MIlly, you don't even have to feel responsible for the person's death to have survivor's guilt. Your mind will play over & over what you could have done that would have changed things. My friends stopped by my house on the way to the river. I was told later they stopped to ask me to go, but for some reason they never asked me. My feelings were hurt, because we went everywhere together. My mom did ask me if I wanted to go with them which was very much out of character for her. I thought a minute & said no. I tried to commit suicide 3 times & eventually was put in a mental hospital where I received counseling that made me lose the wish to kill myself and want to live, but the pain and guilt took many more years to become tolerable.
