1. Re: [Dowell] Drinkard Dowell

    3. Hi. Who are the parents of this Drinkard Dowell? I have a Drinkard Dowell in my database - his parents are Micajah Dowell and Frances Meador. This Drinkard Dowell was born December 18, 1806. I have no information on him after that. My line (which I haven't proven yet) goes through Drinkard's sister, Sarah Dowell, born Oct 4, 1791. She married Thomas Clemmons in Breckinridge Co, KY on Feb 18, 1809. I just looked through my census indexes, and saw the Drinkard Dowell that you're wondering about in the 1840 census. According to this, Drinkard would have been between the ages, 30 and 40 and 6 kids. Does this fit with the info you have on your Drinkard? In the 1850 census, in Breck Co, KY, there is a Drinker Dowell and according to the index that I got from rootsweb.com, his wife if Paulina and there are children, Polly, 21, McCage, 19, Baxter, 17, Lorenzo, 14, Sarah F, 8, Christopher C., 6, and William G, 3. Is this your Drinkard? I don't have the "D's" in the tax records, so I can't help with that. Look forward to hearing from you. Let me know if I can help any. Mary Supple in Iowa. ----- Original Message ----- From: <kroeger@pioneer.net> To: <DOWELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 21, 2002 6:56 PM Subject: [Dowell] Drinkard Dowell > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Dowell, Snyder > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AST.2ACEB/455 > > Message Board Post: > > My wife is a descendant of Drinkard Dowell and Pauline Snyder. Many years ago ,while researching Dowells in KY, I discovered a second Drinkard Dowell. This was in Breckinridge county KY in the 1830's. The 1840 KY census shows the 2 Drinkards and the tax rolls show 2 for most of the 1830's. I never determined the identity of this 2nd Drinkard but feel he must be a cousin to the other. I think it may be causing some confusion in research. Does anyone know where this Drinkard came from and where he went after 1840? > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >

    3. Rootsweb volunteer,BobDowell, provided me following information: John E. Dowell b 1859 d 18 March 1936 at Adrian, Bates Co. MO. Married Mary Mollie Trapp. Had son John Emery Dowell Jr. b Dec 1891, Bates Co. MO d 1948 Bates CO. Had married Lu Crece B. b 1889 d 1932 Bates Co. MO Probably named their two children, born after 1920, after themselves: Although Bob Dowell said he had more data on Dowell lineage before 1920, he did not forward it. I am grateful for what he sent, however, and the additional info may not have been in my direct line so was irrelevant to my record gathering. But, some others of you may be able to add something or correct my scenerio which follows. Another volunteer for the AZMARICO list said he had more data on subject to share, but it never came through.. I am interested in the two Dowell children born after 1920 and any of their children. If alive, I'd like to contact them. Also their grandmother may have passed down to them some records about our shared great great grandparents William & Jennette Matthes. I have fitted the new information with what I already had and have come up with this SCENARIO: Squire Geo. Bevington from Winterset IA b Jan 1857 married my great aunt Amelia Matthes b about 1854 in NY (she was dau. of William Ernest Matthes and Jennette Satler who immigrated from Prussia/Saxony (exact village or city unknown) about 1854 . Squire and Amelia had dau. Lucrece Bevington b. April 1888 in Winterset IA. It appears she married Frank F. Clay and lived in Butler, Bates Co., MO (per information in William Matthes's death certif and his will) It appears something happed to Frank and she married again to John Emery DOWELL Jr in Bates Co. MO. Prior to her 1932 death Lucrece and John Jr. had two children: (born after 1920): (1) Lucrece Beverly Dowell who in 1951 was operating a med. lab "Dowell Laboratories" at 26 E. 8th, Tempe, AZ (2) Emery (Sonny) Dowell who grad. from AZ State 1952, majoring in Journalsim. He had married on 22 or 27 Dec. 1950 a Catholic girl from Phoenix named Ruth Timberlake and expecting a baby June 1952. If I had the names and addresses of Catholic Churches in Tempe and Phoenix, I could write each of them and find out if their baby was baptized there and if a boy could trace him. It appears that John Emery Dowell, Jr. (Lucrece Beverly and Emery's (Sonny) father) being a widower after 1932 married again to Alyeene (surname unknoiwn) and they operated a weekly journal in Adrian, Bates Co., MO. After John's death Alyeene and her step-son Emery (Sonny) managed the journal and were attempting to sell it. Alyeene "Mrs. John Dowell" was elected president of the Missouri Women's Press Club in 1947. As a widow Alyeene married on Nov. 1951 Mack Sauer, a publ;ished humorist, and they lived at Leesberg OH. I have photos to share with family if located. Two are as follows: (1) nurse holding infant Rose Ann Newman born abt. Oct. 24 1948 in Hawaii. (2) woman holding baby, photo inscribed "Baby Rose Ann with Mamma Lou" This could be Lucrece Beverly Dowell and her baby. but I have no data about Lucrece marrying a Mr. Newman. Who is Baby Rose Ann? How does she fit into this family? Another photo shows "Sonny" in a Navy officer's uniform. He resembles his mother Lucrece of whom I also have a photo. Sorry this is so lengthly, but I wanted you all out there in computerized genealogy land to see if you tied into any of it, or could add or correct the scenerio.. Thanks for listening, Jo Ann in Olympia WA.

Go to Ancestry.com and where it says "Enter Your Ancestor's Name" put in George St. Clair in the slot that says Given Name(s), and Dowell in the slot for Last Name. Click Search. It will take you to a page with a hyperlink containing the name George St. Clair Dowell. Click on that hyperlink. It will take you to a tree containing at least some members of your family.
