I am looking for clues to the ancestry of Mary McDaniel who married Revolutionary War soldier Richard Dowell. Other than the marriage record below, the main information I have on her comes from the pension application that she filed after Richard's death. I think that Mary was born about 1764 and died after 1852. Richard died in 1823 in Wilkes County, NC. North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868 Bride: Mary McDaniel Groom: Richard Dowell Bond Date: 10 Dec 1787 County: Rowan Record #: 01 101 Bondsman: John Dowell Witness: J McEwen Bond #: 000124257 Dave Dowell in Morro Bay, CA Researching: Adams, Armfield, Barnard, Bottum, Breske, Brown, Burritt, Carlton, Cashatt, Christie, Clough, Currier, Dow, Dowell, Dungan, Foot(e), Grove, Hoar, Kernodle, Lakey, Lawrence, Mclaren, Martin, Maynard, Messenger, Moon, Moore, Paepke, Pattee, Perry, Pierce, Pyle, Ratliff, Shover, Smithey, Tydings, Weaver & Wing. http://library.cuesta.org/ddowell.htm http://www.DDowell.com
Ron: We may be looking for the same woman. My G-grandmother was Mary Young, born in 1858 (obituary says Missouri, but 1890 census states Indiana. She married John Huelet Austin in 1874 in Fayette County, Ill. Mary's Mother was Sarah Dowell and was married to John Young. She named a daughter Clara. Her obituary states that she arrived with her father and younger siblings after her mother passed away (no cause of death is given) around 1870. Mary is said to have been one quarter Cherokee. Deloris, I appreciate your answer...I have George Dowell as..being born about 1759...in Va...around..Orange, or Albemarle County, Va.. But think the area...nearer..(today) near Ruckersville, Va/ We lost him...after Revolutinary War...when he was found with brother John Dowell..(born about 1764..and died in Tn...) possibly...buried..in Gainesboro, Tn..after Feb 3, 1851... Known to be alive at that time...) George Dowell served..with John Dowell...with Gen Thomas Sumter..and Captain Sumter...,brother of..and we lost George after the service in South Carolina...and he was known to have gone to Indianna..but...all we knew...Have background backwards...on Dowell's from 1699..(apprx,) contact me...bernieandrose@juno.com.. Thanks..Bernie..
The George Dowell is buried in Monroe County, Indiana. George daughter Mary married to a John Moore in Monroe County, Indiana. The Moore's married to a Harris, then the Harris married to Walden and then to Shultz.
Does anyone have any information concerning Lillie Smith born in 1894 in Breckinridge Co. Ky? She married Gilbert H. Dowell in 1915 and they had a son, Henry M. Dowell in 1916 in Guston, Ky.
I am trying to find proof that my great grandmother, Letitia Dowell, was the child of Nehemiah Dowell and Jane/Jincey Dowell of Breckinridge County, Kentucky. Nehemiah was born 1793 in Bedford, Virginia and emigrated with his family to Kentucky in the year 1800. Jane/Jincy Dowell, his cousin whom he eventually married, was born about 1799, also in Bedford, Virginia. Nehemiah and Jane/Jincey had 9 children of record. My Letitia would make 10, and she fits between her brothers Littleberry and Francis. The children of Nehemiah and Jane/Jincy Dowell and their spouses are roughly as follows: (Benjamin) Harrison, b. 1816 d. 1905 m. Nancy J. Jones. Elizabeth (knows as Eliza) b. 1817 d. 1890 m. John H.G. Brown Cinthia (or Cynthia) Ann b. 1819 d. 1880 m. a Smith Mary Ann b. 1821 d. unk. m. Thomas Edmund Yates Lucinda b. 1822 d. aft 1880 m. (unknown) Felix b. 1824 d. 1911 m. (never married) Littleberry b. abt 1827 d. abt 1901 m. Mary Elizabeth Lay Francis b. 1832/33 d. 1907 m. Matilda E. Armstrong James Taylor b. 1837 d. 1891 m. Cynthia Ann Robbins Benjamin Harrison Dowell had a family bible. According to Letitia's son, Horace S. Pease who saw the bible and took records from it in 1909, my Letitia's birth is recorded in that bible. The last person known to have Harrison's bible is Harrison's wife, Nancy Jones Dowell. If there is anyone out there who is descended from Benjamin Harrison Dowell and Nancy Jones Dowell and has the bible in their possession or knows of it's whereabouts, please contact me. Thanks for your time. Alice McVearry
Researching M.E.Minister, Jacob Dowell, born ca 1775, Calvert Co., MD; married Elizabeth Harrold; settled Wayne & Holmes Co., OH 1820s-1830s; died Dalton, OH 1838. It has been suggested he might be grandson of Luke Dowell, son of Phillip Dowell & Mary Tydings. Anyone with any information?
