Sherry My cousin told me that a mutual distant cousin said our Downings are originally from Downington PA. All I know is that William P. Downing, my gggrandfather, was born in PA, moved to Ohio, married Isabella Criswell Roberson in 1842 in Trumbull County OH, and died about 1879, if memory serves. Their son, William M. Downing, and Minnie Bell McCreery, were my maternal grandmother's parents. I think, but don't know for sure, that the mutual distant cousin was descended from H. S. Downing. Nancy Pridgen
Lionville, PA is mentioned in my notes on the family of Joseph Downing and his wife Mary Trimble who had a farm in the valley E of Downington in Chester Co PA. This town is mentioned as the residence of their daughter Jane who married John Gordon ca 1785. Your Downings would not be in her generation, of course, but there were a lot of Downings in Chester County...perhaps yours. My notes are too early to be of help. sounds like the mother and younger brother should be in the 1860 census, then maybe find all of them in 1850 census. joe > Trying to pin down the parents of one Joseph B. If you look on a present day map to find Lionville in Chester County, Pennsylvania: - find Rt. 100 (goes N/S down the county) - at the intersection of Rt. 100 and 113 is Lionville this is south of Rt. 100 and 23 and north of Rt. 100 and 30 west of 100 / 113 on 113 is Downingtown (note: it is town not ton) There is an existing resturant, the Lionville Inn which was an inn/tavern in the 1700's. Digital Microfilm is a relatively new concept to genealogy. One that has provided great interest to Heritage Quest, with its collection of 250,000 titles of genealogy-rich microfilm. Now the company is announcing the beginning of a new era--one of convenience, speed and highly-improved document viewing. Heritage Quest has now imaged the complete 1790, 1900, and 1920 federal census schedules with remaining census years projected to completion by September 1999. This new product line--Family Quest Archives(tm) Digital Microfilm-will be produced on CD-ROM on a roll-by-roll basis (one CD-ROM equivalent to one roll of microfilm) with all the familiar NARA microfilm numbers you've been accustomed to using. Heritage Quest has taken National Archives silver master census films and digitized each and every image. The process has taken time, highly-skilled human resources and the best digital imaging equipment on the market today. But, looking at the features and benefits, the wait and enormous startup expenditures have been worth it. No word on price. My guess would be $20-30 per roll but I've been wrong before. They currently have a long list of microfilm and CDs available. http://www.heritagequest.com Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com Coordinator, Logan County, ILGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~illogan/loindex.htm Logan County mailing list> LOGAN-L-request@rootsweb.com Downing mailing list> DOWNING-L-request@rootsweb.com Harding mailing list> HARDING-L-request@rootsweb.com Downing query board> http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Downing Lucas query board> http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Lucas

Erica, there is a Middleton-Downing family history originally published at Anderson, IN by Hazel May Middleton Kendall in 1932. All I have is a copy of a library file card without a library name. The 1850 census for Pickaway County, OH includes these Downings from Delaware: David Downing 29 laboring Delaware lived Monroe Tp house #1401-1412 Priscilla 27 OH David J. 7 OH Solomon 4 OH. Thomas Downing 41 mason Delaware lived in Deer Creek TP house #60-60 Margaret A. 36 she and children all born Delaware Marey E. 13 John E. 13 Sarah T. 11 Martha 6 Wane G. 2 William T. 10/12. According to a 1976 query in The Genealogical Helper by Cliff P. Downing in Gresham, OR, Thomas Downing was born ca 1815 in Delaware and went to Circleville, OH before 1854. His wife was Margaret A. Dawson. The 1860 US census of Vermillion Co IL shows H.T. Downing b ca 1834 Delaware with wife Martha b ca 1840 also Delaware. A query in the Downing Family Historical Society of America in 1992 inquired about Downings in Sussex Co DE: John Downing fined for not going to muster in 1779; Elizabeth who married John Middleton and had 13 children. Direct response to Ross Downing, 2400 Pleasant Grove, Lansing, MI 48910. Source, probably Gregath, also 1969 Mrs. William M. Rose of Northridge, CA: Ezekiel Downing left will in Kent County DE 1765, children included Joseph E., Benjamin, William and Sarah and maybe Elizabeth. That is all the information in my miscellaneous Downing files for Delaware and they are not my line. The 1997 address for Downing Family Historical Society of America was 176 State Route 49, Cleveland, NY 13042. Sherry in ORegon Genealogy Central wrote: > Hello eveyone. > I am new to this list. The Downing Family Historical Society of America newsletter, undated, had a piece about Daniel Downing supplied by member Jane Digerness. Daniel Downing died 24 January 1827-28. See book, Revolutionary War Veterans Buried in Columbia County, NY vol 1 page 90. Daniel's wife was Margaret but American Ancestry, vol 2 page 34 gives her name Betsy Riell. Daniel came from Long Island, served as a captain in the Rev. War and later resided Hillsdale, NY. He had two sons: Silas and Elias. Silas b 1784 d 1840 m Margaret allen. Elias b 1782 d1851 m Anna Parks. Elias and Anna lived Austerlitz NY and had a son Joseph P. Downing b 1823 m 1842 Elizabeth A. Meade. Joseph and Elizabeth had ten sons: Joseph M, Austin C, Samuel D, Daniel B, Elbert D, Albert N, Elmer E, George W, Thaddeus M and Smith E Downing. The information was supplied from research by Leonard Wanzor, jr. of Glen Head NY. I cannot supply any more source for this but perhaps the clues will suffice. A 1992 issue of the same publication noted that Mrs. Lillian Shute of MN was working on the Elias Downing line, Elias m1 Polly Chase, m2 Anna Parks. Son Joseph Parks Downing m Elizabeth Aver Mead, all of West Chester County and Columbia County, NY. A 1991 issue noted that Silas Downing, 1784-1840, son of Daniel and Margaret, married Margaret Allen and had 8 children, one of whom was Allen Benjamin. Another source for this is Ann Gregath's book. And that is all I can add to this particular discussion. I have kept for years clippings and queries and information about Downings, and these are arranged in binders by state and county. New subscriber to the DOWNING surname mailing list. Looking for descendents of Thomas DOWNING, born October 18, 1770 in County Tyrone, Ireland. Emigrated to the U.S. in 1792 through Philadelphia and first settled in Petersburg, Virginia. Thomas moved on to the Abbeville District of South Carolina and then to the Mississippi Territory about 1808. He is listed on the 1816 Adams County tax rolls. He is listed as "Thomas Donning" in the 1820 U.S. Census for Marion County. By 1829 the he had settled in Hinds County and is listed in the 1830 and 1840 U.S. Census for Hinds County. Thomas died August 2, 1845 and was burried in the Raymond City Cemetery.
Here's another free database, free just for this week: Bibliography: "Genealogical Library Master Catalog." Orem, UT: Ancestry, Inc., 1999. To search this database, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/ancestry/search/3622.htm Be prepared for a long list of works using your surname or with an author of that surname. Some works are listed over and over because there is a listing for each LIBRARY which has a copy. Still, it is an interesting list. Here's the address for a War of 1812 database that is free in January: http://www.sierra.com/sierrahome/familytree/records/ As an example, there are 158 Downings, 186 Hardings, 229 Lucases. It will only display the first 100 hits so unless you have an unusual name [or the first name is early in the alphabet] you are probably going to need a first name. All of the vets I am aware of were there -- which is pretty remarkable in my experience. Generally I'm lucky to find one or two.
