Thanks for the post. Sometimes, the names don't seem to connect, but this time, I had a bell ring! My husband descended from William Addington who married Delilah "Dee" Duncan. her mother was Jane Duncan, and many of these were in Buncombe County near John Dover. I descend from the Plemons (sometimes also referred to as Flemings) who were in the same area. I'm grateful for the additional data. Back to the Dovers, Elly could be Ellender, but that would mean she and Bailey married before 1807, and she would be around 17 in 1807. Bailey's will made in 1861 stated he and his wife were together 51 years, so if that's correct, then they married around 1810 (after census?). It is possible, however, that the 1807 list included folks who were members "around that time", rather than "just" in 1807. A John Dover sold 50 acres in Buncombe to Samuel Frisby in September 1807 (north side of unnamed river), and in October 1807, Abraham Dover purchased 40 acres from James Pierce in Buncombe (west side of French Broad). We don't know if they're the same person; however, we believe the John Dover on the 1810 Pendleton census was the same John Dover who appears in Buncombe in 1820. It is possible that a Dover was still in Buncombe but didn't show up on the census. The John Dover in Pendleton had two females in his household (excluding Alsey Dover who married William Edwards?), and they "could be" Patsy and Elly. At least we now have the names of two Dover females. Dennis, Do I remember something years ago about an anchor on display somewhere in New England that we thought had something to do with John Dover and Fall River?
Elly & Patsy Dover were members in 1807. The Ponder's were from York. Many of these families are familiar, some from the York area and Pendleton, SC. As a general location of the church (it's still there) ... Newfound Creek and Turkey Creek area where the Dover's lived. I have one idea on Elly Dover, but it can never be proved unless a marriage record is found. Bailey Dover of Rabun County, Georgia was in Buncombe in 1820 (married) with a male 16-25 in their household and left for Rabun after the census. Bailey said his wife Elley (Ellender) had been a member of the Baptist Church for 56 years when he wrote his will in 1861 (1805). This is everything that I have on John Dover born about 1793 in South Carolina/North Carolina that was the father of Bailey A. Dover born 1817 NC. All I had was a part of 1850 forward until ten years ago when Terry Jackson found a series of deeds in Alabama that proves that Bailey Dover was the son of John Dover. I cannot prove/prove anything before 1850. My DNA as a descendant of this John Dover now proves that my John Dover is also connected with the descendants of Francis J. Dover and I believe old Zephaniah Dover, both with roots in old York, SC before the American Revolution who both may have a parent or uncle in central North Carolina by 1750. That's a 100 year leap backwards for me with a lot of shadows for time, place and people in between. This is in chronological order working backwards. Genealogists with West Virginia Roots Score Big Time State puts free database of vital records online Salt Lake City, Utah-Thanks to the help of FamilySearch Archive (Genealogy Society of Utah), searching those elusive ancestors with West Virginian origins or connections may now be just a mouse click away. FamilySearch scanned and indexed the records and the West Virginia Division of Culture and History is hosting them online. The free database consists of millions of West Virginia births, deaths, and marriages-a goldmine for genealogists and historians. Researchers and curiosity seekers can now search and view scanned images of original birth, death, and marriage records from six counties, as well as most statewide death certificates from 1917-54 at www.wvculture.org/vrr <http://www.wvculture.org/vrr>. The database has over 3.5 million names linked to 1.4 million original images of birth, marriage, and death records from Calhoun, Gilmer, Hardy, Harrison, Mineral and Pendleton counties. The record dates vary by county and type of record, but typically range from 1816 to 1929. Birth records are for the period 1853-1930, county death records for 1853-1969/1970, and county marriage records from the creation of the county until the late 1960s, all of which are searchable by name, county, and date. FamilySearch filmed, scanned, and created the automatic index at the heart of the online database. Paul Nauta, manager of Public Affairs for FamilySearch said, "Birth, marriage, and death records together in a single database are particularly attractive to researchers because multiple generations of ancestors can be found on one document, and you can track their growth and whereabouts over time as noted by births, marriages, and deaths in the family." All users have to do is type in an ancestor's name to search the free database. They can also view a high quality, scanned image of the original document. The project required 2,500 volunteers and 64,000 hours to complete. West Virginia plans to add records from additional counties in the future.
Hi Sharon. Thanks for your hard work in research. I am interested in seeing more information of what you have on a couple of the names you have since all my Dover ancestry are from NC. I have the muster roll information on William--he is up my line as far as I have been able to find. There could be a couple of his kids who joined or were mustered in during the war. So, if wouldn't mind please send more information on William, William F., John, J. H., James and Andrew Dover unless you have them all packaged in one file then that would be find too to cross check some other possible relatives. I am soon getting to the age that I can retire and devote more time in this fascinating hobby and pass it all on to all my living relatives. I sent this the first time in rich text so am not sure it will go through. Thought I would try again. I am going to seperate what papers I have and post all they contain seperatly to the list by the way. ----- Original Message ----- From: Sharon Dover Romanek To: DOVER-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, November 14, 2005 6:27 PM Subject: NC Dover Civil War Records I have been working on something and thought I would post what I have to the list in case there are others interested in it. I am happy to scan and send copies to anyone on the list who wants it VIA e-mail. Just let me know what you want. What I have are copies of all records I found on the below. There were only two Dover pension records for the whole state. All of the rest were Muster Roll documents with exception of one hand written paper on Riley Dover that I have not yet been able to transcribe. It is in BAD shape so I am going to have to be creative, scan it, turn it to a negative and see if that helps me to be able to read it better. Source: NC Civil War Military Records Roll 315 Andrew E. Terry, I suspect you would have tried all of the options I might suggest, but here goes: Vester Hare died in 1981 in Scottsboro in Jackson County, AL. Did you check the property records to find out when he moved there? Perhaps his mother moved there with him. What about a remarriage for her? What about any property records for Vester or his mother in DeKalb County? Looks like they were renting earlier, but they might have purchased property after the 1930 census. Vester's WWI registration statement indicated he was living in Ffyfe, AL. I have some relatives buried at Antioch Cemetery in Ffyfe (1st cousin, once removed), so that's the only cemetery I'm familiar with in that area. In 1930, she was also listed as living at Corinth. Good luck.
