Private Joshua Dover. attest: John Jenkins, Deputy Muster Master, Provincial Forces. comment: I don't know if this is the same Joshua Dover born on Haw River or not and these three pages are the only notations I was able to find with him listed as a Loyalist. The following exerpt is from the same book...could it explain what happened??? "When Charleston fell to the British on May 12, 1780, the restoration of SC to Royal goverment was placed under two peace commisioners. Some members of the rebel army were given paroles and either sent to their homes or to the prison islands off the coast of Charleston after signing a pledge such as....I....of the Parish of.....in the province of SC, acknowledge myself to be a prisoner to his majesty's troops, and hereby promise upon my parole of honor, that I will repair to St John's Island and thereby remain until regularily exchanged, or permitted or ordered to remove; and while a prisoner, I will not write, speak, or act directly or indirectly against his Majesty's interest, and that I will surrender myself at any time and at any place, when ordered by the Commander -in -Chief or any other of his Majesty's officers." I've wondered if had he been captured, would he have signed a loyalty pledge in exchange for freedom from prison??? Anyone have any ideas about this? As I said, I don't know if it is the same Joshua we've been tracking, but it would be interesting to find out. bj
