Elly & Patsy Dover were members in 1807. The Ponder's were from York. Many of these families are familiar, some from the York area and Pendleton, SC. As a general location of the church (it's still there) ... Newfound Creek and Turkey Creek area where the Dover's lived. I have one idea on Elly Dover, but it can never be proved unless a marriage record is found. Bailey Dover of Rabun County, Georgia was in Buncombe in 1820 (married) with a male 16-25 in their household and left for Rabun after the census. Bailey said his wife Elley (Ellender) had been a member of the Baptist Church for 56 years when he wrote his will in 1861 (1805). Note Wes Patterson's comments about handwriting. http://wespatterson.com/nc/buncombe/newfound.asp
Thanks for the post. Sometimes, the names don't seem to connect, but this time, I had a bell ring! My husband descended from William Addington who married Delilah "Dee" Duncan. her mother was Jane Duncan, and many of these were in Buncombe County near John Dover. I descend from the Plemons (sometimes also referred to as Flemings) who were in the same area. I'm grateful for the additional data. Back to the Dovers, Elly could be Ellender, but that would mean she and Bailey married before 1807, and she would be around 17 in 1807. Bailey's will made in 1861 stated he and his wife were together 51 years, so if that's correct, then they married around 1810 (after census?). It is possible, however, that the 1807 list included folks who were members "around that time", rather than "just" in 1807. A John Dover sold 50 acres in Buncombe to Samuel Frisby in September 1807 (north side of unnamed river), and in October 1807, Abraham Dover purchased 40 acres from James Pierce in Buncombe (west side of French Broad). We don't know if they're the same person; however, we believe the John Dover on the 1810 Pendleton census was the same John Dover who appears in Buncombe in 1820. It is possible that a Dover was still in Buncombe but didn't show up on the census. The John Dover in Pendleton had two females in his household (excluding Alsey Dover who married William Edwards?), and they "could be" Patsy and Elly. At least we now have the names of two Dover females.
