Looking for the marriage license or bond for Simeon H. DOWELL to Rebecca Jane HAYDEN. supposedly mar. 6 Oct 1864 in Meade Co., KY. We are searching for documentation for his line.. he was the s on of William Harrison DOWELL [1816-1892] and Nancy DOWELL [1813-1905]. We have the names for the family, but are taking the documentation hunting a generation at a time. Any help is appreciated! Hi, I am a new subscriber to the list, and am searching for the burial site and probate records for William Harrison DOWELL to Nancy DOWELL. There were said to have been married in Meade Co., KY on 8 Oct 1835 [need marriage license] and he is said to have died on 21 Aug 1892 in Meade Co. Nancy is said to have died on 9 Apr 1905... assuming Meade Co., but have no documentation on any of these dates or events. William Harrison DOWELL was the son of George W. DOWELL and Mary Ann "Polly" WIMP, and Nancy was the dau. of James BOARD DOWELL and Barbara SHACKLETT. Would appreciate any help in locating any documentation that I need. Thanks! Lanita Sconce Miller Wichita, KS
According to Harry G. Holt's "History of Martin Co, IN" (1953), a John Dowell served in the Civil War in the 17th Regiment Co. A, from Martin Co, IN. Also a Charley Dowell, Sr. was a blacksmith sourth of Shoals. Does anyone know anything about these pair of Dowell fellows? Any help with Dowells in IN would be greatly appreciated. Renee L Dauven
Does anyone know if the Little Berr Dowell who is in Vigo Co, IN in the 1830 census (age 30-40) is the same Littleberry who is indexed as being in Breckenridge Co, KY in 1820 and 1840? I don't find a Littleberry there in 1830. Thanks for any help you may be able to give. Renee L. Dauven
I've "rescued" an old photograph album including 31 family photographs. Two photographs included in the album are identified: 1-Joseph I. HALL, probably taken in the 1870's or 1880's, no location 2-S.E. Marie DOWELL, taken at the Morrison Studio in Harrisonburg, VA when she was just 8 months old and 20 lbs., looks to have been taken in the 1880's or 1890's There are other photographs in the album which appear to also be of Joseph I. HALL or other male relatives who look very much like him leading me to believe that this is a family album. Most of the photographs are from Harrisonburg, however, there is at least one photograph of a gentlemen from Lima, Ohio and an infant from Carlisle, PA. Photographs in the album appear to date from the 1860's including some tin types. I'm hoping to locate someone from these families so that this precious collection of family photographs can be returned to family. If you are a member of one of these families or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

I recently made a trip to Southern Maryland where my first documented Dowell ancester, Philip, appeared about 300 years ago. My ancestors left that area for North Carolina shortly after the Revolution and then moved on to Missouri in the 1830s. However, some Dowells stayed on in Calvert County. I met one such distant cousin in January, Carolyn (Dowell) Mohler. If the information we have about Henry Dowell (1770-1829) being the son of Philip Dowell, Jr. is correct Carolyn and I are sixth cousins, once removed. Carolyn is a Dowell descendant who never left the Calvert County, MD area. In 1999 she finished editing a book of the reminiscences of her father, Arthur Wilson Dowell. The book is entitled Growing Up in Prince Frederick during the 1920's & 30's. It includes both family and local history.
