Please excuse me if I've posted this one before. If any of you happen to be researching at the courthouse in Cherokee County, AL, please take a look at the marriage records (should be in the probate office) and send me the marriage date for Nick and Mary: Nicodemus (Nick) was born September 07, 1870, and died December 10, 1936 in Cordova, Walker County, AL, burial Arley, AL, Mt. Hope Cemetery. He married MARY L. BATTLES, daughter of ANNA. She was born April 19, 1862, and died March 22, 1930 in Arley, AL, burial Mt. Hope Cemetery. In 1870, Nicodemus' parents were in Union County, Georgia, newly married with no children. Nicodemus was born in September of that year. By 1880, his parents had moved to Cherokee County, AL, Township 10, District 23. The 1880 census lists Benjamin and Mary as being 34; Nicodemus is listed as being 10; Absolum (later called Abner D.) is listed as being 9; Garland O. is listed as age 6, and Ann is listed as age 4. Nicodemus apparently married around 1890 since his first child was born in 1892. In 1897, Nicodemous Dover entered a homestead claim for 159.08 acres in Winston (Section 35, Township 11-S, 7-W Range (N1/2NW). In the 1900 census, Nick Dover appears as age 29, with his wife Mary Battles Dover, age 38. They have a daughter Lily, age 8, a son Luther T, age 5, a son William B., age 4, and another daughter, Mary E. Dover, age 2. Living with them is Anne E. Battles, age 72, Mary's mother. In 1910, Nick Dover is listed as age 40, with his wife Mary listed as 46. Their son Luther is now 16, Benjamin is 14, and Mary is 12. They were living at Dismal, in Winston County, AL. She indicated she had 5 children and 5 were living; however, only three children appear on the census records. Nick was working in a general store. In 1920, Nick (indexed as Wick) Dover was 50 and living at Cordova in Walker County, AL. Nick was an operator in a saw mill. Mary was 58. Living with them was Arvel Foster (son-in-law) and daughter Lily, 28 and 27, respectfully. Lily had a daughter, Lottie, age 5, and a son Otha (Arthur Or Otis?) age 3 and 5 months. In March 1930, Mary passed away, and the census shows Nick as N. Dova, in Walker County, Precinct 12. He is listed as household 59A, his daughter Lily Foster is at Household 59 with her family. He is a truck farmer. Lily's husband Arvel (A.R. Foster) is a pilot of a river boat. Alabama death information gives his age as 68 at death as December 10, 1936 in Cordova in Walker County, AL, but his parents married in 1869, so he would have been born after that. He was listed as the widower of Mary Battles, the son of Ben and Mary Gaines Dover, both born in Georgia. His is buried at Arley Cemetery in Winston County, AL. Son Luther Dover, Route 4, Jasper, AL provided the information for the death certificate. Marjorie Dover Stansel
