I ran across the following Posted by June Sarte <sarte@sunline.net> on Sat, 06 Feb 1999, in response to Potter/Gamblin, posted by Laura Cooper on Sun, 24 Jan 1999 Is this Mary familiar to anyone? :)pam >Surnames: Potter, Gamblin, Dover, Greathouse I am a descendant of the Potter family of Warren Co KY. My gr gr grandfather Alonzo Potter's Parents(Daniel Potter and Nancy Greathouse) were married in Warren Co KY and after their death Alonzo and his sibling were raised by their grandfather Lewis Potter. Alonzo married Pencelle(Pencilia) Gamblin in Hamilton Co IL in 1840. I believe she may be the daughter of William Gamblin but have no proof as yet. William and Alonzo both owned land in neighboring Wayne co. IL in the same time period and later (1850) they were neighbors in Ripely Co. MO. It is believed by other Gamblin researchers that the Dover children you see listed in the 1850 Ripley Co MO census were the children of the wife of William Gamblin, Mary Dover by a previous marriage. Pencelle Gamblin Potter died in 1853 and is buried in Richardson Cemetery, near Owensville, Gasconade MO. Alonzo married Mrs Eliza Gamblin (also on the 1850 Ripley Co MO census) in 1853 after Pencelle's death. I would like more information about these Gamblin women and their relationship to William Gamblin and his wife Mary Dover.
Overton Co., TN is one of the places that Joshua Dover, Rev Sol, listed as a place of residence in his pension papers. PLEASE keep us posted on data found in that area. If you haven't seen data, from the pension application, let me know and I'll post it. Does the name Hammond have any significance to you in Solomon's name? I may know of another possible connection if it is from a surname of that period. Sharon S
In resonse to your census information regarding Joshua Dover; My relative Solomon Hammond Dover(born Burke Co. N.C.-1806) moved with his parents Joshua Dover and Elizabeth Childers to Warren Co. ,KY at an early age, then Anderson Co. Tenn, then Overton County, Tenn(married there in 1827), Solomon and his wife then moved to Montgomery Co. ,Ill(1828), Henry County, Iowa(1834). I finally saw a copy of Warren County Tax information of 1804 which shows a Joshua Dover with one horse and no land. I cannot find any other reference to him in Warren County. I am starting to search records in Anderson and Overton Co. Thanks for your information.
I don't know if these names mean anything to anyone, but I found them in a recently acquired Volume 1 - History of Walker County GA. On page 287, listed under "Soldiers of the World War" are these two names: Henry Dover Millard Dover I assume the reference is to WWI. Hope someone knows these guys. Diane
Kathryn, I don't recognize the name of your gguncle. However, there may be a connection. My Dover family has lived all around that area of North GA for many years. Unfortunately, I just don't know their names, YET. So, if I run across the name of Bethel, I'll let you know. Thanks, Jeff H.

Hello again; you'll see I have a new email address now. Can you send me your address again please only I went to Oxford yesterday (one of those lovely hazy sunny spring mornings until it rained), so I stopped by in Wheatley en route. So I got you some notelets with pictures of the village on, plus a booklet about the Church. From this booklet it appears that, although there was a Chapel in Wheatley, this was dependent on the Parish Church at Cuddesdon. It wasn't until 1750 that the Chapel was consecrated for all services, but even then it reamined part of the Cuddesdon parish; that's why Wheatley occurences are recorded in the Cuddesdon Parish Registers. I have the complete transcribed Cuddesdon PRs on microfiche and will look as these tommorrow. All the best. Tony Dover Cheltenham, England
If you tell me more about the painting your looking for, maybe I can help. I was in Oxford yesterday and visit fairly regularly. Tony Dover Cheltenham, England
