A mother, God love her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then reused it. She was the original recycle queen, before they had a Name for it... A father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones. Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see them now, Dad in trousers, tee shirt and a hat and Mom in a house dress, lawn mower in one hand, and dish-towel in the other. It was the time for fixing things; a curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things we keep. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that repairing, eating, reusing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you knew there'd always be more. But then my mother died, and on that clear summer's night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any more. Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away...never to return. So.. While we have it... it's best we love it... And care for it.... And fix it when it's broken..... And heal it when it's sick. This is true. For marriage.... And old cars.... And children with bad report cards... And dogs and cats with bad hips.... And aging parents.... And grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it. Some things we keep. Like a best friend that moved away or a classmate we grew up with. There are just some things that make life important, like people we know who are special.... And so, we keep them close! I received this from someone who thinks I am a 'keeper,' so I've sent it to the people I think of in the same way... No w it's your turn to send this to those people who are 'keepers' in your life. Send it back to the person who sent it to you if they, too, are a keeper. Good friends are like stars.. You don't always see them, but you know they are always there. Keep them close. Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless!

"If God is for you", Who can be against you" TO BAD, SO SAD..... -------------------------------------------------------------------- Do you remember when Puerto Rico was raising heck about the U. S. Navy using that nothing little island just off the coast of Puerto Rico for bombing practices, which they had used for the past 75 years? Demonstrations were held; Hollywood left wingers, Al Sharpton and his fellow demagogues went down there to demonstrate to get the Navy out. I am sure it infuriated you just as it did me at the time. Well, here is our revenge. Always be careful what you ask for, you just may get it! One of the many headaches that the U. S. has had was the Puerto Rican island of Vieques . In the waning years of the Clinton Administration, protesters demanded that the U. S. Navy abandon bombing and naval gunfire exercises that had taken place on the largely uninhabited island for nearly 70 years. In 2002, the bombing exercises were t ransferred to an Air Force bombing range in central Florida not far from Jacksonville and Pensacola Naval Air Stations. In January, many of the protesters were back in Puerto Rico, celebrating the final bombing exercise on Vieques and waved Puerto Rican flags and placards that read 'U. S. Navy, get out of Puerto Rico.' The following February, Rumsfeld announced that the U. S. Navy would close the Roosevelt Roads Naval Air Station in Puerto Rico in 2004, eliminating 1,200 civilian jobs as well as 700 military positions. This naval facility is estimated to have put nearly $300 million annually into the local economy. The next day, a stunned Governor Sila Calderon held a20news conference in San Juan protesting the base closure as a serious blow to the Commonwealth's fragile economy. The governor stated that 'the people of Puerto Rico don't now or never did have an interest in closing the Vieques bombing range or the Roosevelt Roads naval base. We are interested in both staying in Puerto Rico .' When asked, the Commander-in-Chief, Western Atlantic Command, said, 'Without Vieques, I see no further need for the facility at Roosevelt Roads. None.' So, Yankee go home? Fine. But we'll take our dollars with us. Hasta la vista, baby! On February 21, the Secretary of Defense also announced=2 0that starting this year, the U.S. European Command would begin moving most, if not all, of its active combat and support units from bases in Germany to others being established in Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Turkey to 'better position them for rapid deployment to likely hot spots in those parts of the world.' Immediately the business and government leaders in the German states of Hesse, Rhineland and Wurttemburg protested the loss of nearly $6 billion in US revenue each year from the bases and manpower to be displaced. A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry speculated that the move may be 'what the Americans call 'payback' for the actions of this government in opposing military action in Iraq .' 'Does anyone know the German translation for: 'Hasta la vista, baby?' I think 'Aufwiedersehen' is a good translation. Oh, isn't it nice to see a government with guts and a good memory??? Also, here are some statistics and conclusions about a different subject. If you consider that there has been an average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theater of operations during the last 22 months, and a total of 2,112 deaths, when this was written) that gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers. The firearm death rate in Washington D. C. is 80.6 per 100,000 for the same period. (...and that was while handguns were outlawed!!) That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in the U. S. Capitol, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, than you are in Iraq. PASS THIS ON 'cuz you can be sure that CNN, NBC, ABC and CBS won't! Conclusion: Just maybe the U.S. Should pull out of Washington ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Windows Live™: Keep your life in sync. Well I have to agree... once again it will be another way to sabotage our economy... with it being that much more expensive we won't be buying any amo for the guys to skeet shoot with this summber. We go through like 5 boxes in a weekend. Next thing you know they will be doing the same for arrows and traps. That will be the less boxes sold, which will mean productions will be cut... which means people will be out of jobs or at least cut hours... which will mean less transporting which cuts jobs on that end too... then because less is being sold at the stores hours will be cut there too. It's a domino effect. We have friends who get all their meat for the year by hunting. Did we not learn anything about making things illegal or hard to get with prohibition! If we out law guns only the outlaws will have guns. Just my humble opionion... :) right there with you... we've had some flurries on and off all day long... F-I-L got the plow truck stuck in the ditch. Had one of the rear tires about 10 iches off the ground. Seems to be okay though managed to still plow after 'we' got him pulled out. Brother is fixing his 4x4 today... has an internal issue but he has to drive back to OH for college tomorrow... on the way home thur he ended up in a ditch w/ a $90. tow/pull bill. :( Even though it's warmed up quite a bit it's still way cold and feels colder then it did when we had our sub degree weather. I imagine that's all due to the moisture. DH just started a fire and man has it helped. Even in just the few minutes it's been going. Think we are going to hunker down at home... I agree Jenny. Cops lay their lives on the line every time they are called out. They never know if they will be shot when answering a call. I'd be locked up the first time I went out on a call. In my opinion the police should use more tazers & force when it comes to people who run from them or come at them when they have been told to halt. If that policeman had of hit him with a night stick they would of screamed brutality, if he had not stopped him with a tazer he might of been the one dead. It's a "NO WIN" situation for the police. I think they should have more liberties than they have. I don't believe in brutality but I don't believe in the police having to take abuse or have their lives threatened without some self defense.
