Surnames: Dowell, Hall, Duke Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AST.2ACEB/568.1.1 Message Board Post: Howdy, cousin! No, I don't know where Perlina died. She was still living in Breckinridge County in the 1930 Census. If I find out I'll write back. But I did get further verification of the shooting of Jess Hall. My Uncle Tommy's sister-in-law (age 84) confirmed that the incident happened and said it was well known around Clifton Mills / Garfield / Norton Valley at the time. She said that Perlina left Elijah Mart Dowell after the shooting and she assumed they divorced. Mart Dowell seems to have remarried twice: first to Liza (Unknown), c.1911; then to Abbie (Unknown), pre-1920. As for the house fire, my great-aunt and other family members said there were rumours at the time that the fire had been set. Supposedly Mart was pretty well off for a farmer, and there was speculation that he had a small fortune hidden in his home. I don't know how seriously to take this anecdote, which sounds more like folklore than fact. But I'm convinced that the shooting took place and hope to find more details - especially from newspaper accounts or court records. Because I live in another stae I rarley get to KY. But if I find any more info I'll certainly pass it along. By the way, Perlina Dowell was my g-g-grandfather Jim Chris Dowell's sister. Could we exchange some info? I have nothing on Jonas & Eliza Kennison's descendants. I'll gladly share with you anything that I have. For instance, do you know the story of Aunt Bertha & the snake....? Thanks for writing!

I know he died in a house fire (per the death certificate). However, I can not find where she died. I know she is at Horsley Chapel. Do you have any information on where she might have died?

    3. Unity O. DEVIN & Samuel H. DOWELL This couple married in 1876 in Polk County, Missouri. I've found them on the 1880 census in Polk County, then in subsequent years they were in the Indian Territory, Roosevelt County, New Mexico and in Sonoma County, California. I had known about their one son Frank who appeared with his parents on the 1880 census, but upon another look at a subsequent census I realized they had two other children: Ethel L. and an unknown child who was not living with the family in either 1900 or 1910. Ethel's age at the time of the 1910 census was listed as 23; however, she could have been older because at the time of the 1900 census her age was listed as 16 having been born in September 1883. What happened to her? The third child, gender & name unknown, needs to be identified. I am cross-posting to the Devin list with the hope that someone can help. Karen Venable lkvenable@earthlink.net

    3. Hi Glen, Thank you so much for responding. Your message gave me a little hope...! I agree that we may well be related as the families you mention, and the names you mentioned have circumstantially tied these people together. Also, I have found many connections indicating Dowells' association with Sniders/snyder/Schnider.s and Sandidge/Sandridge. I have some newspaper articles and information related to a William Dowell who was a minister in the area where Margaret/Margret died.He married into the family that paid for her funeral.(Bargers's). I will dig them up and post some of the information. Or if I find something related to your Dowell info I would send a picture of it if you want to give me your email address. I have collected quite a bit of info on George Dowell's family in Indiana, also. Need to dig it out. In the meantime I have entered information from a book (and I will post it today) related to the Sandidge/Dowell connections. Would love to help anyone untie a knot! I will also send anything I may find related to John and George. Please keep me in mind, as I will you. He lived in 1810 in Kentucky but by 1815 was in Jackson Co Tn where he lived until 1851 when he died.. His brother George Dowell moved from North Carolina to Monroe Co Indiana in about 1814 (I think going from memory here). George had a son James who married Patsy Coffey, and a daughter Polly who married Ruben Coffey another daughter Jane married a Moore. They all moved to indiana. Names that come down the line in these Dowells are America, Franklin, George, Ruben, Hickman, Martin, etc. I see you also mention a surname Terry. My John Dowells line is closely intermarried into the Terry family. One researcher also has my John with a son named George in Kentucky who married Polly Tomberlin and moved to Indiana or Illinois. I have never found anything to document a son named George for him. However, his line has the same names - R! ub! en Hickman, George Martin, America, so it is very very confusing. Good luck. I have been researching these Dowells since 1974 and still have not found George and John Dowell's parents in Albermarle Co VA. I have found John and Margaret on census records in 1860 in Indiana, in 1850 in Jefferson Co Ky. Later records only show Margret living with various children. May have found John in Martin County early 1800's and Breckinridge county in 1840. May have found John living with a sister Margaret and husband Walter Mounts in Saluda in 1870. 3. I will weigh in on the Dowell info. I have John Dowell born 1764 in Albermarle Co VA. KNow of one brother George born about 1757-61. Both served in revolutionary war. By 1778 they had moved to Burke Co NC and were also in wilkes Co for a time. John Married Sarah Hickman ended up in Jackson Co Tn and George married a Jane and ended up in Indiana. The Terry line is associated with John Dowells descendents. The Coffey and Moore line with George Dowell descendents. The name Redmon rings a bell in my feeble brain but not sure why and have to go digging thru my papers. I lost my online FTM info a few months ago and sure is a hindrance to me. My Dowells don't seem to belong to any of John who married Mary Major's children. I show the John, Thomas, Ambrose, William of the census you mention as their children. There were others also, I had listed their son John married Anne Franklin. I am very interested in your John Dowell and wondered if you have any children for him as ! John and George. George was adopted in 1771 by John Dowell (son of John and Mary). I've been trying to connect my men to the albermarle Co Dowells for many many years. I think they were but can't find the connection. Help most appreciated. Edithcook3@aol.com wrote:Have you found any of these people in the Federal Census list. I found a John, Thomas, Ambrose and William Dowell in the first USA Cenus in 1785. 2. Sorry, I should have mentioned this before. These marriages were in Macon County, North Carolina, and Vicy Redmond's parents were from Rabun County, Georgia. Hello, I have a marriage of Vicy Redman to James Dowell in 1848, and I have a marriage of Vicy Dowell to James Roper in 1879. In 1879 her parents were on the marriage certificate as Richard Redmon and Malinda Redmon. There have been references to Vicy Redman also being called Louisa Redman (Redmon, Redmond), who had a daughter Lucy Josephine Dowell who married Theodore C Welch. Does anyone have a source, documentation, or any information on Vicy Redman's full name? Thanks, Rick
