    1. [DOVER-L] Key Players in the "Gen. of the Dover Family"
    2. John Dover ( s/o John the originator) was b.ca1779 d.21 Jan 1866 md Elizabeth (last name unknown) b.ca1789 d.29 Mar 1856. These dates according to cemetery markers that give dod and age. The 1850 census gives their ages as 65 which would make them both b.ca1785. (Cemetery markers are not always accurate, either. A lot of times they were placed by later descendants.) The 1850 census listed children still living at home: Mahala, Francis, William and Willis. If this John Dover didn't die until 1866, he has not been found on 1860 census so far. Children of John and Elizabeth Dover : 1. Martin Dover b.8 Jul 1811 d. 28 Nov 1885 md #1 Matilda Jenkins #2 Mrs. Mary Hayes Cobb. 2. Celia "Sealy" Dover b.24 Dec 1812 d. 20 Dec 1899 md Berryman Moss 3. John Dover b.22 May 1816 d. 18 Jul 1889 md Dorinda Louisa Whisonant 4. Thomas C Dover b.ca 1819 md Lovina L Givens/Gibbons 5. Mahala Dover b.ca 1820 6. Frances "Fannie" Dover b.ca1823 7. Zepheniah Dover b.ca1825 md Adilede Hullender 8. Asa Dover b.ca1828 md Sarah (last name unk) 9. William Dover b.ca1829 d.1919 md Mary Theresa Whittice 10.Willis Dover b.Jun 1831 md #1 Mrs. Martha (Moss) Dover - widow of a James Dover #2 Betty A. (last name unk) Other names mentioned in the "1934 Gen" and the "Gen of Dover Family" : 1. J R Dover is John Randolph Dover b.14 Dec 1858 d.18 Oct 1931 and is the grandson of Martin Dover. 2. F H Dover is Felix Hill Dover b. Jan 1844 and is the son of John Dover/Dorinda Whisonant. 3. O A Dover is Oscar A Dover b.ca 1871 and the son of Felix Hill Dover. 4. John E Dover b.10 Sept 1888 d. 23 Feb 1941 and is the son of William Dover/Mary Whittice 5. Abraham Hardin b.22 June 1789 d. 16 Jan 1881 - There are very strong Hardin connections in the family line of John Dover/Dorinda Whisonant. Abraham Hardin was already dead before John E Dover was born. 6. Mary Dover b. 9 Jan 1762 d. 5 May 1835 md. Col Frederick Hambright of Rev War fame (named as Sallie in the "Gen") is supposed to be "of the first generation." Her date of birth precedes the supposed 1765 arrival date of John the Originator. The only reference that I have found so far says that she was from the Piedmont Section of the Carolinas, but did not give a place of birth. 7. Asa Dover is Asa Augusta Dover b.5 Dec 1843 d.22 May 1924 and is the son of a James Dover and the stepson of Willis Dover named above. 8. Elijah Dover was listed as 90 years old, b.ca1770, on the 1860 census living on the "poor farm" and is not found on the 1870 census. If Mary (Dover) Hambright is of the first generation and and the "writer" doesn't know of any names of the girls in the second generation, and Sealy, Mahala and Fannie are of the third generation, what is he saying? Is Mary (Dover) Hambright actually the sister of John Dover the Originator, or did he leave out a whole generation????? Zepheniah Dover and wife Adelide left SC and were in GA 1860 census. Is he the Zephaniah who moved to GA? William Dover and wife Mary Theresa md 1863 Whitfield Co,GA and ended up at Chattanooga, TN. Could he be the William who is supposed to have moved to Western NC and East TN? We have not located an earlier William Dover that fits this data. Where does this 1765 arrival date come from? Does anyone know if there really is a Fall River, Mass? There were Dover men in North Carolina long before 1765!!!! By the way, John Eagleston who wrote " Dover Origins" is not a Dover descendant. He is a descendant of Col Frederick Hambright and his #1 wife Sarah Hardin. I contacted him once to see if he had any data on Mary Dover's place of birth. He said all the Dover data he had was included in his paper. He only went as far as 1820, I believe it was, looking for some of his Hambright ancestors. So, there you have it folks. You are all welcome in helping us sort out the facts from fiction in the "Genealogy of the Dover Family" and the 1934 "Genealogy." Sharon S
