I was given your email address by JGS1127 who told me you might be able to provide some information for me. My grandfather's name was Dorman Dover, (I have no middle name) he married Vivian Bussell in OK, they lived for a short time in Kansas, and eventually settled in San Francisco CA. They had 2 children, born in Kansas Lois and Larry. My grandfather was also apparently a bigamist, and had another family in WA. This is all the information I have. I don't even know if he had any brothers or sisters. Any information you can provide, regarding the orgin of the last name, or most especially my grandfather would be greatly appreciated. Thank You Neoma Neely (Dover) --------- End forwarded message ---------- ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Here's a whole new twist on the spelling of a possible DOVER family. Sounds French. Follow down till you get to Hiram JAY in 1840. Then look at Hiram JAY below that in 1850 Abbeyville County, South Carolina which is next door to Edgefield County (census page numbers follow the names). Where did these people go? I did look at the census showing Michey DOVER and I recall is shows DOVER. Whether I like it or not, I'm sure there are other surnames in these two counties that would surprise many of us on the list ... HARDIN, POSEY, SAVAGE, CLOUD (many), MOSS. PARTAN is a connecting family (somehow). The HARDIN is an Elijah who appears to be a neighbor in 1850 Tallapoosa County, Alabama who several think came from the Hardin bunch in Lincoln/Rutherford .... Going thru some WFT and noticed some interesting times and places. Mary HAMBRIGHT b 1784 in York, the daughter of Fred & Mary DOVER Hambright, died in Marshall County, Alabama in 1870. She was married to Rice/Reese PRICE in 1805 Marshall Co., AL, he the son of Thomas PRICE & Isabella SHARP. They had a son Samuel C. PRICE b 1825 Jackson Co., AL now Marshall Co., AL. These counties are in northeast Alabama. A lot of us on the list have connections in this part of Alabama. Wonder if Mary Hambright knew Joshua DOVER who was in Jackson County ... kin or strangers. Would be hard to imagine everyone didn't pretty much know everyone else for many miles around back then.
Dennis, I believe this is the same Price family that married into my Mother's Warrens. They were in Jackson Co. Al as well, and north Alabama. The thing that always hammers in my head, is that my Daddy always said that his family was from a John Dover. He had heard stories about the name having been German, and changed to be more British, or something. I don't know about that, but I do know of the Alabama connections, Georgia and SC. that would match up. .......g. -----Original Message----- From: Dennis Dover <ddover@earthlink.net> To: DOVER-L@rootsweb.com <DOVER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, January 31, 1999 12:07 AM Subject: [DOVER-L] Mary Hambright/dau of Mary DOVER >Going thru some WFT and noticed some interesting times and >places. Dennis, it amazes me how the names for SC keep popping up in Indiana. First my Joshua Dover born 1790's, Zephania, Archibold, Greenberry, James, John, and now Hiram. Hiram Dover b. 1833 died 1862 of Disease in Civil War. His parents were Abraham and Rebecca Dover as they appear in the 1860 Orange Co, IN Census. Too simple right? :)pam
JOHN DOVER was born abt. 1793 in SC, and died Abt. 1879. This John DOVER "thought" to have been born in Pendleton, SC and moved with parents to Buncombe, NC by 1820. It's possible that this is the John DOVER who sold to Jeptha DOVER in Buncombe. John is "thought" to have been in Cherokee County, Georgia 1836-1842. The children of John DOVER below come from the age groupings in the 1840 Cherokee County, Georgia census AND 1830 Buncombe County, North Carolina. If so, son #1 would have been a head of household in 1840. There's only one name left by census (no other supporting records or clues) on a short list of possibles .... William Dover who married Altantha CHAMBERS. John DOVER was in Randolph County, Alabama in 1850. Son Bailey was in Coosa County, Alabama in 1850. Children of JOHN DOVER are: i. SON, b. Bet. 1815 - 1820, NC. ii. BAILEY APPLETON DOVER, b. 1817, Buncombe Co., NC; d. April 24, 1890, Greene Co., AR; m. MARTHA ANN FIELDING, Abt. 1840 iii. DAUGHTER, b. Bet. 1820 - 1825, NC. iv. SON, b. Bet. 1825 - 1830. v. LUCINDA DOVER, b. 1829, NC; m. (1) ASA (?) ORR; m. (2) COOPER BENNETT. vi. LEMUEL B. DOVER, b. 1832, NC; d. Bef. 1880; m. CLEMENTINE. Lemuel & Clementine DOVER left Alabama abt. 1858 and went to Mississippi with a group of families from Tallapoosa County, Alabama .... MADDEN, NELSON, ANDREWS, SHARP. Generation #1: John DOVER b abt 1793 SC d by 1879 Madison or Jackson Co., AL. Wife unknown, but John was widowed or divorced after 1840 and by 1850. Probably in Cherokee Co., GA 1840. Was in Randolph Co., AL in 1850 (this census says he was b 1799 NC) with Lemuel and Lucinda at home. Living with daughter Lucinda DOVER ORR BENNETT in 1870 Madison Co., AL (Cooper BENNETT). Generation #2: Bailey Appleton DOVER b 1817 NC d 1890 Greene Co., AR. Wife Martha Ann "Patsy" FIELDING b 1822 GA d abt 1886 Greene Co., AR. Family was in Coosa Co., AL in 1850 and Blount Co., AL 1860+. Was in Poinsett Co., AR 1870 before moving to Greene Co., AR by 1880. Generation #3: Andrew L. DOVER b 1847 GA/AL d 1896 Greene Co., AR. Wife Tennessee Virgina YATES b 1860 TN d 1929 Greene Co., AR. Andrew died from a snake bite.

Services will be Wed at 11 am at the Dodds Ave Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with Rev. Mark McGuire officiating. Burial will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.
gaelcee, You might be thinking of Thomas? Glynn County, Georgia, July 10, 1825 Thomas Dover gave 10 slaves and 2200 acres of land to Catherine, wife of Charles E. Flynn in consideration "of her good wishes and friendship."
Part of the John Dover confusion. Is the John in Pickens (NW So. Carolina) the same one in 1830 Anderson County next door? Pickens and Anderson counties (districts) were really part of early Pendleton. Others have speculated that the John Dover in 1830 Anderson County, South Carolina is the same one in 1840 Carroll County, Georgia (ages do seem to match). Joshua Dover has been speculated as a possible father of John because Josh was nearby in 1790 Greenville County, SC (census). Pickens County, South Carolina, September 1, 1808 Brother John Dover is out of fellowship of the church until he clears himself of the charge laid to him by Patience Young. January 1810 Church met and excluded Brother John Dover for committing a fraud and telling a lie. July 1829 Restored John Dover to fellowship and gave him a letter of dismissal. 1830 Anderson M19-173 Page 175 John Dover 40-50 1780-1790 2010001-111001 Female 30-40 1790-1800 Male 10-15 1815-1820 Female 10-15 1815-1820 Female 05-10 1820-1825 Male -5 1825-1830 Male -5 1825-1830 Female -5 1825-1830
I would like to let the list know that Lowell Dover died today. Lowell was the son of Wyatt, son of Alfred Frank, son of William Alfred, son of Anderson, son of Francis J. That would make him a cousin to me and Sharon Romanek. Randy Dover P.S. I spoke with Gayla Dover Skender today. She's one of the cousins that I just got in contact with this month. ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Dennis, all the information I have so far, says that John T. is the son of Thomas P. Setliff/Sutliff. In 1850 Thomas and wife Margaret were in Murray County, Georgia. I think that Margaret was a Stafford and they were married in Surry Co. NC in 1845. In 1860 they were in Whitfield County, with John T. b. 1851. John T. married Nora Ophelia Dover in 1871 in Dalton, Whitfield Co. Georgia. In the 1880 census, they were in the Dalton Census and his occupation is listed as Rail Road Worker. I have been looking for information on the Forrest Dover who died in the mining accident in Alabama. I think that Nora O. is going to be part of that family. Because she named one of her sons Forrest, and another Frederick. Thought this was of interest and worth posting. I had a free headstone placed on my gg grandfather's unmarked in Jefferson Co., AL a few years ago. Rosemary Nichols Hollis ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Government Provides Free Headstones to Any Veteran ASSOCIATED PRESS A polished new headstone stands by two worn markers in a tiny private cemetery in Tennessee, a tribute to the man whose gravesite it marks and a federal program that tries to ensure that no veteran's grave goes unmarked. John Alford was a Revolutionary War veteran from Virginia who died in Nashville on April.24,1837. Though he served in the military more than 200 years ago, his family still was eligible for a government headstone through the National Cernetery System, the section of the Department of Veterans Affairs that maintains 115 national cemeteries. Steven Westerfeld, a spokesman for the system, said a gravestone can be the most significant benefit a veteran receives."These are people who fought for our country and we owe a great debt of gratitude for that and it behooves us to make sure that they are not forgotten." Westerfeld said. The VA provided about 270,000 headstones last year. Though most of the markers go to recently deceased veterans, the tombstone and marker project also provides stones to replace those that have been lost, damaged or destroyed. Jane Alford found John Alford's stone was crumbling when her genealogy research led her to the tiny cemetery on the lawn of a historic home on the outskirts of Nashville. John Alford, her husband's great-great-great-great-greatgrandfather, joined the Army in Virginia and guarded British prisoners of war. While researching his background, Jane Alford learned about the headstone program,.which requires documentation of a veteran's service. It takes about a year for a headstone, valued at about $350, to be carved and shipped. Families may choose either granite or marbIe headstones, or a brass marker. And the headstone or marker may be upright or flat. To apply for a headstone, contact Memorial Programs Services at (800) 697-6947. NORTH COUNTY TIMES JANUARY 10, 1999
