My g grandmother was MARY ELLEN DECKARD,b.20 Jan 1878, Monroe County, IN. her father was KING ANTHONY "Mon" DECKARD. Recently, I was examining her [my grandmother] marriage license and she had listed a SARAH DOWELL as her mother. My grandmother married LAWRENCE MORTON MCCAMMON 18 Aug 1898, in Monroe County, IN. Trying to verify and learn something about the DOWELL ancestry. THANKS.........Mobie McCammon
I have as the children of John Dowell and Charity Brooks: 1. Benjamin b. 1761 AA Co. MD. m. 1. Barbara SPRINGER 15 April 1788 Fred. Co., MD 2. Mary DEATS (recorded as TEETS in some records) 2. Thomas DOWELL (NFI) 3. John DOWELL b. ? m. Elizabeth JARVIS 4. Jesse DOWELL b. 24 June 1784 (served War of 1812) 5. Elizabeth DOWELL b. 10 Apr 1785 Fred Co., MD I descend from Benajmin through his son Solomon and his 2nd wife, Elizabeth MILLER.
If anyone has info on John Dowell/Charity Brooks children (particularly John and George) I would like to have the information. I have John Dowell ( b.1764) and George Dowell (b1759-60) in Albermarle Co Va. John Dowell/Charity Brooks apparently born & died in Calvert Co Maryland. My John/George do not belong to the other Dowells of Albermarle. Just checking to see if possible they could somehow be sons of the Maryland Dowells. I have been looking for their parents for so many years now and am getting very discouraged. Any help or pointers be much appreciated.

I will be happy to compensate you for the cost involved. Thank you most sincerely. Do you know who his parents were and if he had siblings? If you are willing to share the information you have on the DOWELL line I would be most appreciative. All of my time is taken up with the BASHAM line. My records indicate that your Richard (who married Mary McDaniels) served in the Revolutionary War. I'm a member of DAR since Peter signed the "Oath of Fidelity And Support, 1778". Richard (who married Mary McDaniels) actually fought in the Revolution according to my records. Also, I have that Richard was married a few times. Would you be so kind as to list his spouses if you have them, to help me clarify the records? Concerning the Owens; my records indicate that Elizabeth Owens parents were John Owens & Elizabeth, and another of John's daughters named Pricilla married Phillip Dowell (who was Peter's son!), and that Elizabeth married Peter's son Peter in her second marriage (the first being to Collier). Does your ! records coincide with this?

I think I had just assumed that Charity was documented because I had never seen her given name questioned. I searched my records and could find no such documentation. Then I contacted Fredric Z. Saunders. Here is Rick's reply: "The only place I know that the name of Richard TYDINGS wife is given is in the West River Quaker Monthly Meeting for the marriage of his son who as John TIDINGS 'son of Richard and Charity' married on 16 day, 6 mo. 1705 to Mary ELLIS." Thanks to your question I learned something.

Good morning to "DrDowell" and the list. In 1994 another TYDINGS descendant told me that Charity's maiden name was SPARROW, but the evidence, as you say, seems to be against this. A longtime SPARROW researcher in Baltimore has told me that my Charity was NOT a SPARROW. It's interesting that you have seen ADAMS and TALBOT "reported" as Charity's surname. Robert Barnes, a well-known Maryland researcher, has said that Charity's maiden name _may_ have been STONE, BAGBIE or ADAMS. Gibbs' "Supplement to early settlers of Maryland" says that Charity TYDINGS was "transported by 1682" by Richard TYDINGS of AA County. This suggests, to me, that Charity and Richard were married in England and we should be looking there for the marriage record. Just looked at www.familysearch.org and found no IGI or Ancestral File record for such a marriage. Three entries in the Pedigree Resource File, and one lists her as Charity RAMSEY. (All PRF submissions, like all Ancestral File submissions, are from individuals. No source given. I will write to the submitter to ask about this.) A search for "Richard TYDINGS" brings up a link to an interesting website by Fredric Z. SAUNDERS. He appears to have done substantial research in the original sources -- not "harvesting" from the Internet, which many of us have learned, to our sorrow, does not yield reliable results! Gibbs' "Supplement to early settlers of Maryland" database is online at the impressive Maryland State Archives site, http://mdsa.net. Cheers, Dolly Ziegler in Maryland
