OK, let's try it this way: This was forwarded to me and all I know is that it appeared in the Gilmer Co. Heritage: 508 FREDERICK DOVER Frederick Dover, born about 1799 in S.C., moved to Gilmer County in the 1860's from Lumpkin County with sons Burton, Edmund, Augustus and their families. Frederick was probably a brother of Francis Dover who came to Gilmer County earlier, sometime prior to 1850. Two sons, Sherrod Washington and Green Berry, married Rabun County girls and settled there. There were at least four other children. In Lumpkin County the Dover family were miners and farmers according to census records for 1850 and 1860. Mining could have been the attraction for the move from Rabun County where they were living in 1840 and its shutdown the reason to look for more space when they moved to Gilmer County. Buncombe County, N.C. was home in 1830. Land deed records there show Frederick Dover bought 100 acres on Dicks Creek from John Imbler on October 30,1830 and sold same on December 6,1837 to William Martin. ("Buncombe Co., N.C. Index to Deeds 1783-1850" by Southern Historical Press). I am descended from Green Berry Dover and am contributing this recently developed back- ground information hoping it will be helpful to Gilmer County families and to let you know you have well wishing relatives in other North Geor- gia Counties. I'm back everyone. Sorry to have been laying so low. I have had a few set backs, but hopefully they are all over now, and I can get to posting again to the list like I usually do. This index holds many many Davis names. Too many to post. I suggest if anyone has any Dover names in Tennessee during this time period that they go to this link and look. As I said in an earlier post, this is where I found two of my Dover names listed as Davis. Writing letters to other people with a stamped self addressed envelope enclosed is kinda like winning the lotto. It does work. I'd like to share one letter I just ran across looking for something else. It's a letter from Cecil T. Dover in Birmingham, Alabama dated 1996. Cecil tells me that he is 77 years old and has been deaf since the age of 19 months from a childhood disease. He goes on to tell me his family going back to Sherman Dover who married Vicie Blackwood. >From my records that marriage took place in 1886 Blount Co., AL (thanks to Terry Jackson). The marriage record shows R. S. Dover who I believe is Richard S. Dover, son of Burton Dover and Nancy Page married in Gilmer Co., GA in 1854. Burton is a strong probable as being the son of Frederick and Jane Dover. Please contact me if you have any connections. Cecil wrote a very gracious and informative letter. I'll be glad to give you his mailing address. Know all his kids names too. Cecil is surrounded by kin in Birmingham and Alabama that he doesn't know about. It's true of all of us. I've got another letter from Alabama that I'm going to look for too. Dennis
In a message dated 6/14/99 8:45:31 AM Pacific Daylight Time, mmanson@snet.net writes: << Huffman, Anice D. C., b. 14 February 1876, d. 19 July 1878. >> There's a HUFFMAN family connection with the family of John Dover's son Lemuel in Arkansas. It's a Dolph Huffman b 1888 whose parents "might be" David & Mary Annie MITCHELL. That's all I know. It's possible this HUFFMAN family came to Arkansas with some other allied families from Mississippi (Leake, Scott and Neoshoba county area) having come from the Tallapoosa or Randolph county area of Alabama after 1850. I wonder if Dolph isn't a Rudolph. Lots of HUFFMAN families way back when in Lincoln County, North Carolina.
Hi I have just put on line everyone that I am aware of, that is buried in the same cemetery as my Jeff Dover. I am going to send it to the list, in case any of the other names might be familiar. OLD DALLAS CEMETERY, Lafayette Co Ms Located in the Dallas Community, Section 21, Township 10 South, Range I West. Leaving Oxford on Highway 6 East, take Highway 334 for 12 miles, then turn right on 331 through Tula Community; pass New Elbethel Church and take first dirt road to the right for approximately 4 miles. Cemetery located on the left. This cemetery is in VERY BAD condition. Many of the stones are almost unreadable, or are unreadable, I have notes from 1978, and matched what I could. I am also adding what I can. There was a Old white oak tree in the middle that has now fallen across some graves and some of the stones are broken under it. If this for some reason get all jumbled up, I have added all the last names of the people listed, to try to help you follow it. Swaim, Annie Glide, daughter of E. J. and J. F., b. Can you please tell me about Dr. Kearsey. I wonder if he possibly is related to my Kirksey side? It is possible, I would imagine that Kearsey is a variation or the original spelling of Kearsey. I would very much like to contact him. I just realize the message has his address on it. I will reply to both of you. There is also a Kirksey list. I will look forward to hearing from you both. No wonder it's confusing with the old counties: Mecklenburg County [North Carolina] was formed in 1763 and included the present-day North Carolina counties of Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Union, Lincoln, Gaston, Rutherford, and Polk (and other western counties not yet settled at that time) and all or part of the South Carolina counties of Spartanburg, Cherokee, Union, Chester, York, and Lancaster. Fortunately, most or perhaps all of the Mecklenburg County wills survive. There's still hope for old John Dover's will :-) Appleton's Bookstore in Charlotte, North Carolina seems to have a wide selection of genealogy books: http://www.appletons.com/genealogy/homepage.html
