Hi Shirley, A flash drive is just a minature external hard drive. It plugs into your USB drive and you can access the files on it from there. You can use it to back up files, move files from one computer to another, or anything similar. You plug it into your USB drive and it pops up like an additional drive when you look in "My Computer". You can make different folders on the flash drive just like you do on the hard drive on your PC. To back up or copy files, select them on your hard drive, then choose "copy to" and choose the flash drive as the destination (or the folder that you've made on the flash drive). The one thing you need to make sure of is that you properly eject the drive before removing it from the USB port or you take the chance on corrupting the entire drive and losing everything (spoken by one that's had the personal experience of doing that!) Hope that makes sense. From: <makekaus@aol.com> Girls, do any of you use a "flash drive" to back up your genealogy?? If you do could you tell me how it works etc.. Shirley, I usually back up my genealogy on a CD or my zip drive. I had a zip drive on my old computer, so when I bought the new computer, I went ahead & bought an external zip drive. I had spent so much money on all my zip disks, I hated to lose all that storage space. I do have an external hard drive. Arvil got me a 500 GB one for Christmas. All I do is plug it into a USB port & it will show up beside my C drive under "My Computer". Now, I store everything on it, so it doesn't slow my PC down. I guess it works just like the smaller flash drives. Bobbie
