It may be that he couldn't write at the time (or wasn't present?), because I have seen a Civil pay chit that he signed for. It wasn't "his mark", it was a signature. I may try to get a copy of it. > -----Original Message----- > From: sromanek [mailto:sromanek@salisbury.net] > Sent: Sunday, July 31, 2005 11:24 PM > To: DOVER-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [Dover] William Alfred Dover Last Proven date alive > > According to pension application papers that I have copies > of, the last date I can confirm that William Alfred Dover > was alive was July 1, 1901. If he had had a stroke (which usually leaves one side of the body paralyzed), he probably would not have been able to write. I would suspect if the paralysis was caused by a stroke that he would not have lived long after that occurred. The fact that he lived a year without being able to walk is remarkable.
