    3. COMPENDIUM OF HISTORY, REMINISCENCE AND BIOGRAPHY. Nebraska. JOHN W. DOVER. Many sons from English soil have given of their energy and strength of purpose in helping: to build up what was some few years ago a barren and wild waste of prairie, and have endured almost incredible hardships and dangers in the doing. John W. Dover, the subject of this biographical writing, is one of those mentioned above, and after thirty-six years of varied experiences on the western frontier, is now amply repaid for his endurance and faithfulness to the state and county, where he chose his home many years ago. Mr. Dover resides on his fine farm, which is located in section twenty-four, township twenty-two, range one, west, Madison county, where he and his family enjoy the respect and esteem of a host of friends and acquaintances. Mr. Dover is a native of England, born in 1852 in Westershire, a son of James and Jane (Nicholson) Dover, also natives of England. The father was a Morocco leather dresser by occupation, and had plied that trade all through the years of his residence in his native land. Mr. Dover and his parents left their native country in the year 1865, sailing by way of Liverpool to New York, on the steamship "Jeremiah Thompson," and after reaching America, they proceeded to Delaware county, Iowa, where they located, and remained for ten years. In 1875, the family moved to Madison county, Nebraska, taking up a homestead in section twenty-six, township twenty-two, range one, west, and on this land built a good frame house. Our subject worked one year on the Craig & Clark ranch, when he first came to Nebraska. In the earliest days of settlement in Madison county, the Dover family went through many hardships and dangers. In the blizzard of 1888, our subject lost considerable cattle in the terrible storm of snow and sleet, a storm that will ever live in the memories of those who witnessed it, and as late as 1894, Mr. Dover suffered losses through the hot winds, which were occasioned by the terrible drouth that devastated the country. The nearest market places in the pioneer days were Columbus and Wisner, both being several miles distant. Deer and antelope were plentiful in those times, and could frequently be seen brousing around. Mr. Dover was united in marriage in 1881 to COMPENDIUM OF HISTORY, REMINISCENCE AND BIOGRAPHY. 965 Miss Susie Manning, and Mr. and Mrs. Dover are the parents of eleven children, whose names are as follows: Eva, Pearl, James, Grace, May, John, Myrtle, Susie, Roy, Lena and Lawrence. Mr. and Mrs. Dover and family are highly respected in their community, and Mr. Dover is well known throughout this section of the state as a substantial and progressive citizen, a credit to his home county. -- Happy Hunting:) Patricia Manson Dover Listmanager Alabama Listmanager ICQ # 35834412--IM pvmtrish http://www.myfreeoffice.com/treeshaker/

    3. COMPENDIUM OF HISTORY, REMINISCENCE AND BIOGRAPHY. Nebraska. FREDRICK J. DOVER. Fredrick J. Dover, who lives on section eleven, township twenty-two, range one, west, in Madison county, Nebraska, occupies an enviable position among the old-timers and successful agriculturists of the county. He has lived thirty-nine years in Madison county, and has been part of the growth and development of the region, building up for himself a good home. Mr. Dover is a native of Wales, his birth occurring in the year 1858; he is a son of James and Jane (Nicholson) Dover, both natives of England; our subject's father was a Morocco leather dresser in the old country. In 1854 Mr. Dover's father came to America on a sailboat, and later returned to Wales. In short time they came back to America, again in a sailboat, and after landing here they went to Iowa, where they settled and remained until 1872; then came to Madison county, Nebraska, where they took up a homestead and steadily improved same. The family first settled on Shell creek, but the Indians drove them out, and they then moved to section twenty-six, township twenty-two, range one, west, where they took up the homsetad [sic] which is their present home. In the earliest days of settlement, the Dover family endured many hardships and discouragements, which when related, seem almost incredible to all but those who have actually experienced them. Many times they fought prairie fires to save their lives and property; during the years of 1872, 1873 and 1874 the grasshopper pests destroyed every vestige of vegetation and crops; Indians were a great source of anxiety, and many times the little family were afraid for their lives, on one occasion, as related above, they being compelled to move on account of them. Deer and antelope were plentiful on the western frontier in the first days of settlement, and could frequently be seen browsing about. 1014 COMPENDIUM OF HISTORY, REMINISCENCE AND BIOGRAPHY. Mr. Dover was united in marriage in 1891 to Miss Sylvia Groff, and Mr. and Mrs. Dover are the parents of three children, namely: Ruby, Harold, and Laura. They are a fine family, and enjoy the respect and esteem of all who know them. -- Happy Hunting:) Patricia Manson Dover Listmanager Alabama Listmanager ICQ # 35834412--IM pvmtrish http://www.myfreeoffice.com/treeshaker/

    3. History of the State of Nebraska AL. Dover Among the prominent old settlers of eastern Nebraska, we mention the name of Al. Dover as being one of the best known from the fact that he has spent all but six years of his life in this region, and during that time he and his father have devoted their best efforts to aiding in the development of the natural resources of Madison county, helping to build up the community in which they chose their home. Our subject now resides on section four, township twenty-two, range one, which has remained the home place since the family came to Madison county. Mr. Dover is a native of Wales, his birth occuring November 26, 1865, and he is a son of James and Jane (Nicholson) Dover. In 1854, Mr. Dover's father came to America, settling in Massachusetts, there remained three years and worked at his trade, which was that of Morocco leather dresser, which trade he had learned in Wales. He returned to Wales and later came back to America with his family, sailing from Liverpool to New York. After reaching American soil, Mr. Dover started for the west, locating in Delaware county, Iowa, where he remained eight years; be then brought his family to Madison county, Nebraska, coming by the prairie schooner route. After arriving at his destination, he took up a homestead and tree claim four miles northeast of Madison, on which he put up a sod house, the family living in this six years, when it was succeeded by a good frame house. Much more can be gathered and compiled and much more needs to be found regarding the parentage of Mary J. Mode Dover. I can be reached at: 3725 Terrace View Rd., Knoxville, TN 37918 (423-687-6646) E-mail At: risstaff@ris-corp.com Wade Green(e) is my 2nd great grandfather. He was born on the 6th of August 1833 in Cocke Co. and died on 15 July 1905. He is buried at Clay Creek Baptist Church near Bybee. Wade's parents were John and Martha Maria Hampton Green, who came to Tennessee from South Carolina. I discovered that Wade had fought during the Civil War with Co. C, 8th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry. Not only did he fight, it also seems that four brothers may have fought as well. Brothers Joseph and Wesley fought with the same regiment and company. Another brother, John, may have fought, but with a different regiment, and brother William may have fought in the same regiment but with a different company. The following is a brief account of the history of the 8th Tennessee and Wade's experiences during his term of service. Wade Green mustered into service on 15 May 1863 at Camp Dick Robinson, Kentucky. According to company muster rolls Wade was "sick in hospital at Crab Orchard, Kentucky" during July and August of 1863. The May and June roll indicates that he was "at hospital, Chattanooga Tenn. Wounded in action at Resaca, Georgia May 14, 1864." According to his pension records, Wade lost his little finger during this battle. He complained of how this wound hurt, cracked and bled during the winter. Wade's brother Wesley was wounded on the 4th of August at the battle of Utoy Creek, Georgia. Wade was again "sick in hospital, Knoxville, Tenn. Since May 14, 1864." Being sick was a typical experience for the Civil War soldier. His regiment was stationed at various places throughout the war such as Nicholasville and Lexington, Kentucky, Greenville, Jonesboro, Strawberry Plains, and Knoxville, Tennessee. An inspection report during their stay in Knoxville on 27 Feb. 1864 stated that the 4th and 8th Tenn. Regiments were "in bad condition as regards appearance, discipline, and drill." The 8th moved by train on the 26th of April to Red Gap, Georgia for the beginning of the Atlanta Campaign. The regiment was heavily engaged at Resaca on May 14 where Wade was wounded. Although almost constantly engaged for the next three months, the heaviest fighting for the regiment came with its attempt to cross Utoy Creek on the 6th of August 1864. Brigadier Gen. Reilly wrote " Where all behaved so gallantly, it is very difficult to give special mention to any, but I cannot, in justice, neglect to bear official testimony to the gallant and heroic conduct of the 8th Tennessee Infantry Officers and men. The list of casualties, however, is their best eulogy, when it is known that the regiment went into the charge with but 160 muskets." Captain James W. Berry stated that " The regiment entered this charge with 223 men, lost 26 killed, five mortally wounded, 36 wounded, and 16 missing, making a total of 83 casualties. In this serious charge the officers and men of the regiment exhibited in the highest degree the bravery, discipline, presence of mind which characterizes veteran troops." The regiment moved on to Decatur, Georgia September 8th where it stayed for a few months. The regiment moved into Chattanooga, Pulaski and then took part in the fighting from Pulaski, to Columbia, to Spring Hill, to Franklin, and finally to Nashville. The 8th suffered seven casualties at Franklin. During the battle of Nashville on December 16th, 1864 the regiment made a charge and captured four pieces of artillery and about 200 or 300 prisoners. Early in 1865 the regiment helped take Wilmington, North Carolina and occupied this city until it moved on to Newbern, Goldsboro, and then to Raleigh, North Carolina. Wade and his regiment were mustered out of service at Company Shops, North Carolina on the 30th of June 1865. No mention is made as to Wades return trip back to his home in Cocke Co. Also, it is not really known why he decided to fight with the Federal Army. Many fought to save the Union, others fought to protect their homes and family, some fought because they would be deemed cowards if they didn't, still others joined up for the adventure and excitement and to escape the boredom of farm life, and some actually believed that slavery was wrong. Many were enticed to join by the promise of a bounty and had no particular allegiance to anything but their monthly pay. For whatever reason Wade Green fought, I am proud of him, regardless of the side he chose to fight for. It is his courage, strength, and determination that I honor. We are not likely to see such displays of shear bravery and undying loyalty to ones country and homeland as was exhibited by these men who fought during our American Civil War. I have reenacted many of the battles that Wade and the 8th Tennessee were involved in and have experienced first hand what they experienced and how they suffered. Though my experiences and sufferings are laughable compared to those of my Civil War ancestors they are plenty enough to make me appreciate their sacrifices. It would be well that we should all have to live these experiences for just one weekend. Family tradition has it that while Wade was away three of his daughters where raped by confederate soldiers. Atrocities such as this, in addition to brutal guerrilla warfare, political differences and opinions regarding slavery and secession were common and extreme in East Tennessee. We must start with our progenitor, the one who we all basically originated from, MARY JANE MODE. She was born in or around McDowell Co. NC ca. July 1848-50 and died, according to Brown Funeral Home records, on 26 Oct. 1908 in Newport/Bybee Tenn. of consumption, better known as tuberculosis. She is buried, according to Lawrence Burgess of Newport, at Clay Creek Baptist Church in Newport/Bybee. There isn't a marker for her grave. We do not know the parents of Mary (Jane) Mode. She is said to be of Cherokee Descent, having long, black hair, as did several of her daughters. I have spoken to many members of the MODE, DOVER, BURGESS, TAYLOR, WOREX, and related families who have generally given the same testimony to the fact that someone in the family was Indian. As far as I know the Cherokee portion of our heritage begins with Mary Jane Mode. The characteristics of black hair, high cheek bones, brown eyes and dark complexions is evident in many members of our clan, namely Lou Dover Burgess, Mary Magdalene Dover Taylor, Lea Dover Burgess, etc. Mary Jane Mode married or lived with Augustus C. Dover in McDowell Co. NC beginning around 1871. I have not found a marriage record for them. They left McDowell Co. around 1887, according to Cocke Co. tax lists, and moved to the Newport/Bybee Tennessee area. The following is how this family appeared in the 1900 Cocke Co. In 1782 he sold parts of this tract and moved to a new home on Kings Creek in South Carolina. >> There was a James LEEPER in Mecklenburg. His wife died by 1801. This LEEPER family is also said to be in Lincoln County. On the earlier post about the deeds, John STROUD was a witness along with John DOVER. I can't find STROUD in Mecklenburg yet but there was a bunch of them including three John (STROUD's) in early Orange County, North Carolina. Two of them were born early 1700's. Most of them are gone before long and two STROUD's, including one John STROUD, do appear in the 1778 Camden District which included York. Camden included six counties. Robert Watkins of S.C. to John Hill of Meck., for £50, 350 acres part of 700 acres purchased by said Watkins and Francis Cost of George Brown of York County, Prov. Of Maryland [sic] 3 Sept. 1766 on S side Catawba River on Killions Creek …. Robert Watkins (WR) (Seal). Wit: John Dover, John Stroud (X). Rec. Oct. term 1768. Source: Marjorie Stansel Killions Creek is Killians Creek which is about 2 miles long and is located in the very Northeast corner of present day Gaston County, North Carolina. Killians Creek is located 1.3 miles West of Lucia, North Carolina which is just Northwest of Charlotte, NC. I see Dallas, North Carolina and Long Creek in the same area which I remember looking at a couple of years ago that had another reference to John Dover and Frederick Hambright. I seem to remember that the hint was that Fred Hambright lived on Long Creek before he built his home near Kings Mountain. Sharon S. or B. J. might recall more of the specifics. Side issue that is pretty amazing. If this location near Lucia, North Carolina fits with the 1790 census for Mecklenburg County, North Carolina ... I can draw a line from 1790 Mecklenburg through Georgia that ends up in 1850 Tallapoosa that extends further out to Mississippi, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Mecklenburg also has the roots of the early APPLETON family, the middle name of Bailey Dover. There's some BAILEY's there too. Marjorie really came up with a find on these Mecklenburg County records. Here's the other one: Mecklenburg County North Carolina 1766 Page 780? John Thomas Jnr. & Thomas Rainey. 100 acres on King's Creek below Kuykendalls land including John Dovers improvement and mill seat. Looks like the Thomas and Rainey were in 1790 Chester Co., SC, just south of York. Both were one page from Isham FIELDING who I suspect is the grandfather of Bailey Dover's wife Martha Ann FIELDING. The Fieldings went to Pendleton Dist., SC before Hall County, Cherokee County and Cobb County, Georgia. Marjorie, didn't we have Zephaniah in Mecklenburg too? Now I'm beginning to wonder about Zephaniah being a John Dover. Know Sharon S. has wondered about this too. This is a path/time comment and question. The 1768 deed in Mecklenburg is closest to the 1769 date that John Dover went? to Wrightsborough as a Quaker. Can this be the same John Dover? Off hand I would say no because the John Dover that went to Wrightsborough received his grant while he was a resident of Orange County? I would speculate that the John Dover in Mecklenburg is the senior from Orange County and that the one who went to Wrightsborough was the junior from the 1755 tax/deed records. Old John died at 110 years and do we really see him in a 1790 census? I still have to wonder if the John Dover in 1800 Buncombe is one of the two John's from 1755 Orange County.

    1. Re: [DOVER-L] Dovers in the Pruett's Chapel Cemetary, Ark
    2. Henderson's name is a mystery just like the middle name Gilbert that I, my Dad and Grandpa had. Think I may have a lead on Gilbert .... there was a Mark Gilbert one page from Bailey Dover when he was in Coosa County, Alabama in 1850. This same Gilbert was in 1870 Etowah County, Alabama just a few miles from where my family were when they left in 1868. Feel pretty strongly about that because there were also Fielding or Appleton in the same area of Etowah at the same time.
