Dowell's of Albemarle Author: Lynne Charles Date: 21 Aug 2000 12:00 PM GMT In Reply to: Dowell Land in Albemarle Co VA by: Deanna Egeland Dowell John Dowell of Albemarle Co., VA. was one of the pioneers who broke the virgin soil of the county. The history of Albemarle County, Virginia show John Dowell took 400 acres from the government in 1738, about eight years after the county was opened for settlement. By 1759 he had more than 1000 acres on Priddy's Creek. In about twenty years he had more than doubled his holdings. His estate was given to his wife, Mary, then after her death it was given to their children. Thomas Dowell's one of John's sons, had a plantation know as Lana. Lana was given to his wife Avey Warren and his children. I also came across an entry for James Dowell, son of Barnett Dowell, took his family and settled in a community on the North Folk of the Holston River which is today known as Dowell's Gap. This is located on the edge of Scott County, VA., about 15 miles from the city limits of Bristol, VA. James and his wife Annie Elizabeth Herrel, lived the remainder of their lives here, and died in Scott! Co., VA. They are buried approximately on mile from Dowell's Gap, in what is now known as Darthula Church Cemetery, at Hiltons, VA. I would love to know more...my g-g-grandfather was Ezekiel Dowell descendant of Pleasant/Thomas A./Thomas/John.
