Surnames: Hodgins, Mooney, Armitage, Ireland, Woolsey Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dowell/555.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I wonder if we have a connection. I have Ann HODGINS (b. abt. 1790, d. bef. 1833) m. 1811 John MOONEY, in the Diocese of Killaloe, Tipperary. They had daughters Frances (b 1812); Susan, Elizabeth & Mary. I also have ARMITAGES: Mary ARMITAGE b. about 1821 (or possibly 1814) in Tipperary, m. 1842 William IRELAND, d. 1875 in North Onslow, Pontiac, Quebec. (Their daughter Sarah Jane married a WOOLSEY). Family records differ as to Mary's father although they are from the Armitages that came from the Cloughjordan, Borrisokane area of Tipperary. Some records suggest her father was Francis "Big Ben" ARMITAGE (b. Newtown Mills, Tipperary; d. Canada 1839), another that it could be James of Torbolton, Ontario & still another that it was Richard. You can see that branch of my tree is a bit of a mystery. If these are your Armitages, I do have some information about them after they came to Canada. I would also love to find out who Ann Hodgins parents or siblings are. I did some work for a relative who also has a lot of Hodgins from Tipperary that wound up in Biddulph. I look forward to hearing if any of these names are familiar.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Dowell, Dewell Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/mbexec/msg/5538/AST.2ACEB/574 Message Board Post: The Dowell Y-Chromosome DNA Project is now more than two years old. So far we have results back on 20 males. These results have identified two distinctly separate groups of early settlers of Colonial Virginia and one group of early settlers of Colonial Maryland, some of whom migrated to North Carolina right after the Revolutionary War. In addition, two Dewells biologically unrelated to each other or to any of the Dowells have been tested. One Dowell from England and one from early North Carolina have also been tested who are outliers from any of the other males so far tested. We are actively seeking male Dowells from various parts of the UK to join our project. If you or anyone you know would be willing to be pursuaded to join our endeavor, please contact me for more information. All that is required from you is a few swabs from the inside of your cheek. So far we have not matched with any of the McDowells tested although many oral traditions suggest connections.

    3. Hi Dana, I don't belong to the line of Dowells who descended from Nehemiah. However, there are several regulars at the Dowell Family History site at MyFamily.com who claim descent from a Nehemiah Dowell of Prince William County, VA. Could this be your Nehemiah? If so let me know and I will see that you get an invitation and password to get into that site. My Dowells originated from Maryland. So far they have been separated into 4 distinct and apparently unrelated groups originating in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. A fifth distinct line has been documented in England. Another Dewell member in the US may trace his line back to Germany. Three more members have just sent samples to the lab and their results will be known in a few weeks. So far we have not observed any close matches with McDowells who have been tested in spite of the many oral tales of such associations. Please contact me for more information.
