Most of the research you found I also found by going to PEI and digging up some family histoy there, also in the list you made, you missed one person, his name was Daniel Downing , he came from Cork Ireland aroundthe 1915-1920's I don't know the exact date but my grandfather used to speak of him and even had a picture of him, however I have looked everywhere to try and find information, I was told I would have to get into the achives from Ireland to find anything about him, if you could help me that would be fantastic! Yet again , thank you for your time looking into this matter, I know when I visit my family in NB Shediac they like to listen to the stories of the family past! You mentioned that you live in the old Hollister Homestead in Cody, Wyoming. I'm wondering if you have any information on Dwight Hollister's first wife, Elizabeth Augusta Hearne Hollister. Dwight and Elizabeth were married 26-Feb-1902 in New York. Their son Dwight was born in 1909 or 1910 in Missouri, but by the time of the 1910 US census, the Hollisters were living in Marquette, Park Co. They were still living in Park Co. durng the 1920 US census. The last information I have on Elizabeth is that both she and Dwight are listed as owing state land taxes for 1926 in the 01-Jun-1927 issue of the Cody Enterprise. By the 1930 census, Elizabeth has vanished. Dwight was living with Orilla Downing as a lodger and gave his marital status as single. Elizabeth was one of the four daughters of Edwin Ross Hearne. Her younger sister Annie Theresa was my great-grandmother. Any information would be welcome. Thank you! Sarah Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Three of Susannah's sons names are Newton, Matthew and Jeremiah Hemphill. I do not know the others name because they were older than my grandmother, but they had a different last name and my grandmother rarely spoke of them and never by name. This line originated in Bradninch, Devon, England, with documentation back to 1530 (much thanks to St. Disen's Church in Bradninch!). I just wish to note that this Downing line has no connection whatsoever to Sir George Downing. Thomas Downing, Downingtown's namesake, left England in 1717. A Quaker, he established a mill on the Brandywine River. The area became known as "Milltown", and then "Downing's Town". In the mid 1800's it became the Borough of Downingtown. For what it's worth. Your question 'Where are all these various posters?'. This may be the answer. The 1st message on this board for Downing is dated 15 August 1998, I also checked Genealogy.com and their 1st messages also started around 1998. I think you will find that a percentage of those earlier posters have already 'completed' their Downing tree to their satisfaction. For the posters who have Sir George Downing on their trees I hope they have researched him well. For whose finding they are related to him need to know the following - In the past much incorrect information on the Downings, especially Sir George Downing's line, was written and copied. The first was by a man named Anthony Wood/a Wood who back in the mid to late 1600's - wrote that Sir George Downing was the son of Dr. Calybute Downing [bapt. 27 Oct. 1605], when of course he was the son of Emanuel [bapt. 12 Aug. 1585]son of George Downing the headmaster of the school in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. The second mistake was made by John Burke and John Bernard Burke in the 1800's who copied the Woods mistake into their many genealogical and heraldic books. Now days hopefully everyone is on the correct track there. But Downing researchers have problems - 1] In the St. Lawrence Church, Ipswich, Suffolk, England burial records, the name of the wife [buried 21 Dec 1610] of George Downing the headmaster of the school in Ipswich has been left blank and she is not named in his will, yet many 'trees' name her as Dorcas Blois/Bloyce. There was a Dorcas B. who married a George D. but she died in 1638 and he in 1655. 2] The Publications of the Harleian Society in 1891 for The Norfolk Visitations years 1563, 1589, and 1613 for the Downing name were combined into one collection forming the Harl. MS. 1552 - they are confusing and incorrect. In the 1613 Norfolk Visitations the Downings are not entered. My Downings moved from England to Ireland and then back to England. My 6 x great-grandfather was named at the Seige of Londonderry and the Battle of the Boyne and died in 1719 in Bellaghy Co. Londonderry, by the late 1800's they are back in England. You could put a new thread on the board asking Downing researchers where they live and which branch of Downings they are researching. It would be very useful for others to see whose researching who. It you do go down this route it may be worth also putting a message on Genealogy.com. Good luck, Jill Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. As I see it, one of the many problems here is the proliferation of Georges. As an old quiz show said, will the real George Downing please stand up and be identified. Another issue, at least for me, is where are all these various posters. Maybe we can all identify where we are researching, like my line is George Downing that married Mary Coles in Massachusetts, US. I know that others are in Pennsylvania, the UK, Ireland, Australia and god knows where else. This is all somewhat confusing for a novice like me. Cheers! The message dated 2004-01-13 states that Mary and Geoffrey had the following children - Amey, Benjamin and George born in 1668, the messge also states that Mary died in 1668. Not only is genealogy fascinating it's also frustrating when errors are found in information that can easily be researched before the information is placed on message boards. I agree completely. This, however, begs the question, who are the ancestors of the George Downing who married Mary Coles? I'm also dealing with a similar problem in my own mother's line of Denmans. Denmans married into the Stuarts, Anne, wife of James II. Of course, everyone with a name even close to Denman wants part of that action. As a novice, I'm finding that genealogy is like putting together a 10 million piece jigsaw puzzle. We get pieces here and there and try to fit them into the big picture. If I get some unrelated information, I set it aside until I see where it fits. Oh well, it will all get done eventually. We just keep plugging away at it and monitor message boards like this one because you never know when something interesting will pop up. But I will say this, genealogy is a fascinating field. Cheers! This morning I posted a message under the heading -'Children of Sir George Downing - George son of Mary Browne & husband of Mary Cole is not one of them'. Reading the The Diary of Samuel Pepys for the year 1667, the House of Commons Journal Vol. 8 1660-1667 and the 'Calender of Treasury Books' Vol. 2 1667-1668. I able to track Sir George Downing's movements for the whole of 1667 apart from April, July and October, even in April, July and October a journey could not have been taken as the sailing time back then from England to America one way was around 60/65 days. In 1668 no months are blank. He had a high powered job and was very easy to find. Good luck, Jill Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The information below will show that Sir George Downing did not leave England for any length of time in 1667 and 1668. In those days a journey one way to America took around 60/65. The information for the year 1667 has been taken from - a] The Diary of Samuel Pepys for 1667. b] House of Commons Journal Vol. 8 1660-1667. 1667. Publication 'Calendar of Treasury Books' Vol.2 1667- 1668. Below Sir George Downing is named in the monthly Minute Books on following dates. 1668. JAN. 16th, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 28th & 31st. The Minute Books are online and can be checked. The dates above for the year 1668 are Sir George Downing attending meetings, dealing with Treasury money, meeting individuals and writing papers, amongst other duties for The Treasury. The dates for the years 1667 and 1668 above prove Sir George Downing was not the father of George born in 1668 in Providence, Rhode Island to Mary Browne. Why did Mary Browne give her son the surname Downing? Another Downing must have been living in the same area as Mary Browne in the mid. 1667 to early/mid. 1668. I did see a message dated 2004-01-13 stating that Mary Browne married Geoffrey (George) Downing in 1657 so may be this is the correct Downing. But then I read a message on Ancestry posted this summer stating a relationship link between Sir George Downing and Robert Coles the grandfather of Mary Coles who married the George Downing son of Mary Browne of Rhode Island. Aplogies to those whose trees show Sir George Downing father of George born 1668 - Rhode Island. If you have not already done so I hope you can find the correct father for George of Rhode Island.
