Family tradition says Scotch Irish; perhaps were once McDowells, also family tale from old timers of kinship with Benjamin Franklin; haven't proven any of that. > Have proven: > George Dowell born 1759, Albermarle Co Va - served in Rev. War from Va - with Washington at ValleyForge; and at battle of Brandwine; furloughed in Dec 1778 and then moved with family in 1778 to Burke Co N.C. From that state George and brother John Dowell both served in N.C. Militia. George also was in Wilkes Co NC. after the war. Wife was Jane N.N. Moved abt 1838 to Monroe Co Indiana and is buried there in Elletsville in Moore family cemetery. George's family intermarried with the Moores, Coffeys, and Allens. > George was brother to John Dowell, born 1861 in Albermarle Co VA. John moved with family to Burke Co N.C. Married in 1797 to Sarah Hickman. Lived in Cumberland Co KY and by 1805 to Jackson Co Tn where he died in 1851. May have been married before Sarah Hickman to NFN Franklin and had a son George. Proof positive that George and John were brothers. John's family intermarried with the Terry family, Whitson family, Kurkendall family. Does anyone know who John and George parents were. I have been looking for them for a long time. Found a paper in the Thomas Coffey history that says the parents are buried in North Carolina near the old Dowell homeplace near Mulberry Creek. No idea where this can be but it was somewhere in Wilkes Co N.C. Thanks for any help. I started looking in 1974 and am looking still!!! > >
