James, Congratulation on your new website!!!! You've done a good job, putting it together. The only problem, It seems to be too big for my monitor. Was it designed for a "big screen"? Hunting will be a little easier now, Thanks to you. Darrell

There are a number of Blackwell-Downing marriages in this family! Thomas Downing 1744-1799 of Lancaster Co and Northumberland Co VA served Rev War as captain 1776 & 1777 Northumberland Co Militia. He was sheriff there for many years. He m1 ___ Dameron; m2 Sarah Anne Rogers; m3 Ann Blackwell. John Downing and wife Elizabeth Churchill were in Louisville, KY 1787 and she died that year age 25, had at least one son. Marlene, Your guess is as good as mine on Hanover Co. Some of the Downingtown Pa. people went to Frederick Co., Va. but don't know about Hanover Co. According to Sandra Farney, William Downing and wife Phobe Becket and family moved from Lancaster Co., Pa. around 1791 and on Nov. 7, 1791, received a certificate of membership for the family at the Hopewell Fiends of Frederick Co., Va. Children were listed as Ruth, Eleanor, Mary, John, Sarah and Phoebe. According to a census taken in 1797, the census taker stated that John was gone from Frederick Co. Another Huff connection: Thomas Downing 1796 MD-1865 Logan Co IL, m1 Elizabeth B. Collison/Kellison in Pike Co OH 1819; m2 same county 1832 Rebecca Huff and she died Hancock Co OH 1840; m3 Logan Co IL Loretta Sherman; One of Rebecca's children was named George Huff Downing 1833-?. Joseph and Jemima Woodward Downing of MD and Madison Co OH had a daughter Letitia born 1 March 1773 probably at Prince George co MD, at Rock Creek who married Caleb Huff. Huff's donation tract in the Ohio Land Co is #2, 100 acres, Tract Book and Entries, US Military District, Congress Lands etc State of OH. I believe he m2 Elizabeth. The Thomas and Elizabeth Huff family lived near the Downings in Monongalia Co VA, according to Harriet Wuertele of Calistoga, CA in 1979. Letitia's siblings were William who m Susannah, Mescheck who married Sarah Downing 1799 in Ross Co OH, Winifred who m George Downing, s/o Timothy, 1805 as his 2nd wife, John who m 1811 Nancy Daugherty, Joseph H./ JR. who m Mary Bell in Madison Co OH 1811, Francis Woodward Downing who m Elizabeth Foster in Ross co OH date not clear to me, Jemima who m HEnderson Crabbe 1809 Ross Co OH, Martha who m John Lawrence 1812, Simon or Simeon who m1 Rachel Highland 1816 OH and m2 Rachel Foster 1825 OH and Timothy who m Elizabeth Hayden who m2 Rathbun.Robert Fetters of Chillicothe, OH & WJ Downing of FL have done a lot of work on this line. Francis Woodward and Elizabeth Howe Foster Downing named one of their children Caleb Huff Downing and one Henderson Crabbe Downing. Elizabeth Howe Foster Downing was the dau of Rev. Lewis Foster, I believe,... see Hist of Madison Co OH, and Hist and Ancestry of Rev. John Foster by Wayne E. Dawson, Gen Dept LDS church 1984. Another Letitia Downing, dau of William and Susannah?,granddau of Joseph and Jemima woodward Downing, married Jesse Moore 1827 Adams Co OH, and she died 1858 and me m2. John M. and Elizabeth M. Gordon Downing, he a son of William, named a dau Letitia "Lettie" and she married Ephraim Frost 1841 and she is buried Steam Furnace Cem Adams Co OH, d 1899.This is Robert Fetters' line. Joseph and Jemima Woodward Downing went from maryland to Monongalia Co VA to Washington Co OH, then MAYBE on to Adams, Ross/Pike with a son or sons. In Madison Co before 1819. Hope this helps some of the Letitia questions. Because I have seen "Hanover Co., PA" mentioned as a residence, I always thought it might have really been Hanover twp, York Co., PA. Has Hanover Co., VA been checked for evidence of Downings being there, do you know? I'm going to our large geni library next week, and I will be glad to see what they have on Hanover Co., VA, if it hasn't already been combed. Marlene Marlene DiGiovanni MarleneDiGi@prodigy.net
Just thought I'd share this bit of Americana with y'all....... My gt gt grandparents were John B. and Mary C. Downing. Mary's maiden name was Downing, they were first cousins. Born and married in Chester co., PA, they moved to Kansas in 1877 with their family. John was a farmer and a schoolteacher, according to census reports. And they must have been astute students of American history, and here's why. Among their children were the following three: Thomas E. Downing Winfield S. Downing George W. Downing Nothing particularly exciting there. At least, that's what I thought, until recent research revealed their middle names. Thomas Ellsworth Downing was named after Ephraim Ellsworth, a Union Colonel in the Civil War, and the first fatality of the war. Ellsworth was shot and killed in 1861 as he tried to tear away a Confederate flag over an Inn in Virginia. He was given a state funeral on order of President Lincoln, and thousands of children born in the 1860's, as was Thomas, were given the name of Ellsworth. Winfield Scott Downing was named after a famed American general, Winfield Scott, who led the army in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War. He, too, was idolized in the 1800's. And if I have to tell you who George Washington Downing was named after, it's probably not worth the effort. Three children named after famous Americans in the same family. Pretty interesting, and a unique insight into our nation in the 1800's. Ray
Marlene, I would rather think that Hanover Co. is in Va. If you look up the map for 1738 it shows Hanover Co. extending to the Pa. border. Later other Va. counties were added between Pa. and Va. Is this what they called the expanding territories of va? I have a Harding line about which not a lot is known. My great grandmother Downing was one. If you have any Hardings I'd like to hear about it [email me privately -- this is the Downing list]. I have also started a Harding mailing list so if you have any Hardings among your Downings [or other lines] feel free to join.
