    3. Interesting!!! Wonder why she used Dover? Maybe it was during the time that the song that I have heard about called " The White Cliffs of Dover" was famous, or maybe it was a movie. Don't remember which one.I think this was suppose to be during WWII. 1. [DOVER-L] Elmer Dover Letter #2
    2. Dennis Dover
    3. St. Louis. Mo. June 4, 1944 Giles L. Dover 230 Park Avenue, New York, N.Y. Dear Cousin Giles: So glad you called me up while you were here and was sorry to have missed seeing you. I'm sending you a few notes of our immediate family, and a few references where you can find more records of same. Hope you can have someone look into the Washington Records because the answer to all of our questions is in those schedules of 1810. Please show this letter to your English Dover Cousin and ask him to please write to me and give me the names of all the Dovers he knows, and who was the Dover that he heard of who came to America because there were many Dovers. Tell him that the 1935 number of the "Genealogical Quarterly" published by Fudge & Co. Ltd., 94 York Road, South East London, England, contains an account of all the English Dovers and the price is $1.50 in American money, and if he can get a copy for me I will be glad to pay him for same and that I would like to know the names of the Rev. Thomas Stevens parents, and the family name of his wife, Juda - they lived in Great Missingdon Bucks, England 1775, and came to Louisville, Ky. In 1800. He was my Grandfather and a Baptist Minister and was sent to America as a Missionary to the Indians and was the 3rd Pastor of Bethel Baptist Church, Jackson, Mo., 1st permanent Baptist Church West of the Mississippi River. "Cavaliers and Pioneers" Abstracts of Land Patents and Grants of Virginia from 1623 to 1800 (5 volumes) by Niel Marian Nugent, is a very important reference if you can find it. Inquire of the Washington Library and Philadelphia Penn. Please let me know what your son finds out and answer soon. Sincerely, Yours Cousin, Elmer Dover John Dover, my Grandfather, was born on December 4, 1789, perhaps in Western New Jersey or Ohio; his brothers were Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Hiram, Daniel and one sister, Sarah Dover, who married a Hill. Jacob Dover was a seaman and sailed a ship to the Barbadoes. Daniel Dover lived in Ohio and is buried near Zanesville. Abraham Dover married Sarah, and lived in a few blocks of his brother John Dover in Louisville, Ky. In 1820, Isaac Dover in New Orleans died there during the Yellow Fever plague and his son, Isaac Dover, mover to New Jersey and died there. John Dover was an M.D., but did not practice because his wife was afraid to be left alone because of the Indians. He was a potter by trade and ran a pottery in Louisville from about 1815 to 1826, when he moved to Washington, Ind., and from there to St. Genevieve, Mo. In 1840, and from there to a farm on Old Ditch Creek near Ingal's Ford in 1844 Big River in Jeff. Co. Mo. where he died of pneumonia caused by being thrown from a horse about October 14, 1857, buried in Bethlehem, Mo. John Dover was married to Miss Jemima Stevens, daughter of the Rev. Thomas Stevens at the home of her sister Susan Stevens Lee, wife of Wm. P. Lee at Louisville, Ky. On December 9, 1817 by Rev. David Chapman Banks. She was born in Great Missington, Bucks, England in 1791 and came to Louisville when nine years old. Her sister, Lydia Stevens, born in England, was married at the home of here sister Susan Lee on the evening of December 24, 1812 to Edwin Brewster, the artist, who was born in Deerfield, W. New Jersey, Cumberland Co., August 28, 1793. She was born April 27, 1792. The Brewsters became acquainted with the Dovers at Deerfield, New Jersey and the Dovers of that generation made their fortune by selling cranberries from the White Marsh and several Dovers married into the White family and there were several Dover men living at Deerfield - one of which must have been our Great-Great-Grandfather. If you could go to Washington and look at the Census schedules of Cumberland Co., New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Carolina and New York of the 1810 census, you would have no trouble finding our Grand parents names, as all of the children's names are given in the schedules. Mary Stevens, youngest daughter of Rev. Thomas Stevens and Juda Stevens, born in England, was married to Gen. O.O. Howard and had a daughter Laura B. Howard, who married Ensing Otis, a Diplomat, and they obit in Spain. My Grandfather, John Dover, was raised in the Abraham Lodge No. 9, A.F. & A.M. in Louisville, Ky. In 1819. John and Jemima (Stevens) Dover had Oscar, born Louisville, June 1, 1820, who married Amanda Dover, born November 10, 1823 married Alexander Ziegler. John Dover moved with his family to Washington, Ind. In about 1825 and his son Jerome bonaparte Dover was born there November 21, 1826, who married Margaret Lucus. Died: At the residence of Captain Alexander Ziegler at Pevely, Mo. on Tuesday the 13th inst. Of consumption, Napoleon Bonapart Dover aged 43 years. California and Mont. Papers please copy. "God Calleth his chosen Ones". The date of this notice is not given but it must have been 1870 because he went to California in the 1849 Gold Rush and when his younger brother Leroy went to California in the sixties, he found his brother sick out West and nursed him until he was able to travel and lent him the money to come home and he visited my father, Bonaparte Dover in 1870. He never married and died soon afterward. Aleviana Dover, born Wash. Co. Ind. In 1829 was married near Ware, Jeff. Co., to Henry Kertz. Bonaparte Dover, son of John and Jemima (Stevens) Dover was born in Wash. Co., Ind. October 11, 1831 and came to St. Genevieve, Mo. in 1840 and was a Steam Boat Clerk until about 1850 when he came to Jeff. Co., Mo. He was married to Nancy Jane Lollar at her home at Grubville, Mo by the Rev. "Billy" McKay on Their children were, John Albert, obit Mont. Mary Belle (Dover) Stegmann, widow of Charles A. Stegmann, Minnie Alexiana Dover, who never married, Leroy Bonaparte Dover married Madge Curtis and Elmer Dover who married Clara D. Richardson, no children. Leroy Dover, son of John was born in Wash. Co., Ind. January 10, 1838 married Margaretta Frances Manion October 29, 1874. Obit January 3, 1913. His wife, Frances (Manion) Dover obit August 19, 1936. Angeline Dover, youngest daughter of John Dover married Eldredge Boli and had on son, Elec Boli, and she died in December 1857 and was buried by her oun request under a large cedar tree on a hill on the old road between Vineland and Blackwell. 3. This is for Malindy too. Here's the letter that Charles Dover Ancell was referring to .... Marcus Dover was the grandson of Augustus M. DOVER, son of Francis Marion & Mary Bailey Dover. Think Ky is Hezekiah ... I do. I have a second letter written by Elmer Dover that contains references to his Dover's in New York. I think Charles Dover Ancell has a website if you're interested. Marcus Dover 1939 Letter This is a transcription of a typewritten letter received from the files of the John Randolph Dover family. Louisville, Kentucky, Oct. 18, 1939. Mr. Elmer Dover, 5941 Cote Brilliante Ave. St Louis, Mo. Dear Sir :- I was very much interested in receiving your letter and would be glad indeed if we together could patch up the tree of the Dover family and would like to get a copy of your History of it when completed. I am a son of Louis L. Dover who was born in Pickens Co. Georgia, Feb. 3, 1866, my grandfather was Augustus McDowell Dover, I do not know the date or place of his birth but think he was born in East Georgia or Vir. My Great grand father was born in England. My father (Louis L. Dover) died at Acworth, Georgia last Dec. 15, 1938, and was buried with his father and grand father and I do not remember whether my grand father was Ky Dover or Stephen Dover or (Steve) as they called him, either Ky or Steven Dover was my grandfathers brother and died some where in Mo. I think at Poplar Bluff, I do not know the date. * (Six months) About * prior to my father's death he gave me some notes including the above which I have misplaced and am quoting from vague memory but will try to locate and give you more information later if possible. I regret that I am not in possession of any information regarding the members of the family you mention. I have been estranged from my family since age 15, my mother passed when I was five and I just grew up as did Topsy the stray pup and came to Louisville in the year 1910 and had little contact with my family until my father nearing the end called for me and I went to see him in February last year. I am a traveling salesman and have recently made a change in my connections which accounts for my inability at this time to collect both the family data that I should have and my own faculties. However, at the earliest opportunity I shall try to gather more information and if successful will gladly communicate it to you. Hoping that we may yet be able to trace more accurately the family tree and that you will be able to secure the necessary data to admit you to the Sons of the Revolution, I am, Your Cousin, Marcus A. Dover 3640 Longview Ave. Louisville, Ky. P. S. Several years ago or about 1935 I received a card from "Fudge & Co. Ltd. 94 York Road, London, S.E. England suggesting that I order a copy of the Summer 1935 number of "The Genealogical Quarterly" which contained information regarding the Dover family, price $1.50, I regret that I did not order this. 1. Re: [DOVER-L] Indiana Dovers
    2. Sharon, Thanks for the response. I too have been hanging around for about one year reading all of the Dover entries. No connection has been made to the IN Dovers although I'm sure there is a KY connection. I have been contact with Marilyn Gentry who has been looking for Neely and even though he was in Greene Co also, we cannot hook them up. Neely married Phema Wiles on 10/24/1827 I am aware of the other Joshua and Dennis has kept him in mind as well. My Joshua's wife was Nancy McFarland and she was born 1800. She's listed in the 1850 & 1860 census. Since Nancy remarried in 1842 I assume Joshua had passed by then. There is early mention of the following in Greene Co, IN. Joshua Dover purchased a business in 1822. Zefehiah (I assume this to be Zepheniah) lived next to Joshua's farm. John Dover born 1790 had 4 children as pupils in 1815 in the first school in Beech Creek Twp. Dica Dover maried Hiram Hicks on 11/5/1823 Archibold Dover born 1802 married Nancy Hamons on 5/22/1823 Rebecca Dover married James Bryant 11/18/1831 There is mention of Isaac Dover born 1798 and Zepheniah born 1815. I'll just keep hanging around. THESE DOVERS. What can you do? :)pam

    1. Re: [DOVER-L] Indiana Dovers
    2. Pam, My mind comes up blank. I remember the Neely name, but want to say it was on a WFT listing. If you don't have access to those, will look it up when I get a chance. The Joshua name of course peaks my curiousity, because of the Joshua Dover b. 1753 on Haw River in NC who was a Rev Sol. Unfortunately, Joshua has been one of those elusive Dover. We have a copy of his file which should be a map as to where he was, but the records don't seem to be found to give us any kind of real data on him. He had kids, that's for sure. He was in NC & SC so his kids could show up with either birthplace. He was in SC at the time of his enlistment. We can't even seem to find census records on him. Yesterday, Dennis was asking for my response to a possible father of Lawson. I've thought about that a lot today. There are things I think possible, but I'm still torn by the fact that there is still so much that we don't know, to be really sure of some of these people. Do I think he is the son of Francis J Dover? I don't really think so with the known data as we have it. I agree with Dennis that FJD and Hez were not the only children in their family. These Dover men were too prolific for that unless they died at an early age. :-) Joshua is too close to home for any FJD researcher not to consider in the equation of family. Joshua may also tie up some of the loose ends in TN KY and that direction. It's just going to take more digging. Roan Co, TN marriage records show: Richard Dover/Dica Rice 13 July 1812 Joshua Dover/Patsy Rice 10 Sept 1813 This is the only Dica Dover that I remember seeing. Sorry I can't be of more help. Will keep my eyes open for you. Sharon S

    3. Can you tell us more about the Kentucky connection? This could help us sort out sons of Joshua Dover who were also in Kentucky (apparently). Also, do you have any information from Pennsylvania on Philip prior to the 1790's? Any indication that Philip had a German heritage? Thanks for all the interesting information. >>> "bushytail" <bushytail@jps.net> 04/01/99 12:37pm >>> Thank You for responding to my post! Its great to know you are out there. I have an article from the Belmont County History 1988. In 1799, Philip Dover purchased land in Pultney Township, Belmont County. He was later appointed one of the first constables of that township. Both Philip and his wife, Margaret, died before 1830. Record is found of there ten children.Sons Isaac, Abraham, John, and perhaps Jacob were living in Kentucky when a suit was filed by the heirs of Philip Dover. Four daughters had been married: Hannah to John Finley, Sarah to Nathaniel Ayres, Rebecca to John Davis, Lydia, then deceased, to Adam Long. Lydia left three children, Philip, Abraham and Lorenzo. Daniel and Hiram purchased properties in Morgan and Muskingum counties before1839. Hiram born 1805 married Emily Flagg, was admitted to Morgan County Medical Society, and sold goods and sundries. Hiram Died 1850. The History of his descendants, Particularly a son, Thomas Philip and Grandsons Fred and John is well documented in Morgan County. Daniel was born in 1802. He married Mary Patterson b June 17 1804 on July 11 1822. They raised family of ten children in southern Muskingum County. Daniel , a farmer, then sold his land , which yielded both coal an oil, and moved to Taylorsville (Philo). The couple resided on Market St. until their deaths in January 1881. Abraham was 74 in1908 when he went to Zanesville on a river boat, valley gem, to visit his daughter, Hattie Knox. After a Pleasant evening, he became Ill and died of Heart Failure. Theodore followed the Example of his Grandfather Philip who came from to POhio from Pennsylvania: his Uncles who went to Kentucky: and his father who moved to Muskingum County in search of profit from the land: by moving to Marshall County, Kansas. After the deaths ofDaniel and Mary, Lemaul, his wife Catharine B Jackson, and six children went to Kansas. It is not known how long the family remained in the west. One of the daughters Elizabeth Jane is the Grandmother to the writer of this story. She told of the harshness of life on the Prairie, the sandstorms, and runnied crops which caused the family to long for the green hills of Ohio. Lizzie taught school in Kansas and had a suitor who was anxious to marry her. She rejected his proposal and returned to Zanessville with her family, where she worked in the pottery. 1. [DOVER-L] VA Dover
    2. Marjorie, Dennis and I have discussed this before. One of the early researchers, Juanita McMann was heading in that direction before she stopped researching. >From what little I've seen about it in her notes, not sure just what her thoughts in that direction were. She does mention a William Dover in Augusta Co VA who was advertising for a slave who ran away in very early years. So, there must have been early Dover there. Think that Bobbie Jean has also had thoughts about VA. As far as I know, no one has followed up on it, yet. Sure would be nice if we could find a very very old Dover will that named all these children so we could finally figure out what was going on!!!!! :-) Sharon S

    2. Trudy, I wished that I had information to give you...but, I'm new to the DOVER list also. I don't know past my great grandfather, George Dover, abt. 1858, GA, who married Sara Lou DALE, b. 1870. So, I'm in the same boat. But, I have gotten some good advice from a couple of the people on the list, especially Dennis Dover. He's the one that pointed me to the list in the first place. I'm hoping that your message will encourage others to jump-in with some help. BTW, I like your email address!! :-) Jeff H.

    3. I noticed that there was both the spelling Dovers and Dover in this. Is that the way it was originally? Just wondering. I know some of us wonder if the Dovers family and the Dover family are two separate ones or not. Also, I noticed this man was born in Matthews, Missouri. I wonder where the name Matthews came from? May be nothing but might be something too. The King's Mt. area that is very important to our research has an area very close to it called Matthews, in S.C. also. Interesting. We know from this too that his father was Jasper Dovers/Dover. He would have been born sometime in the late 1800's I would think. Wonder where?Anybody know? I don't have a Jasper in my files yet. 3. Hi Everyone! Just wanted to voice my opinion to the DOVER list. I joined a the DOVER list about 6 months ago as I have been trying to (and have) research my DOVER line. I see only the same few people posting on this list. I have sat back and viewed most. I have posted a more than a few times to the list with not one acknowledgment that I was here. I am on several other list and they have been very interesting and more than helpful. I would like to see this list be of help to others that may have just started searching for there DOVER family. Anyway I am again a descendent of Theodore Pap DOVER and Nancy Jane REED. I have met a few other DOVER cousins on some other Genealogy lists. In fact I am having a small Dover Reunion on Easter Sunday. The family that are coming all are from the Bay Area in California. They are the Grandchildren of Jesse Clyde DOVER who is the brother to my great-grandfather Alonzo McClure Dover. I am very excited !! I hope each of you enjoy your Easter Holiday.. Trudy :)
