    3. Here's one part of Ernest's comments. Stephen Dover mentioned by Marcus Dover in the 1939 letter was the son of Francis Marion Dover and Mary Bailey. They were married in Rutherford Co., NC in 1830. Stephen is confirmed as a son in the will of Francis Marion Dover dated 1877. Stephen born 1837 GA (Gilmer/Pickens Co) Census 1840 Gilmer Co., GA 1850 Gilmer Co., GA 1860 Gilmer Co., GA 1870 Jackson, Jackson Co., IN 1880 Poplar Bluff, Butler Co., MO Apparently died before 1900 My Grandparents in Greene County, Arkansas took me on a trip to St. Louis many years ago. We stopped in Poplar Bluff to visit a Dover family that grandpa said were kin. To this day I have never found any of Grandpa's family that would have been in Poplar Bluff at that time and whoever they were they were not Grandpa's immediate family in Paragould. One of the girls at work years ago here in California was from Sikeston and knew Dover kids when she was growing up there. -----Original Message----- From: Earnest Dovers [mailto:edovers2@cox.net] Sent: Thursday, February 16, 2006 8:32 AM To: DOVER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Dover] Giles Dover/Missouri Pami thanks for all your hard work. 3. This is a transcription of a typewritten letter received from the files of the John Randolph Dover family of Cleveland County, North Carolina. Louisville, Kentucky, Oct. 18, 1939. Mr. Elmer Dover, 5941 Cote Brilliante Ave. St Louis, Mo. Dear Sir:- I was very much interested in receiving your letter and would be glad indeed if we together could patch up the tree of the Dover family and would like to get a copy of your History of it when completed. I am a son of Louis L. Dover who was born in Pickens Co. Georgia, Feb. 3, 1866, my grandfather was Augustus McDowell Dover, I do not know the date or place of his birth but think he was born in East Georgia or Vir. My Great grand father was born in England. My father (Louis L. Dover) died at Acworth, Georgia last Dec. 15, 1938, and was buried with his father and grand father and I do not remember whether my grand father was Ky Dover or Stephen Dover or (Steve) as they called him, either Ky or Steven Dover was my grandfathers brother and died some where in Mo. I think at Poplar Bluff, I do not know the date. About six months prior to my father's death he gave me some notes including the above which I have misplaced and am quoting from vague memory but will try to locate and give you more information later if possible. I regret that I am not in possession of any information regarding the members of the family you mention. I have been estranged from my family since age 15, my mother passed when I was five and I just grew up as did Topsy the stray pup and came to Louisville in the year 1910 and had little contact with my family until my father nearing the end called for me and I went to see him in February last year. I am a traveling salesman and have recently made a change in my connections which accounts for my inability at this time to collect both the family data that I should have and my own faculties. However, at the earliest opportunity I shall try to gather more information and if successful will gladly communicate it to you. Hoping that we may yet be able to trace more accurately the family tree and that you will be able to secure the necessary data to admit you to the Sons of the Revolution, I am, Your Cousin, Marcus A. Dover 3640 Longview Ave. Louisville, Ky. P. S. Several years ago or about 1935 I received a card from "Fudge & Co. Ltd. 94 York Road, London, S.E. England suggesting that I order a copy of the Summer 1935 number of "The Genealogical Quarterly" which contained information regarding the Dover family, price $1.50, I regret that I did not order this.

    3. There's at least one more letter and possibly two that have been shared with me in the past that involve contact with this family. One was written in 1939 from Marcus Dover in Kentucky to Elmer Dover in St. Louis that left some stunning clues about his family ancestors. The letter from Marcus was found and shared by one of the Cleveland County, North Carolina Dover families. No one knew then how or if they connected with each other, but that's now more known. It's just so important that list members share whatever they know even if it's just questions about their own family. That's what Dover-L is all about. I'm waiting for the day one or more of those old Dover families up in the northern US match up with the ones in the south who never left or went very far. St. Louis. Mo. June 4, 1944 Giles L. Dover 230 Park Avenue, New York, N.Y. Dear Cousin Giles: So glad you called me up while you were here and was sorry to have missed seeing you. I'm sending you a few notes of our immediate family, and a few references where you can find more records of same. Hope you can have someone look into the Washington Records because the answer to all of our questions is in those schedules of 1810. Please show this letter to your English Dover Cousin and ask him to please write to me and give me the names of all the Dovers he knows, and who was the Dover that he heard of who came to America because there were many Dovers. Tell him that the 1935 number of the "Genealogical Quarterly" published by Fudge & Co. Ltd., 94 York Road, South East London, England, contains an account of all the English Dovers and the price is $1.50 in American money, and if he can get a copy for me I will be glad to pay him for same and that I would like to know the names of the Rev. Thomas Stevens parents, and the family name of his wife, Juda - they lived in Great Missingdon Bucks, England 1775, and came to Louisville, Ky. In 1800. He was my Grandfather and a Baptist Minister and was sent to America as a Missionary to the Indians and was the 3rd Pastor of Bethel Baptist Church, Jackson, Mo., 1st permanent Baptist Church West of the Mississippi River. "Cavaliers and Pioneers" Abstracts of Land Patents and Grants of Virginia from 1623 to 1800 (5 volumes) by Niel Marian Nugent, is a very important reference if you can find it. Inquire of the Washington Library and Philadelphia Penn. Please let me know what your son finds out and answer soon. Sincerely, Yours Cousin, Elmer Dover John Dover, my Grandfather, was born on December 4, 1789, perhaps in Western New Jersey or Ohio; his brothers were Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Hiram, Daniel and one sister, Sarah Dover, who married a Hill. Jacob Dover was a seaman and sailed a ship to the Barbadoes. Daniel Dover lived in Ohio and is buried near Zanesville. Abraham Dover married Sarah, and lived in a few blocks of his brother John Dover in Louisville, Ky. In 1820, Isaac Dover in New Orleans died there during the Yellow Fever plague and his son, Isaac Dover, mover to New Jersey and died there. John Dover was an M.D., but did not practice because his wife was afraid to be left alone because of the Indians. He was a potter by trade and ran a pottery in Louisville from about 1815 to 1826, when he moved to Washington, Ind., and from there to St. Genevieve, Mo. In 1840, and from there to a farm on Old Ditch Creek near Ingal's Ford in 1844 Big River in Jeff. Co. Mo. where he died of pneumonia caused by being thrown from a horse about October 14, 1857, buried in Bethlehem, Mo. John Dover was married to Miss Jemima Stevens, daughter of the Rev. Thomas Stevens at the home of her sister Susan Stevens Lee, wife of Wm. P. Lee at Louisville, Ky. On December 9, 1817 by Rev. David Chapman Banks. She was born in Great Missington, Bucks, England in 1791 and came to Louisville when nine years old. Her sister, Lydia Stevens, born in England, was married at the home of here sister Susan Lee on the evening of December 24, 1812 to Edwin Brewster, the artist, who was born in Deerfield, W. New Jersey, Cumberland Co., August 28, 1793. She was born April 27, 1792. The Brewsters became acquainted with the Dovers at Deerfield, New Jersey and the Dovers of that generation made their fortune by selling cranberries from the White Marsh and several Dovers married into the White family and there were several Dover men living at Deerfield - one of which must have been our Great-Great-Grandfather. If you could go to Washington and look at the Census schedules of Cumberland Co., New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Carolina and New York of the 1810 census, you would have no trouble finding our Grand parents names, as all of the children's names are given in the schedules. Mary Stevens, youngest daughter of Rev. Thomas Stevens and Juda Stevens, born in England, was married to Gen. O.O. Howard and had a daughter Laura B. Howard, who married Ensing Otis, a Diplomat, and they obit in Spain. My Grandfather, John Dover, was raised in the Abraham Lodge No. 9, A.F. & A.M. in Louisville, Ky. In 1819. John and Jemima (Stevens) Dover had Oscar, born Louisville, June 1, 1820, who married Amanda Dover, born November 10, 1823 married Alexander Ziegler. John Dover moved with his family to Washington, Ind. In about 1825 and his son Jerome bonaparte Dover was born there November 21, 1826, who married Margaret Lucus. Died: At the residence of Captain Alexander Ziegler at Pevely, Mo. on Tuesday the 13th inst. Of consumption, Napoleon Bonapart Dover aged 43 years. California and Mont. Papers please copy. "God Calleth his chosen Ones". The date of this notice is not given but it must have been 1870 because he went to California in the 1849 Gold Rush and when his younger brother Leroy went to California in the sixties, he found his brother sick out West and nursed him until he was able to travel and lent him the money to come home and he visited my father, Bonaparte Dover in 1870. He never married and died soon afterward. Aleviana Dover, born Wash. Co. Ind. In 1829 was married near Ware, Jeff. Co., to Henry Kertz. Bonaparte Dover, son of John and Jemima (Stevens) Dover was born in Wash. Co., Ind. October 11, 1831 and came to St. Genevieve, Mo. in 1840 and was a Steam Boat Clerk until about 1850 when he came to Jeff. Co., Mo. He was married to Nancy Jane Lollar at her home at Grubville, Mo by the Rev. "Billy" McKay on Their children were, John Albert, obit Mont. Mary Belle (Dover) Stegmann, widow of Charles A. Stegmann, Minnie Alexiana Dover, who never married, Leroy Bonaparte Dover married Madge Curtis and Elmer Dover who married Clara D. Richardson, no children. Leroy Dover, son of John was born in Wash. Co., Ind. January 10, 1838 married Margaretta Frances Manion October 29, 1874. Obit January 3, 1913. His wife, Frances (Manion) Dover obit August 19, 1936. Angeline Dover, youngest daughter of John Dover married Eldredge Boli and had on son, Elec Boli, and she died in December 1857 and was buried by her oun request under a large cedar tree on a hill on the old road between Vineland and Blackwell. Her husband went to Mont. And later sent for his son Elec, who was being raised by his Uncle Leroy and Elec Boli was drowned in the Yellow Stone River in about 1872 while helping his father drive some cattle across the river. -----Original Message----- From: Pami54@aol.com [mailto:Pami54@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, February 16, 2006 7:27 AM To: DOVER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Dover] Giles Dover/Missouri Sikeston Herald Sikeston, Missouri March 28, 1935 Giles Dover and son Jack, of New York, will be here Saturday for a brief visit with the former's parents, Mr.and Mrs. J. 3. Folks, This is something that really frustrates me. We know there are folks out in the cob webs of the list. But to be honest, we can't help if we don't know what you're looking for. John just happened to hit it lucky because I'm sure Pam was posting little snippets of information she'd come across. There's not much purpose of ferreting out information on Dover families in South Dakota at this time if no one on our current list is connected to South Dakota. Now, if we have a dozen members connected to Colorado, that's a different story. But we need to know where our efforts are needed. My point is, we'd like to hear from you. We'd like to hear your horror stories of research experiences. We'd like to hear your success stories. What resources have you used to get you to the point you're at? What documents do you have passed down from Grandma that helped prove Aunt Suzie and Uncle Dick were married in the burned courthouse county? OK, I'm off my soap box for now. 3. The DNA is challenging for anyone except rocket scientists. I haven't looked at these markers yet but will comment on what I have read and what I was told in a couple of conversations with the DNA people. It's only the male Y chromosome that passes down to males within the surname. There are two exceptions with unrelated surnames. The Harris you mention could have been a Dover son that was adopted by a family. The other exception is an oops by a male Dover (not female) where the son did not take the Dover name. There are many people with other surnames that are coming close to matching some of the Dover's. Even so, they don't all connect. The key there is that they can be off, if they were a Dover, in only the DNA markers that can change (only several), not the hard markers that can't move over the generations. Time and place is a key in figuring out that kind of coincidence. Both David and I were not originally in the current group of connections. That was a scientific generation issue. As soon as more results came out it became obvious to the DNA people that "we" as a group tend to move in the movable markers. That's about the time that Max Dover's results pulled the whole thing together which resulted in "our" genetic footprint ... the one common ancestor which now predates both Zephaniah and Francis J. Dover (mid 1700's). For the list members who have wondered about the DNA tests it's the smartest thing you can ever do to find a male in your Dover family to take the DNA test ... 25 or 37 marker. DNA is very accurate, but what goes equally with it is the proven paper trail. I will use myself as an example. I can't prove/prove anything (100 percent) before 1850 and probably 1840. I know now that all I have to do is follow Francis J. Dover and Zephaniah Dover because of their proven facts. It got to the point with my results that not knowing anything more than I do for hard facts that either Francis J. Dover (1760) or Hezekiah Dover (abt 1764)(proven brothers) could have been the father of my John Dover b. abt. 1793. The markers were close enough for that in the overall ancestral footprint. The other couple of things that come out of the DNA are where your genetic origins were before the families came to America (if you have family here) and a scientific guess at how many generations you go back to with other living males. My Grandpa was convinced that we were German and not English/Scots/Irish. Grandpa was wrong :-( The generation separation was the big shock to the DNA people ... how few generations connect both the living descendants of Francis J. Dover and old Zeph. One of the other benefits of DNA is that the test results will do the same for you as it did for me, disprove other research theories. There have been some major surprises so far. What I'm saying is that you have a major advantage by taking the DNA tests even with little information so far on your ancestors. Your results would likely tie into others for which there is a proven paper trail to point you in the right direction for time and place. It's a win/win. At the same time there are seven or eight totally different Dover families in the Dover DNA results. Only one has a proven connection so far with both England and the US. For those interested, go to this link and type in Dover. http://www.familytreedna.com/default.asp http://www.dovertree.com/pages/5/index.htm -----Original Message----- From: Terry Jackson [mailto:jacksont@otelco.net] Sent: Monday, February 13, 2006 8:16 PM To: DOVER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Dover] Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation Dennis, I saw a reference to this site on another list today. http://www.smgf.org I keyed in David L.
