A native of Guilford County, she was a retired cosmologist, a member of the American Business Women's Association, a member of the Goodwill Club of the the Craft Recreation Center, and a member of Reedy Fork Baptist Church. Surviving are husband, Lonnie M. Darnell; son, Capt. Eddy Whiteside of Kinston; daughters, Mrs. Betty D. Turner of LaGrange, Mrs. Linda Gillis of Greensboro; brother, France Smith of Greensboro; sisters, Mrs. Mae Dover of Mathews, Mrs. Donnie Gregory, Mrs. Faye Chandler, both of Greensboro. Surviving are sons, Jefferson Walker of Albany, N.Y., Alfred Walker of Greensboro; daughters, Iola Perdue of Pahokee, Fla., Ora Mae McReroy of Deerfield, Fla., Marian Clarke of Felton, Del.; brother, Horace Mathis Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister, Flora Pitts of Adel, Ga.; four grandchildren.
