As far as we know Madison Mathias Dover, Jr. is probably correct. We don't have anything to confirm or disprove it though. What are the salt lists of Pickens Co., GA? We are very new at this. When or if we do find some pictures of some of the older generations, we will be glad to share them with you. All we have right now is those of my immediate family.

    1. need help Civil War
    2. Hi all, I have been spending a great deal of time researching the children of Royal DOVER of Buncombe NC, and their related families, trying to find any clues about Royal. My husband is descended from his son William F. I have a strong feeling about something, and was hoping someone could help. Do we have any NC residents on this list that would be willing to obtain Civil War records from the NC Archives for me? Thomas E. DOVER enlisted stating his residence was Buncombe Co, NC. He enlisted as a Private on 08 July 1861 at the age of 16 in Company F, 16th Infantry Regiment, NC. He was wounded on 31 May at Seven Pines, VA, wounded 26 June 1862 at Mechanicsville, VA. He died of his wounds on 28 July 1862 in Richmond, VA. I believe that this was the youngest son of Royal DOVER. I will send for this myself, for the $20 out of state fee, if no one is able to help. I would be happy to reimburse any cost involved. The last time I sent for a record from the NC Archives for $20, I got a page out of the NC Soldiers book that I have at my local library. In the past I have gotten better information, but I'm a little leery now. The way I understand it, NC residents only pay for copying costs. Money is quite tight at my house right now, but I'm sure I'm not alone! Please forgive me, if I've offended anyone! Kathy Adamson in Illinois

    1. Re: [Dover] Sherrod J.Dover father of Eliza Ann Dover Owen
    2. Sherod Dover was probably from NC. His first wife, the mother of his only child Eliza Ann, is unknown. (Eliza was probably born about 1833) On 27 Jan 1834, Sherod J married 2nd wife Frances Hammonds in Marengo CO ALA and in 1834 moved to the Bastrop TX area. Sherod became a member of Captain Coleman's company composed of Bastrop CO area men. It has been passed down in some stories that he was killed during the Battle of the Alamo. While it's true that he was killed at Bexar, it was probably just before the Siege of Bexar when immigrant settlers and a group of Tejanos fought for and took control of the Alamo. That 5 day battle was in Dec 1835. Sherod J Dover was shot in the back and killed by a soldier from his own company in November 1835...the next morning, men from his company killed the man who had shot him. t\The Battle for the Alamo (the one with Crockett, Bowie and Travis... was a 13 day battle ending March 6, 1836. Eliza Ann Dover was his only child and so his Dover named line ended with her. bj

    2. The following is what I have gathered from Ancestry and from Myra Moody's posts: ROBERT NATHANIEL DOVER was born October 1868 in Georgia, and died December 20, 1944 in Madison County, GA. He married LILLY M. ALLEN. (last name from Myra Moody's post to Dover-L) She was born December 1875 in Georgia. In 1900, Robert N. Dover, age 31, was living at Tallulah in Rabun County, Ga. 2. Randy Dover
    3. Dennis, Did you see my note about the "private soldier"? The first several times I read that, I just read it as if he was a private in the military. Then one day it jumped out at me...it actually reads "He was a private soldier at ANKRUMS [Ancrum's]". He was A private soldier. I have the feeling that he wasn't just A private. I think he was somewhat up in ranks. He survived Sumter's Defeat, Gates' Defeat, Cowpens and Guilford's Courthouse. That indicated some longevity during wartime. The nature of war being what it is, longevity leads to promotion. He was in York District. I got this from a Revolutionary War researcher, not a genealogy researcher "York county was an ugly place to be. It was kinda like living in Bosnia. every one was literally fighting every one. It could be more properly defined as a civil war there than a revolution.". According to his pension application he stated "Entered service as a volunteer private soldier in GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C", then he stated "then enlisted in either July or August 1779 in the Regular Continental Army under Gen. Green[e]". He was both a militia AND a Continental Regular. Kind of made me glad and a little proud to see that William A. had made SGT. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dennis Dover" <ddover1793@earthlink.net> To: <DOVER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 29, 2005 8:54 PM Subject: [Dover] RE: Ranger History > Randy, > > I had some notes that I can't locate but maybe that's good for now > so this is less confusing on the surface.
