I know some of these are duplicate post, because the names show up from other post, but I just blew myself out of the water on this one. Nancy Dover is the daughter of Henry Anderson Dover and America Tennessee Shrader my great grandparents, and also the sister of m grandpa John Franklin Dover. I did not have this record. I knew one of their sons when I was younger. He rented our house in Chattanooga after we moved to N.C. I must be lucky this week. This is the 2nd marriage from within my lines that I have been lucky enough to find. Both of them were in Walker County, which I was told was a popular area to go to get married. I am not sure why that is, but it does seem to be so in my family in most of the lines. Nothing remains of the site now except the cemetery where a number of the community's earliest settlers are buried. This information taken from the historical information provided by Anita Summers for Gates Chapel United Methodist Church. Directions to cemetery: >From Ellijay, Gilmer Co. Georgia, take Ga. 52 (Chatsworth Hwy) west approximately Four miles to Gates Chapel Road on the right. Travel approximately 2 1/2 miles to a small narrow drive that angles off to the right. The following was copied from the original in the Mass. Archives, Vol. 136, pp.270-280 titled "Petition of the inhabitants of Kennebec River fro Protection." There are over 400 names, and the transposer admits to "taking liberties." This deals with the number of settlers there making improvements while having to handle hostilities with the French and the Indians. Because of their "weak state' and have a "defenceless condition" against them. They are seeking protection for their safety. It is signed April 22, 1755. Among the names is a Jacob Duer, just under an Alexander Campbell Jr..A dozen or so names Above theirs, are the names John Goodwin, and Samuel Goodwin. There is also a Miles Goodwin, and Alexander Campbell.[Sr.] Since I have been working along the Campbell- Youngblood- Dover connection lately, I wanted to point out that what I would think to be the German, " Jungblut " is used as an alternate to Youngblood on the Roots Web. Considering the possible German origins of many Dovers, and the known Dover-Youngblood connection, it seemed to hit a note.......g. { oh, by the way, in my previous post had several typos- one should have been Crusoe, even though I'm sure everybody knew who I meant.}
>From the DAR Magazine, April, 1964 , perhaps I found the " Dr. Dover who invented some drug that is still used today" according to the family legends. The article- "The Buccaneer Physicians" is too long to transpose and also deals with other men. According to the article which incidentally lists sources for more checking, it seems that during the time of the England/France/Spain struggle over the Colonies, that looting of one another's ships was common, respectable and often sanctioned by the "Crown." Making ones fortune with such approval was very acceptable. Out of this tumultuous time, a revolution in medicine was coming about in England. It wa the pirate-surgeons who greatly influenced the changes. Dover was one of these who became interested in the herbs and remedies used by the natives to cure illness. One of the drugs, IPECAC, was introduced into Europe around 1708 by Thomas Dover. He had practiced medicine in Bristol, England when he decided to go into pirating. He sailed in joint-command with Woodes Rogers in the Duke and Duchess, two ships that were financed by the merchants of Bristol. During one of their voyages they rescued Alexander Selkirk from an island off Chile. Alexander Selkirk became known in literature as "Robinson Crusue!" The article tells of other places and adventures. The conclusion is that Dr. Dover returned to England with an estimated booty of a million pounds sterling. [about $2million today, so imagine then!!!] At that point he gave up "piracy" and put out his remedy, "Dover's Powders," containing Ipecac and opium as the active ingredients. [From the Bulletin, University of Miami School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Hospital, Vol. 17, April-June, 1963.PP.49-52.] Other pirate physicians finish out the article...........gaelcee
The following is taken from the NEHG Register, Vol. 15, April 1861. Because people were still using "old English " manuscript cursive it is very easy to understand that DOVES may well have been DOVER. DOVES. Zecharia ye sonne of Samuell Doves and of Sarah his wife borne 21 July 59. (1759) This was really interesting with all of our confusion about Zechariah/ Hezikiah, etc.
And, S.N.Dover is Sarah Mealer Dover, the widow of Samuel M. Dover, son of Thomas C. Dover. J.M. Witt is her 2nd husband and the stepfather who raised my grandfather Oscar Samuel Dover. There are alot of mistakes in the Walker Co. Records, transposing from the cursive. They copied her maiden name as Melik or something like that when she married Samuel M. Dover. .......gaelcee -----Original Message----- From: S.Romanek <romanek@cybertrails.com> To: DOVER-L@rootsweb.com <DOVER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, February 12, 1999 5:16 AM Subject: [DOVER-L] Walker County Marriages 1882-1920 Groom Index >I know some of these are duplicate post, because the names >show up from other post, but I just blew myself out of the >water on this one.
