Roy Cotnam was the 1st husband of Ara Dover. He was a Circuit Minister or Traveling Minister. He and Grandpa John Franklin Dover preached "Brush Arbors". Leota was not the daughter of Roy & Ara but was born from another relationship he had with someone else. I do not know all the details but she was not Ara's natural child. I will look at the info for Roy as soon as possible. I am not able to do so now and would like to see it. Ara and Roy divorced. She married again to a Peter Gabel b. September 03, 1907-October 1976 Fresno, Fresno Co, Ca. Ara was born April 06, 1890 & died August 18, 1956 Fowler, Fresno County, California. She could preach a sermon in a second from what I heard of her and was tough as nails. She went hunting for one of her brothers in a brothel at one time. :-) A niece who had just gotten her drivers license went with her and was sworn to secrecy. The niece is still living and told me about it. Said Ara was something else. I have not been able to find Fred and Martha in 1930 either despite hours of looking for them. Edna just died within the last few years. I got to meet her and ask her several things but her memory was fading at that time. She did tell me a few things. She never knew W.A. Dover or remembered hearing of him. She knew Henry Anderson and use to ride with him on his wagon to peddle vegetables, wares etc. He was a Huckster. None of the children of Fred & Martha are still living. Below is what I know of them. I knew several of them when I was a little girl growing up in Chattanooga. Allen Davis who did the funeral for Roy McNabb was the same Minister who married my parents in 1953. I hope some of the helps and that it will make it to the list. Please excuse me if I've posted this one before. If any of you happen to be researching at the courthouse in Cherokee County, AL, please take a look at the marriage records (should be in the probate office) and send me the marriage date for Nick and Mary: Nicodemus (Nick) was born September 07, 1870, and died December 10, 1936 in Cordova, Walker County, AL, burial Arley, AL, Mt. Hope Cemetery. He married MARY L. BATTLES, daughter of ANNA. She was born April 19, 1862, and died March 22, 1930 in Arley, AL, burial Mt. Hope Cemetery. In 1870, Nicodemus' parents were in Union County, Georgia, newly married with no children. Nicodemus was born in September of that year. By 1880, his parents had moved to Cherokee County, AL, Township 10, District 23. The 1880 census lists Benjamin and Mary as being 34; Nicodemus is listed as being 10; Absolum (later called Abner D.) is listed as being 9; Garland O. is listed as age 6, and Ann is listed as age 4. Nicodemus apparently married around 1890 since his first child was born in 1892. In 1897, Nicodemous Dover entered a homestead claim for 159.08 acres in Winston (Section 35, Township 11-S, 7-W Range (N1/2NW). They have a daughter Lily, age 8, a son Luther T, age 5, a son William B., age 4, and another daughter, Mary E. Dover, age 2. Living with them is Anne E. Battles, age 72, Mary's mother. In 1910, Nick Dover is listed as age 40, with his wife Mary listed as 46. Their son Luther is now 16, Benjamin is 14, and Mary is 12. They were living at Dismal, in Winston County, AL. She indicated she had 5 children and 5 were living; however, only three children appear on the census records. Nick was working in a general store. In 1920, Nick (indexed as Wick) Dover was 50 and living at Cordova in Walker County, AL. Nick was an operator in a saw mill. Mary was 58. Living with them was Arvel Foster (son-in-law) and daughter Lily, 28 and 27, respectfully. Lily had a daughter, Lottie, age 5, and a son Otha (Arthur Or Otis?) age 3 and 5 months. In March 1930, Mary passed away, and the census shows Nick as N. Dova, in Walker County, Precinct 12. He is listed as household 59A, his daughter Lily Foster is at Household 59 with her family. He is a truck farmer. Lily's husband Arvel (A.R. Foster) is a pilot of a river boat. Alabama death information gives his age as 68 at death as December 10, 1936 in Cordova in Walker County, AL, but his parents married in 1869, so he would have been born after that. He was listed as the widower of Mary Battles, the son of Ben and Mary Gaines Dover, both born in Georgia. His is buried at Arley Cemetery in Winston County, AL. Son Luther Dover, Route 4, Jasper, AL provided the information for the death certificate. Marjorie Dover Stansel
John Franklin Dover is Dover #198 in my FTW file, so I've just updated my records on him and will post what I have (other than the WWI draft form which was recently posted): In 1900, John F. Dover was 17 years old and living with his parents at Pisgah in Jackson County, AL. In 1910, J.F. Dover, 27, was living in Hamilton County, Chattanooga, TN, working as a carpenter, Wife Lillie M. was 26 years old, had had 2 children and 2 were living: John M. and James E. were both 1 year old. In 1920, John F. Dover (indexed as Doree) is still living in Chattanooga, Hamilton, GA. He is 36 years old and a minister. His wife Lilly is 35. They have one son James E., age 10 (He is the twin that survived). I had a note that a daughter Nellie was born in 1916 and died in 1921 of typhoid fever, but she is not listed on this census and perhaps died earlier?. In 1930, John F. Dover (indexed as John H. Doner), is still in Chattanooga (on Kelly Street). He is 46 and a mechanic for an auto company. Wife Lillie is a laundress at home and is the same age. They both married at age 24. James E. is at home, and he is now 21. He was born in Georgia and is a saleman for a drug company. They have a new son, Raymond, age 5. Marjorie Dover Stansel
Randy, I did some research in Bledsoe County, TN and surrounding counties looking for anything on Joshua Dover. I wound up providing a copy of his revolutionary war application to the local library there sometime last year, just so they would have something. There was also a Joshua Dover who served in the War of 1812, but only a reference appears to exist to that service. About cemeteries and headstones for these older Dover's, as far as we know, no one definitely knows where Francis, Joshua, Hezekiah, or others of this era are buried. Their stones were generally only fieldstones. But, we're still looking! I have that Johnson Dover filed a claim on behalf of his father Francis. But the point is valid, was he allowed to do that? And why was Francis OK at some point, then not considered a veteran at another. Did Joshua receive a land grant? BTW I see he died in Pikeville. That's just about 45 miles from my house. Do you have a cemetery name? Also, do you know if anyone has a picture of Francis' headstone? (If he has one.) And what is the name of the cemetery. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dennis Dover" <ddover1793@earthlink.net> To: <DOVER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, August 11, 2005 2:51 PM Subject: RE: [Dover] Revolutionary War records > This reference has always baffled me because I wonder if there's a > hint that there might possibly be additional Joshua Dover > information after the date of his rejection in 1834 (and his death) > and a "later" claim by a family member whose name certainly exists > but we have no clue who they would have been. This reference has always baffled me because I wonder if there's a hint that there might possibly be additional Joshua Dover information after the date of his rejection in 1834 (and his death) and a "later" claim by a family member whose name certainly exists but we have no clue who they would have been. The 1852 date in this reference is what prompts the interest because it was in 1852 that Johnson Dover filed a claim on his father's service. Admittedly Johnson filed just after his father died, so that could be a coincidence with what follows. I've not found any reference so far that the US Govt may have passed a law in 1851/1852 that may have provided some sort of possible further benefits to the families of RS veterans. Whether or not there was a law brings up the question, is there something more in Joshua's file(s) hinted at "expanded in 1852 to include later records." I believe this is one of the missing William Dover's, and I can understand why: In 1920, William Dover is living at Rossville in Walker County, Georgia. His age is given as 30 or 36; however, it seems clear this is the William Dover who was 50 in 1910 in Etowah County, AL. He is a widower, born in Alabama, both parents born in Alabama, and he is working as a spooler in a woolen mill. His daughter Roxie is 40 and not employed. David L., 36, is listed as "brother" and is living with him (perhaps they meant the brother of Roxie?) and was a laborer. Myrtle M., age 21, referred to as a sister, was also a spooler in a woolen mill. Also living with the family was 48 year old Albert Witlock, a boarder. I was tracking another Dover when I ran across this and decided to take a closer look. Marjorie Dover Stansel
I believe this is Wiley Dover's son: In 1920, Homer D. Dover (indexed as Douer), is living in Etowah County, AL, Alabama City (Wyonia Avenue). He is a loom fixer in a cotton mill, is 35 years old, born in Alabama, both parents born in TN. His wife Maggie, age 39, was born in Mississippi. They had one daughter, Minnie, 3 years and 10 months.
