In looking thru the 1850 census I found Dovers from the following counties (l'll just put head of household, age, and place of birth. Interesting. But I still can't locate my Joshua who was married to Nancy McFarland in Greene Co. Remember Malinda Dover who married William Robert Jehu PONDER in Gordon Co., GA abt. 1848? She died in child birth and her father was a Baptist minister. As I understand the PONDER family so far, John Pierson Ponder who died in Randolph County, Alabama was born 1818 in Lincoln Co., NC, the son of Jehu John Ponder and Elizabeth Pierson b 1792 Lincoln Co., NC, she the daughter of John PIERSON & Mary COLLINS. John Pierson Ponder was a brother to William Robert Jehu Ponder b August 18, 1830 in Lincoln County, North Carolina who was first married to Malinda DOVER abt. 1848 in Gordon County, Georgia, she the daughter of a Baptist minister. Jehu John Ponder was the son of Jesse Ponder b 1760-1765 who was in York, SC and later in Habersham County, Georgia. Jesse Ponder had a brother Hezekiah Ponder and Daniel Ponder who both died in Buncombe County, NC. Jesse, Daniel and Hezekiah Ponder were the sons of Daniel PONDER from York Dist., SC with the references to Kings Creek and the Mr. DOVER reference in the history books. Now it turns out that John Pierson Ponder was married to one of the Antioch Church members in York. Don't know what this means yet, but guess which Dover's are close neighbors to these lines by 1850/60 Alabama? My John Dover in Randolph County and David Dover in Talladega County/Winston County.
The following names are some miscellaneous ones from Habersham County. There is a Roots list for that county. Sue Thompson has recorded most of the cemetery records and posts them periodically to the list. I thought they might be of help for someone. Just posted on Dover GenForum: Abraham DOVER lived in Sullivan County, MO prior to 1859, where he was one of the early settlers; by 1864 he was living in Linn County, MO. He was involved in a Sullivan Co. court case (assault with intent) that was continued for several years, and jurisdiction was transferred to Linn County -- where I have never found the outcome in any court records. (The Civil War disrupted the otherwise orderly processes and records!) His daughter, Mary, wed Michael AUSTIN in 1858 and bore a son, George, in 1859. Mary died in the summer of 1860. The 1860 census of Linn County shows a "Mrs. Dover" who was born in Kentucky, living with Michael AUSTIN and Mary. Does any of this look familiar to any of you DOVER researchers? If so, please contact me! Thanks, M. Wilson
I don't recall seeing this Dover at the Bureau of Land Management site before, but he's there now! Oh you darling man!! I didn't have a clue where to start looking for them in 1880. There wouldn't have been any children under 10 in the household so they weren't showing up in the soundex. When I realized this, I thought this is another 20 year search!! Each 1880 GA county, frame by frame, could take forever. Hi everyone I have added a couple more research tools for us to utilize. The Dover surname has just been approved for a couple of new boards. The Dover Bible board it to post any Dover information, that has been found in a bible. http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/dov/DoverBibl The Dover Biographies board it to post any biographies. http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/dov/DoverBios The Dover Deed board is for deeds http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/dov/DoverDeed The Dover Obituaries, is to post any obituaries you may run across http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/dov/DoverObits Dover Pensions http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/dov/DoverPens Dover Wills http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/dov/DoverWill Ok, some of you may be wondering why I have added these boards, the answer is I believe if they are used, it will be a tremendous help to us all. I know I have spent hours going through the list archives looking for information, that could of been posted to one of these board too.(along with the list!) In no way, do I want this to replace any postings to the list, I want to get our information, brick wall, ect, out there. All of these boards are connected to Rootswebs search engines, and that is a big plus. It should help our chances on someone new,(new cousins) in finding us. All of the boards are linked back to the Dover query board. The Dover query board links back to the mailing list page I set up. http://pages.cthome.net/familytree/ I do realize that genforum, seems to be the main query board at this time, even though we do have a board with Rootsweb. Which is great. BUT, anything you post on genforum is no longer "yours" it becomes property of genforum, and they have the copyright to it. Also, with the boards I have set up, if you want to delete ANY message you have posted, all you have to do is let me know, and it is gone. (Have I sold you on the new boards yet:) Here is the URL for the Dover GenConnect page. http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Dover If you get a chance will you please post your Dover querys there to:-) Boy, I do believe I have gone on long enough. Huffstetlar = Huffstutler Huffstutler is still a fairly common name around here. Lots of Logans in St. Clair Co.
I think this is really great. Where do I send a check to keep it going. Money is not all there is in the world and if I had known that finding out so much ( or so little in most cases )I would have done it sooner. BUT as we all , there was living to make and families to raise and I hardly had time to spend time for a ball game with my kids. Now that I am retired I think it is so great to spend all my time with my grandchildren, but it really makes me miss the time I missed with my children. Take time to smell the roses because it may never come again. Reach Out LOve YOU , Eldon H. Dover

I'm impressed! I am hopeful that I will be able to find info on the following: Thomas Jefferson DOVER and Lucinda Kasinger DOVER were my g-g-g-grandparents. Isaac DOVER and Nancy Turner DOVER were my g-g-grandparents. William Edward DOVER and Rose Ann Maynard DOVER were my g-grandparents. They were married in Baxter Co, AR and then moved their family to the Tulsa, OK area in 1926. Rose Ann DOVER and the children were definitely part indian, and probably Cherokee. I'm not sure about William as he died when I was very young, but my research leads me to believe that he may also have had some indian ancestry. They are not listed on any of the Cherokee rolls in Ok. My grandmother was Mazie Myrtle DOVER b. 1907, m. William Edward HARRIS in AR, about 1924. They had one child, Vernon Eugene HARRIS, my father. I have been able to receive lots of help from a cousin in OK, Laura Cooper, and I very much appreciate it. We are both stuck at Thomas Jefferson/Lucinda Kasinger DOVER. Anyone out there have any additional info. It would be very much appreciated. Glenna Ross --------------CF761683AD8817F9C066F948--

This is from a PONDER book about Malinda Dover. Notice another DOVER in the early part of the story :-). This one needs some clear thinking because I think there could be something going on here. What's the time frame on Mr. Dover? Where was he when quoted? Dennis Dennis, the first mention of The Dovers is on page 42 and I quote: General Joseph Graham in his Kings Mountain narrative, gives the name as Fonderlin, which Dr. Hunter in his Sketches repeats, But Colonel J. R. Logan, who has lived all his life of some seventy years in the Kings Mountain region, and whose grandfather, William Logan, was in the battle, states that all the aged persons of that section of country united in declaring that the youth's name was John Ponder....A Mr Dover says Colonel Logan, was likewise met on the march, and imparted some information to the whig leaders of Fergusons movements and whereabouts: and the families of the Ponders and Dovers still reside in York County., South Carolina, and Cleveland County, North Carolina, while Ponder's Branch of Kings Creek is a well known stream in that quarter. Ernest Vanlandingham No children John Jehu Leander Ponder left Alabama in 1883 lived in Ar. until 1889 and since that time in La. Julia Ann Ponder and V. J. Estate had 8 children Ethel, Avis Reubin Julia and 4 others I think that is about all there is on the family..... Since our Ponders were in the same area of Gordon and Cass County about the same time yours were let me know if you find anything out on the John Ponder family that married Winny Norwood Crook Ponder.....they lived there in 185O and 186O and 187O...then I suppose John and Winny died ( no proof) and the rest if the family moved to Moody Texas......We think John was the son of Jesse, but seems strange he would name one son John Jehu and one son John, but cannot place him in another family.....hope this helps.....
Betsy, I don't recognize any of these names and my incomplete census abstracts for 1900 Georgia don't pick up the names either. ONLY comment is the middle name ALONZO. That name was used in the line(s) descended from Dillingham Dover, son of Frederick and Margaret Dover. Ruth, I can't find a Jockey in Georgia or Tennessee. Does anyone know where that is? We aren't sure of the spelling. Do you think it is possible her sister Addleisa Dover is buried there since we don't know where or when she died?
