    1. [DOVER-L] My Dover Family!
    2. Just information of a different kind! This afternoon I had the pleasure to spend some time with one of my cousins that I met on line and I don't think that I have ever met anyone as nice or pleasant to be with (Gayla and Jim her husband). We had lunch and then drove to her Grandparents (my Aunt & Uncle) graves and spent some time reliving our memories of them.............It was great! We then visited their old homestead and actually found the house that they lived in last.......Thanks to both of you and I would encourage others to try this with relatives........I can't wait to meet the rest of my on line relatives............ 1. [DOVER-L] John Abel Dover
    2. John Abel Dover is my great grandfather. He is the son of David Dover and Sarah Sparks. John Abel Dover, b. 15 May 1844 in Talladega Co, AL, served in Co A 7th AL Cav, CSA. He entered 25 May 1863 in Randolph Co, AL for duration of the war. He was captured on the Pensacola Road, four miles from the Big Bayou, by Capt Schmidt, Co M, 14th NY Cav; he was transported to Ft Pickens, FL, then transported to New Orleans abt 10 Apr 1864, transferred to Ship Island, MS on 5 Oct 1864, then transferred to Elmira, NY on 19 Nov 1864 where he was imprisoned. He was released from captivity on 14 Jun 1865 and returned home. Married Martha Emily Shaddix on 26 Aug 1865 in Talladega Co, AL (later to become Clay Co). In 1870 he is shown on the Winston Co, AL census along with his father David Dover and brother David Dover. On the 1880 census, he is shown back in Clay Co, AL. Martha Emily died 5 Jul 1885 in Clay Co, and John Abel died about 1919 (He has a CSA tombstone, no dates), and both are buried at Union Baptist Church, Clay Co, AL. Children: 1. Marion Sherman Cicero, b. abt 1866, in Winston or Clay Co., m. Florence Josephine Strickland 7 Dec 1884 in Clay Co, AL, d. 1943, and buried in Munford Cemetery, Munford, AL. Josephine is buried beside him. They are in unmarked graves beside their daughter who married a Nowland. He was always known as "Sherman". There are some of his descendants who give his b.d. as 1864, but I believe it's wrong. The census doesn't support that date, nor the marriage date of John & Martha. The 1870 census has a "Mark T" listed as 3 yrs old, and I believe that is Sherman. Perhaps they called him Mark earlier in his childhood. 2. John J., b. abt 1868 in Winston or Clay Co, AL. No other info. May be the one who went to Texas and died there per my Aunt. 3. David Henry T (Thornton?), b. Jan 1870 in Winston or Clay Co, m. Viola Turner 24 nov 1887 in Clay Co. They moved to Cairo, GA after 1910 (acc to my Aunt). He was always known as "Henry". 4. Sarah Ann "Sally", b. 5 Jan 1872, probably Winston Co, AL, m. 25 Feb 1886 to Thomas Jefferson "Tom" Turner, d. 29 Sep 1950 in Clay Co, buried in Union Baptist Church Cem. Tom Turner b. 2 Feb 1862, d. 14 Aug 1944 and is buried at Union Baptist also, beside S. B. Turner (b. 10 mar 1830 d. 13 Jul 1894) and E. R. Turner (b. 20 Jun 1838 d. 22 Oct 1912). They are probably his parents since they are in the same plot. 5. William Robert Earl, b. abt 1874 in Winston or Clay Co. Never married. He moved after 1920 to Jackson Co, AL and is buried at New Caanan Baptist Church ( I don't have a date). 6. Tolbert Sparks, b. 29 Jun 1876 - see particulars in previous message. (My grandfather) 7. Mary "Molly", b. Jun 1878, Winston or Clay Co. Married and Armstrong. 8. Arch R., b. Oct 1880 probably Clay Co, m. Mary Maude Bean in Texas, returned to Clay Co, AL, eventually to the area called Sand Mountain, and is buried in Jackson Co, at New Caanan Baptist Church (No dates). 9. George W, b. 11 Nov 1883, Clay Co, m. Missouri J. Catherine Parker abt 1916 in Clay Co, d. 20 Sep 1961 in Talladega Co, AL, buried at Union Baptist Church, Clay Co. Wife Catherine, b. 26 Nov 1894, d. 20 Dec 1981, buried at Union also. John Abel m. 2nd time to Mary E Clifton on 14 Feb 1886 in Clay Co. One child, Thomas F Dover, b. Sep 1887, Clay Co, m. Gracy Estella Sassnet abt 1906/07. Mary died 18 Feb 1915, and is buried at Union Baptist Church. Sherry Worthy Horn

    1. [DOVER-L] This has nothing to do with genealogy but is a great poem!
    2. Dance Like No One's Watching We convince ourselves that life will be better After we get married, Have a baby, then another. Then we are frustrated that The kids aren't old enough and We'll be more content when they are. After that we're frustrated that We have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they They are out of that stage. We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when Our spouse gets his or her act together, When we get a nice car, Are able to go on a nice vacation, When we retire. The truth is, There's no better time to be happy than right now. If not now, when? Your life will always be filled with challenges. It's best to admit this to yourself and decide to be Happy anyway. One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred D. Souza. He said, "For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, Something to be gotten through first, Some unfinished business, Time still to be served, A debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that These obstacles were my life" This perspective has helped me to see that There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have. And treasure it more because you share it With someone special, Special enough to spend your time… And remember that time waits for no one… So stop waiting until you finish school, Until you go back to school, Until you lose ten pounds, Until you gain ten pounds, Until you have kids, Until your kids leave the house, Until you start work, Until you retire, Until you get married, Until you get divorced, Until Friday night, Until Sunday morning, Until your car or home gets paid off, Until Spring, until Summer, Until Fall, until Winter, Until you are off welfare, Until the first or fifteenth, Until your song comes on, Until you've had a drink, Until you've sobered up, Until you die To decide that there is no better time Than right now to be happy… Happiness is a journey, not a destination… Thought for the day: Work like you don't need money, Love like you've never been hurt, And dance like no one is watching

    3. http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/data/ar+ind ex+75644674646+F Greene County part two page 174 G. W. Stevenson has attained wealth as a planter and stock raiser by honest labor, and is a gentleman who commands the respect and esteem of all who know him. He was born in the year 1831, in Giles County, Tenn., and is the youngest [p.174] in a family of ten children born to Elem and Lydia (Payne) Stevenson, both natives of the “Old North State.” They were married there and at an early day moved to Tennessee, locating in Giles County, where the father opened up quite an extensive farm and was a large slaveholder. He died in 1876 at the age of ninety-one years, having been a minister of the gospel for sixty-seven years, being the oldest one in Middle Tennessee at the time of his death. His wife died in 1874 at the age of eighty-nine years. The paternal grandfather was born in Ireland, and was one of the early settlers of North Carolina, and a soldier in the Revolutionary War. The maternal grandfather, also born in the Emerald Isle, was an early resident of North Carolina, and was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. G. W. Stevenson was reared to manhood in Middle Tennessee, and received his education in Forest Hill Academy, and Giles College, at Pulaski. At the age of twenty-one years he began teaching school, and has followed this occupation very successfully up to the present time, being also engaged in tilling the soil and raising stock. He was married in Lincoln County, Tenn., May 29, 1855, to Miss M. J. Thorp, who was born in that county, and is a daughter of Joel and Elizabeth (Osborne) Thorp, who were also Tennesseeans. The father was a wealthy planter and died in 1847, still survived by the mother. In 1861 Mr. Stevenson enlisted in Company A, Eleventh Tennessee Cavalry, and was mustered into service at Nashville, afterward participating in the battles of Corinth, Iuka, Chickamauga, and others of minor importance. He served as a scout for some time, and after the war returned to Tennessee, emigrating in 1884 to Greene County, Ark., where he is now residing on a farm of 200 acres, 123 of which are under cultivation. He is interested in buying, selling and raising stock. He is a stanch Democrat in politics, and was elected by that party to the office of county treasurer, and also to the office of justice of the peace. Socially he belongs to the I. O. O. F., Paragould Lodge No. 13, of which order he has been a member for over forty years, having passed all the chairs, and was grand lecturer of West Tennessee. He is chaplain in the A. F. & A. M., and also belongs to the Center Hill Wheel. He and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and are the parents of eight children, five of whom are living: Margaret Alice (Mrs. Huckabay), Louisa A. (Mrs. Dover). William Ernest, Ulpian Baker and Mollie Ann Barter. Mr. Stevenson has been identified with the county's interests for many years, and has always been an advocate of churches, schools and temperance. He was the first examiner of Greene County. ============================================== Sharon DOVER Romanek Prescott, Az Researching: KIRKSEY, DOVER, TYNER, SHRADER, EDGE, WILLIAMS romanek@cybertrails.com Sept. 30-May 15 romanek@salisbury.net May 30-Sept 15 sromanek@hotmail.com Year Round Back-Up only
