    1. [DOVER-L] Cherokee Co., TX Dover
    2. Diane, Several years ago, I corresponded with Joseph L. McGriff in Odessa, TX. His line was also William Simpson Dover. Joe related the following information: Sometime between 1850 and 1855 he (Wm. Simpson) and his family moved to Cherokee Co., TX. This move included those children still living at home as well as those who had already married with the possible exception of one daughter Ann, that has not been traced. One source says Ann made at least one visit to TX and returned to GA. They most probably moved by wagon train with some of their neighbors, because a comparison of the 1850 GA census and the 1860 Cherokee Co., TX census list some of the same names still settled near each other, and intermarried with each other. The family settled somewhere in the area between Jacksonville and Rusk, TX, probably near Craft, TX, around FM 22. William Simpson Dover died between 1860 and 1862 when his heirs presented his estate for probate. A copy of the 11 pages is on file at the court house in Rusk, TX. The Administrators of the estate named were his wife Lucy Alice Dover and his son Campbell C. Dover. On the copy of the probate papers a James C. Dover has already died and left his property to William and Lucy Dover. It is assumed that this is their son James Camadore, who is supposed to have been living in Erath Co., TX. Some sources say that James Camadore Dover was married to a Catherine Clark, others say he lived to have children. If he died, what happened to his family?-- Why was his estate given to his parents? He would have been about 24 years old at the time. One source has given his death date as 1858. William Simpson is most probably buried in Jarratt Cem. in an unmarked grave. Lucy is also supposed to be buried there. Many of the older stones were simply chiseled onto a large rock and with time have worn smooth or been moved away. Jarrett Cem. is located on FM 22 near Craft, TX. The land was donated in 1858 for that use by Wade and Henry Morris Jarrett--two brothers who married daughters of William S. and Lucy Dover. Joe related the children of William Simpson as: 1. Anderson Dover b.5 Jul 1824 d. 27 Aug 1906 buried at Wesley Chapel Cem. west of Bluffdale, TX md. Eliza Odom (Adams) 2.
