 2. Here's a database I ran across recently. It has more than 100 Downing lists. http://www.autumnstar.com/GeneaNet I personally did not find any of 'my' Downings on it but then mine came on a UFO since they do have a trail before c. 1750. <g> Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com Logan County, ILGenWeb, coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~illogan/loindex.htm Logan County mailing list> LOGAN-L-request@rootsweb.com Downing mailing list> DOWNING-L-request@rootsweb.com Downing query board> http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Downing Lucas query board> http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Lucas

    2. Cann anyone tell me the best sources of information on the Downings of Lancaster Co, PA, prior to 1800? There were at least two distinct families of Downings there, but I have not been able to sort them out. There were at least two families named William Downing. One family was Quaker and one was Presbyterian. I'm trying to research the Presbyterian group, but -frankly- I'm lost. Bob Bowman RCBowman@Manchester.edu

    2. Okay, you DOWNING experts, I need help on these Downings: who are they? to whom do they belong? John P. Downing married Miss Ellen W. Hudgun, of Caroline County, VA, Aug 18, 1852. The I found a John P. Downing who diedat Red Sulphur Springs on Oct 4, 1856, also of Caroline Co., at 83 yrs of age. Are these the same of two different John P. Downings? Married in 1852 at abt 80 and died in 1856? Makes me think they must be two different men. Also, I found a Samuel W. Downing, of the US Navy, who married Eliza H. Clark, daughter of John Clark a member of Congress from NY, Mar 22, 1838, in Baltimore, VA. And one more: I found a Ruth Downing who married Rees Beanson Mar 17, 1802 in Berkely Co., VA. By 1835 two of my William Downings daughters married Miller Bros. that came from Quakers in Chester Co., Pa. had, along with the Miller family, formed themselves "The Church of God" after they came to Iowa.
