Hi, my mothers mother was a Dowell from the Mexico, Mo area. Her ggrandfather I believe was Nehemiah Dowell from Fauquier County, Va. Are you related to this line of Dowell's? So far they have been separated into 4 distinct and apparently unrelated groups originating in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. A fifth distinct line has been documented in England. Another Dewell member in the US may trace his line back to Germany. Three more members have just sent samples to the lab and their results will be known in a few weeks. So far we have not observed any close matches with McDowells who have been tested in spite of the many oral tales of such associations. Please contact me for more information. I have located the graves of Samuel and Elizabeth in Burlington but I cannot find anything on Richard and Martha. I did see the 1876 court document in which Samuel Cockayne signed over my husband's Grandfather to his daughter and her husband because Richard and Martha were deceased. Thanks very much for your info. I'll pursue the avenues you mentioned. I, too, wish we were related; it would probably help break down the brick wall of Zebedee Gray's parentage, too. Carlin Gray

I'm very interested in the John Dowell, whom you have born 1764 in Albemarle County, VA. Your post went on to discuss his brother, George, who went to Indiana. Do you know any more about John? My g-g-grandfather, Zebedee Gray, born 1795 in the WVA part of VA, married Nancy Maria Dowell in 1823 in Clarke County,VA. They had five sons. I believe, but have no proof, that Nancy's father was a John Dowell, probably a farmer, in Clarke County. If you have any information, I'd be glad to share mine. Carlin Gray
John Dowell was my g g g grandfather. I know his children and his line very well and he had no daughter named Nancy Maria. In 1778 John moved to Burke Co N.C. along with his brother George. In 1797 he married Sarah Elizabeth Hickman in Wilkes co NC. In 1810 they were in Cumberland Co KY and in 1815 settled in Jackson Co TN where John died in 1851 and Sarah in 1871. Their children were: John Martin, Reuben Hickman, Emma, Elvira, Frances America, Clara, Patsy and Sophia. There is a Dowell website where much Dowell info is being exchanged by many great long time researchers. Do you know of James E Dowell (Albermarle Dowells) or Dave Dowell (Maryland Dowells) both long time researchers. They are administrators of the sites. Anyway about 5 distinct Dowell Groups have been developed from DNA testing and info is shared on the site. If you are interested in joining the site I can tell you who to contact. For some reason I seem to recall seeing soemthing about W VA Dowells on that site but can't recall any details. Anyway, might be an avenue to pursue. Good luck and I wish we were related. My old John and his brother George seem to have just appeared and be unrelated to any other Dowells in US in the 1750s!!! George and John both served in the Rev. George and his family of children: Polly who married Reuben coffey, James who married Martha Coffey, and Jane who married an Allen and a Moore (I think - memory here) all moved to Monroe Co, Ind and then to Owen Co Il about 1832-33. Theories abound about other George's relationship to "my" two Dowell. One George Dowell born in 1787 or thereabout married a Polly/Mary Tomberlin/Vincent and settled in Indiana/Illinois. His children were named so identical to my old John of the Rev children that there must be a connection to "my" John/George but it has yet to be found. Another George of Indiana married a Mary Hilem (I think) and his daughter spoke of an Uncle John of the Rev.....again, for years speculation on any kinship of these 2 George's to our Dowells. DNA testing is being conducted that would prove or disprove the relat! ionship. If you know any male Dowell descendents who would like to test (fee is about $150) I can tell you the site and who to contact. To date, descendents of George and John Dowell of the revolution match no other Dowells in the US who have tested and seem to be a unique band of Dowells!!
