Diane and all, Somewhere on the internet was a site for the National Archives or Smithsonian mapping "dept." It's either moved or I just can't currently find it, but it has the greatest hand drawn maps of the early colonies on through the years. The craftsmanship of the drawings is something to see. I have a couple of the maps that I downloaded, but they are so big on the hard disk that it wouldn't be worth the time to attach them. The maps use place names we wouldn't recognize today. The three maps that I have are 1739, 1765 and 1839.
I was told some time back that if you give the source for your information, that it's OK. I'm no lawyer, but it sounds plausible, since people are copying information daily from the internet. If you attempt to pass it off as yours, it will cause trouble. Legally, though, I don't know where we stand. Diane

There's a list of books about CSA veterans which you can access by going to: http://www.hartcom.net/~scv935/grey/ The books listed by the author cover the Georgia counties of Habersham, Stephens, Franklin, Rabun and White. DOVER is listed in all except Franklin County. See lots of allied names in Habersham. When you get to the web site, choose the county and then scroll down until you see the surname index button. The books are for sale and I have no idea what the contents will provide in the way of information.
Hi everyone - I have been getting so many leads and ideas and notes and... well, you name it, that I'm going crazy trying to follow up on them all. And I wondered if anyone had ever thought of doing a timeline. If we started with the most distant known Dover and added everything that we have accumulated, perhaps we could see a pattern. At this point, I have pretty much excluded information from other lines as I'm innundated with dates and names and places and ????? that either pertain directly or just closely. Maybe this is more than anyone has time or inclination to do, but I saw such a timeline on another list that I correspond with. Yes it was long, but WOW. Looking forward to some ideas from all you dedicated researchers. Diane

One thing I have always thought interesting is the Archibold name. When I located a cousin last year she told me one of the Dover men, I believe it was her father was Archie Anderson Dover, but went by the nickname of "Bold". Wonder what significance that has? Anyone got any ideas? There is an image online for the manuscript which shows the Campbell family. Only Michael shows in 1812 but no image of the muster roll. There's no current web site for 1812 SC records ... probably won't take long before it shows up. David Hanson Campbell and Eliza V. (?) Dover or Dever were married Feb. 16th, 1869.

RE the question about what the land lotteries were....I'm not real sure either, but will try to do some research to find out. However, I did learn from a quick internet search that the counties changed a lot, apparently in regards to the lotteries. The two mentioned for Frances J.- Troup and Muscogee split to form other counties, such as Harris County in Dec. 1827. These counties are down on the GA/AL border. I also found an interesting web site about the 1832 lottery, which explains (at least for that one) criteria used etc....it's http://www.sos.state.ga.us/Archives/rs/1832.htm Might help someone found an ancestor or at least more clues to the counties, also by the number of draws etc. something about him, such as married or single...Janelle

Hi all - I've been following with interest, all the speculation about who was where and when. I have a copy of the NGS map (Territorial Growth of US) which was drawn in 1784 after the Treaty of Paris. It shows the US as it was then and it's really interesting. Virginia, NC, SC, GA, and Florida all extended their western boundaries to the Mississippi River. Does anyone know if there is a map that parallels the census? Did the US do a map every 10 years? I would think that knowing the progressive changes of states and counties would be important. I'm sure that info must be available somewhere, but does someone know when those states took on their present size and shape? One of my GGGrandfathers was born in NC, either Rutherford, Rowan or ???. Where were those counties in 1819? In the census, he said he was born in NC. But was it the same state we know today as NC? FJD said he was born on Haw River in 1760, but that river isn't listed on this map. I'm open to suggestions. Diane
