Lawrence is the grandson of John Dover and Lucinda Fox of Buncomb. I have never seen this John referred to as "Jr", however. He is also my father's uncle. My father is still alive and did do the DNA test. The results were inconclusive as I recall. Dennis, Would you like to comment on my dad's results because I am still "fuzzy" about where he does/doesn't fit. Cathy Dover Tapey Anchorage, AK
The DNA results did not match with any of the other existing Dover results. That means that this is either a separate Dover family, an adoption or an out of wedlock birth. Kathy and I talked about this a little when the results came out. There could be medical related things, but that doesn't seem to be a factor. I say that because I talked to the DNA people about this and another question relating to the reliability of DNA results by males who have been through chemotherapy or exposed to Agent Orange. I was told that neither chemotherapy or Agent Orange has had any affect in altering DNA results by those who have tested. Focusing on Elijah and his son John Dover, I suspect that the John Dover, Jr. in 1820 Buncombe is the same John Dover in 1830 living next door to Elijah, Frederick and Jeptha Dover. That John should be my 3rd great grandfather. Frederick's proven descendant has been tested and matches with the proven descendants of Francis J. Dover for having a most recent common ancestor. Whether or not that is my John Dover in 1820 and/or 1830, I tie into a most recent common ancestor with Francis J. Dover. My paper trail seems to support a Buncombe location but it's still not conclusive without some golden record or an unknown 1820 NC census for another John Dover who had a son born 1815-1820. I quit if there's anymore John's ... mine or not. Elijah Dover ties into his son John Dover married to Lucinda through the will of Elijah. No question there. Jeptha, no known living descendants for possible DNA tests. Jeptha Dover ties into a John Dover in Buncombe by deeds twice. Kathy's dad is the only test for Elijah and the third other test for those four Dover's living side by side in 1830. One result from one line is not sufficient. One other thing that is a possibility for the answer on Kathy's dads results in an old unverified source that researched the Elijah Dover and allied families many years ago who said that Elijah Dover in Buncombe was an adopted son. I may be the only one who ever heard that. It goes back to when I was a "kid" just starting out thinking I could wrap up all the questions in a couple of months. I've tried very hard to get some more DNA results from proven descendants of Elijah Dover that I know. Several of you on the list have possible connections too with Elijah or the others in early Buncombe. There are no known living males with those that I know or can find. I will share one really sad thing about the DNA tests. One of the "major" Dover questions with early roots in Buncombe and likely York, SC had a living descendant who died before he could complete his DNA kit that had arrived in the mail. -----Original Message----- From: AKma2many@aol.com [mailto:AKma2many@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, February 19, 2006 12:29 PM To: DOVER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Dover] Lawrence E Dover Lawrence is the grandson of John Dover and Lucinda Fox of Buncomb.
