There's a couple of things here, one of which is the results of one of the DNA tests yesterday. You're are welcome to challenge, ask for clarifications or just offer your comments about some of the possibilities here. Bailey Dover appears in Sketches. It says he was a judge and a man of means. No known children. Sketches also says that he is not related to Sherrod Dover living next door to him in one census. Sherrod was the son of Frederick and Jane Dover from Lumpkin County and all the other Dover's in the index are connected with Sherrod and Frederick. Bailey (the elder) came to Rabun County, Georgia by 1830 from Buncombe County, North Carolina. He appears in the 1820 Buncombe census next door to a John Dover who could be his father. Bailey was born about 1791 SC. The 1830 census for Buncombe County shows four Dover's living side by side, Frederick (married to Margaret), Jeptha, Elijah and John Dover. Not far away is a John Dover (born before 1770) who could be their father and the father of Bailey Dover who went to Rabun County. Frederick Dover is missing in the 1840 census for Buncombe County, but appears to be the same Frederick living next door to Bailey Dover in Rabun County as well as a "Rial" Dover. Frederick & Margaret Dover of Buncombe County appear to have been in Rabun County in 1840 and then back in Buncombe County in 1850 before going to Gilmer County, Georgia by 1860. Jeptha Dover from 1830 Buncombe, from Marjorie's research, challenged the probate administration of Bailey Dover's widow Ellender after her death. Jeptha was also living in the same home with widow Margaret Dover in 1880 Gilmer County. One of Frederick & Margaret's sons was Dillingham Dover who was living next door in Gilmer County with his family. From that family came a descendant who took the DNA tests that came out yesterday. He's Jason G. Dover who is the father of Phillis on our list. Jason matches perfectly on the 12 markers with the family of Francis J. Dover which is the most amazing thing I have seen in all the years I've been digging. I have always suspected that my proven John Dover born 1793 was the John Dover in the 1820 (John Dover, Jr.) and 1830 Buncombe census. I'm not as sure about that now because I now match up perfectly with Eric Dover a descendant of Francis Marion Dover b about 1799 SC. The question here is what is the relationship between Francis Marion Dover and my proven John Dover b abt 1793??? Brothers, cousins??? I suspect my John's father was the elder John Dover in 1820 and 1830 Buncombe County. I also suspect that Francis Marion's father was Hezekiah Dover. I also match 99.9% with the descendants of Francis J. Dover. I have the feeling that maybe Francis J. Dover and his proven brother Hezekiah do have a brother after all that we never knew about. I've always thought about that and I've always come up with a John Dover as a possibility. It's not that straight forward yet but it's sure a lot narrower than it was before yesterdays results. Jason's results prove that at least one of those four 1830 Buncombe Dover's is a direct connection with Francis J. Dover. Buncombe was not another planet afterall. -----Original Message----- From: Robert Barnes [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, December 28, 2003 5:31 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Dover] DOVER and GREEN The book, 'Sketches of Rabun County History', contains an all name index which includes several DOVER'S and GREEN'S. My only comment is it seems extremely unlikely (understatement?) that Bailey DOVER is NOT related, in some manner, to the other DOVER'S in the same locale; especially a next door neighbor named DOVER, i.e. Sherrod DOVER. All these DOVER'S may not be from the same branch but they are from the same tree. R. Robert, I have to say I agree wholeheartedly. Given the time frame & modes of transportation at the time, it was nearly unheard of for there not to be some sort of relationship between surnames in an area.
