    1. [DOVER-L] Trudy's Family
    2. OK, obviously you know about WFT entry. :-) Only other thing I have to offer is a letter from another researcher on this line that Dennis shared with me a couple of years ago: Dear Dennis, Thank you for writing. The Elmer Dover you mentioned in your letter was my first cousin three times removed...... My GGG Grandfather was John Dover. I have not been able to identify his father, but think he lived in PA. John had five brothers Abaraham, Issac, Jacob, Hiram, Daniel and one sister Sarah. I have always assumed they were from PA but John's place of birth is given as VA in an article in Goodspeeds History of Jefferson Co. John married a Jemima Stevens and they had eight children. For some strange reason they named most of the boys after Napoleon Bonaparte. John and Jemima are buried near Ware, MO. My GG grandfather was Jerome Bonaparte Dover. He married Margaret Lucas and they had four children. One of whom, John Eldridge Dover, married Addie Cessna Russell. Their son Charles Dover was my grandfather. One of his daughters Mary Kathleen married Harold Ancell and they are my parents. My full name is Charles Dover Ancell. My G grandfather John was a station agent with the Missouri Pacific RR and moved to Sikeston, MO (about 50 miles East of Poplar Bluff) in the early 1900's. All of his children were raised in Sikeston. His father Jerome lived in Jefferson Co Missouri as did his father...... John Dover was born on Dec 4, 1789 perhaps in Western NJ or Ohio. His family moved to VA while John was a boy. John served as Sergeant in Captain Benjamin Jeffery's Company of Infantry, 1 Battalion, 1 Regiment, VA Militia from Sept 22, 1812 to April 1, 1813. John ran a pottery in Louisville, KY from about 1815 to 1826. He married Jemima Stevens, who was a dau of Rev Thomas Stevens, on Dec 9, 1817, at the home of her sister Susan Stevens Lee by Rev. David Chapman Banks. Jemima was born in Eng on Feb 2, 1791, and came to Louisville, KY when she was nine years old. John was a Medical Doctor but did not practice because Jemima was afraid to be left alone due to the Indian activity in the area around Louisville, KY. In 1826, they moved to Washington, Indiana. In 1840, they moved to St. Genevieve, Missouri and engaged in the pottery business. In 1844, they purchased a farm in Jefferson Co, Missouri in the Old Ditch Creek area near Ingal's Ford in the Big River Township. John was a Judge of the County Court and a prominent surveyor. John died of pneumonia after being (thrown) from a horse on Oct 14, 1857. He is buried by the Bethlehem Church in Jefferson Co, MO which is located on Highway Y, just Northwest of Ware, MO. Jemima died on October 4, 1874, and is buried beside John at the Bethlehem Church. Children: 1.Oscar Dover md. Elizabeth Alen 2,Amanda Dover md. Alexander Ziegler 3. Napoleon Bonaparte Dover 4. Angeline Dover md Eldridge Boley 8.LeRoy Dover md Margaret Francis Manion Their is more detailed data on dates and places in this John line. As far as siblings of your Daniel, only thing I see different is that he gives Abraham Dover md Rebecca Lytle and says that Isaac Dover d. in New Orleans, LA. There's a little more if you haven't already seen this, let me know. Source:Charles Ancell dated 13 Feb 1997

    2. Dear Earnest, Very sorry to hear about the loss of your uncle! There is a Jasper Lee Dover b. ca 1873 who was the s/o Edward B Dover. Is there any connection to him? The Going name is also interesting. I have Cherokee claim papers for a Hillhouse/Dover/Going connection. Can you tell us more? Sharon S

    2. Hi Trudy, I can only speak for myself, but must admit that I am pretty ignorant on Dover in Ohio. All of my research has been centered around NC SC GA TN AL MS AR. I have Dover who got over into OK and TX, but have not even really explored them yet. I have only been on the list since the first of the year, although I have kept up a little on the outside through Dennis and Gayle who have sent me things they thought would be of interest to me. I am still learning who's who and what they are looking for. The only thing that I have on your line comes from WFT Vol 10 # 1155. Your Theodore W. "Pap" Dover b. Dec 1844 in Ohio md. Nancy J. is listed as the s/o Daniel M Dover b. 11 July 1802 in Belmont Co Ohio d. 15 Jan 1881 in Taylorsville, Ohio. and was md to Mary J Patterson b. 17 June 1804 in W.VA? and died 17 January 1881.(Looks like she died 2 days after he did) This source gives 10 children for Daniel M Dover as well as parents and siblings for him. These Dover have a lot of KY connections. I have some other data, but have not verified any of it myself. Happy to share if you don't already know about this. Sharon S

    1. RE: [DOVER-L] Lawson Dover
    2. Dennis Dover
    3. Francis J. Dover was probably the first Dover in Georgia with the exception of another Dover .... Joshua. Francis is the oldest and most known Dover in the Dover family. He was a Revolutionary Soldier. I don't know of anyone researching their Dover family that hasn't wondered if/believed that Francis was their ancestor. All I can say is that he didn't father "that" many children. There's absolutely no evidence to support this, but I doubt Francis and Hezekiah were the only sons of their parents. As far as Lawson, I don't know what to think about Francis being his father. If Lawson was born 1800 SC as he always said he was, Francis was 40 years old when he was born (whatever that means). Lawson is perhaps from this Habersham deed: Book D Page 101 William Kitchens to Dawson Dover deed captioned Henry County, Georgia to Lot 52 of 13th District. Dec 29, 1826. Witness: Commick McCarter, Joseph Cross. Probated Henry County, Georgia before Thomas D. Johnson, J. P. Then there's a Muscogee County, Georgia reference for Francis: 1827 Lottery Francis Dover of Habersham County, Georgia, drew land in Muscogee County as a "REV SOLDIER." I believe Lawson Dover is found in the 1830 census for Muscogee County: DARER, Lawson 200002-110001 Columbus 287 Page 287 Lawson Dover? 30-40 1790-1800 Male 30-40 1790-1800 Female 30-40 1800-1810 Female 05-10 1820-1825 Male -05 1825-1830 Male -05 1825-1830 Female -05 1825-1830 There's no doubt that he was in 1840 Harris County, Georgia (next door): Page 261 132001-2111011 L. Dover 40-50 1790-1800 Female 40-50 1790-1800 Female 30-40 1800-1810 Female 15-20 1820-1825 Male 10-15 1825-1830 Male 10-15 1825-1830 Female 10-15 1825-1830 Male 05-10 1830-1835 Male 05-10 1830-1835 Male 05-10 1830-1835 Female 05-10 1830-1835 Male -5 1835-1840 Female -5 1835-1840 Female -5 1835-1840 If Lawson is Dawson in the Habersham deed, then he came from that area. Francis is the only "KNOWN" Dover from that area to be his father, unless maybe it was Johnson Dover. Lawson was "probably" born in Pendleton, SC or York, SC. If Lawson was born in Pendleton, his father should be Francis Dover or John Dover. We know Francis was in Pendleton by 1797. Francis doesn't jump out in the 1800 Pendleton census unless he is a Davis: Page 14 21010-30010 Francis Davis 26-45 1755-1774 Female 26-45 1755-1774 Male 16-26 1774-1784 Male 10-16 1784-1790 Male -10 1790-1800 Female -10 1790-1800 Female -10 1790-1800 Female -10 1790-1800 I have a hunch this could be Francis given the proximity of census neighbors and known deed names associated with Francis. Then there's the 1800 Pendleton census for John Dover: Page 5 40010-20010 John Dover 26-45 1755-1774 Female 26-45 1755-1774 Male -10 1790-1800 Male -10 1790-1800 Male -10 1790-1800 Male -10 1790-1800 Female -10 1790-1800 Female -10 1790-1800 I still suspect this John went to Buncombe County, North Carolina and that some combination of Bailey Dover, Elijah Dover, Frederick Dover, Jeptha Dover and John Dover are the males in the above census. Bailey went to Rabun Co., Georgia; Elijah stayed in Buncombe; Jeptha went to Gilmer (?); Frederick (one or both) went to Rabun, Lumpkin and Gilmer; and John went to Cherokee County, Georgia. All of this can't be true on this John's sons ... what if Lawson's father wasn't Francis ... could be the John from Pendleton. Nothing so far top give any indication of that. I pick up this question later in 1850 Alabama. The 1810 census for Pendleton shows: Page 159 Francis Dover 45+ -1765 20201-01210 Female 26-45 1765-1784 Female 16-26 1784-1794 Female 16-26 1784-1794 Male 16-26 1784-1794 Male 16-26 1784-1794 Female 10-16 1794-1800 Male -10 1800-1810 Male -10 1800-1810 Sharon S. can fill in the pro's and con's from her perspective. As long as we are discussing theory, I'll share one I grudgingly offered privately several years ago ... that maybe the John Dover in 1800 Pendleton was a brother to Francis and Hezekiah. This is how B. J. Frank and I met on the internet ... discussing too many John Dover's. There's room for them, we just have to look at the 1934 letter with a different view. Solving Lawson's parents are an important clue in solving my John's parents .... along with David Dover. Think these could be in part uncle and cousin issues

    3. Does anyone know for sure if the Anderson Dover from Gayle's post stating: page 70 Habersham Co. Anderson Dover(Cross's Capts. Dist) No 173 Dt. 16 Sec. 1 is Anderson Dover m. Jane Cross. Also, from the same post.is the Thomas Dover who shows in the 1805 Georgia land lottery for Chatham County, the Thomas Dover m. America Griffin with 9 children. Then also, there is a Thomas Dover who shown in Bounty grants of G. 1756-1909 in Glyn Co, Grant Book R.5 pg. 374 Granted 174 acres year 1835. Do we have more than one Thomas, or are both of these the same person. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks, Sharon Dover Romanek

I know one researcher, not on the Dover list, who thinks Lawson may have been the son of Francis J. But I have three versions of the list of sons of Francis J., and Lawson is not on any of these lists. Lawson was born in SC about 1800, and I suspect he was the son of one of the other early SC Dovers that we have all been trying to learn more about. Dennis, and Sharon Sukiennik, know more about this than I do and I invite them to comment also. Ode Carlisle

But he was MUCH darker than I am. And that did not come out till the 3rd phone call. So until I figure out a way to approach the issue, I just don't know what to do:-) Any advice on phone calls anyone?
