    1. [DOVER-L] DOVER & DURHAM
    2. Both Anderson Dover and John Dover were in Cherokee County, Georgia in 1840. John Dover was in 1850 Randolph County, Alabama and then in Blount County, Alabama by 1858. Bailey Dover, John's son, was in 1850 Coosa County, Georgia and then in Blount County, Alabama by 1859, as was Bailey's sister Lucinda Dover Orr Bennett. Bailey's first born, Caroline Malinda Dover was born June 25, 1842. She married John Perry Phillips in Blount County, Alabama in 1866 shortly before Bailey's and John Perry's families moved to Harrisburg in Poinsett County, Arkansas by 1870. John Perry Phillips appears to be the son of Joseph Phillips born 1811 Union County, SC (wife Nancy BYRD) which is tucked in between York and Spartanburg. John first married Frances WARD in 1861 and had several children. When he married Caroline, S. B. DURHAM posted the bond and William BYRD performed the ceremony. The combination of these names connects two locations (as posted before) for a probable "acquaintance" between the family of William A. & Fidelia Dover and John Dover and his remaining family. One other thing going on in Blount County, Alabama .... William A. Dover and Bailey Dover, along with Lucinda put up property for sale on the same date, December 26, 1859. I suspect that Bailey and Lucinda were living very near William A. Dover. Did Anderson Dover know John Dover in Cherokee County, Georgia? Possibly so. Were they related? Don't know. John Dover had a John DURHAM living right next door to him in or near Canton, Georgia. I wonder if DURHAM in Cherokee County, Georgia is a connection in Blount County, Alabama? I notice that DURHAM is connected with William A. DOVER who was living next door to Joseph PHILLIPS. I also notice that Jesse Green mentions the DURHAM's in his 1912 autobiography and further that there is a DURHAM connection with the kids of Larkin Calloway Dover son of Anderson DOVER. Jesse GREEN's family was virtually next door to William A. Dover in Blount County, Alabama. Any of our Anderson DOVER descendants have DURHAM in their lines? Also throw out WALLS, which "could be" a WALLACE line that is reported as having connections with DOVER and CROSS and BASS. I have a WALLS connection mid 1870's in Arkansas. How about WITT? The PHILLIPS in Union County, South Carolina also appear to have connections in both Spartanburg and possibly York. There is an unconnected PHILLIPS in this area that has a MULLINAX marriage, same line as FJD's wife. Thomas CROSS, I think, was in Spartanburg before going to Pendleton. Dennis

    2. <<Also from the Rabun Co. 1840 census were: Frederick Dover with 6 males under 20, 1 over 20 (would that be Frederick?). Living beside him is: Bailey Dover with 1 male up to 50 years (Bailey?) and 1 female between 50-60, 1 female 20-30, and 1 female 40-50. Several houses away was another Bailey Dover - in house is 1 male up 20-30 years, and 1 female under 5 years, and 1 female 20-30 years.>> Janelle, this one is "big." Did you see an original record which showed another Bailey Dover living near the elder Bailey in Rabun or was it a transcription you saw? I've seen the 1840 Rabun census on microfilm. It's a weird first name but appears to be RIAL. That name never shows up before or after 1840. A couple of us with Buncombe roots wonder if it's ROYAL ... there was one. Here's something else from Habersham which probably also related to Rabun County: Index to Georgia Poor School & Academy Records, 1826-1850, Image 12 dated 1834: Ava Dover, Bailey Dover, John Dover, Leander Dover, Liney Dover & Cassy Dover Poor schools were "public schools." There's at least four names here I don't connect with anyone and three which are very common given names in my family ... Bailey, John and Leander. This Bailey is either my Bailey born 1817 in North Carolina or he's yet a fourth Bailey. The third Bailey was the son of Frederick and Margaret Dover from Buncombe who I suspect was living next door to the elder Bailey in Rabun who was born abt. 1792 SC and who WAS in Buncombe before going to Rabun. I'm tempted to blurt out a very weak theory, but won't now. Francis J. Dover had a daughter named Susan who married a John W. GUNTER. I can't prove who it is, but there was a John W. GUNTER living next door to Bailey Dover (the elder), Frederick Dover and Rial/Bailey Dover in 1840 Rabun County. I've learned the hard way not to believe in coincidences until they are proven :-) A comment on transcription. My Bailey Dover was in Poinsett County, Arkansas in 1870. Every published transcription shows him as KERY. The microfilm comes off at best as KERY. It is Bailey Appleton Dover by a variety of proven records. Think Marjorie on our list is about the only other family researcher who has spent time chasing my Bailey's father John who was in Cherokee County, Georgia by 1836. Can't explain it but think my John got into Georgia earlier than it appears. The record I think Janelle also posted: Dover, Bailey, 2nd Lieutenant Cherokee County (old Cherokee before the Removal?), April 12, 1835. If that's my Bailey he would have been 22 years old. Can't be a 42 year old Bailey the elder (that's a question) and certainly not Bailey #3 at 4 years old. I accept the idea that officers were appointed politically in the county militia's (they all had one) so this could be Bailey the elder who was a circuit court judge in Rabun. There's more I'll throw out later. Dennis

    2. In a message dated 7/4/99 11:23:04 AM Pacific Daylight Time, Cloversc@aol.com writes: << Robert S. Dover m. 10/21/1866 to Mary Maxwell Inglis births: William Henry Dover 3/26/1869 Edward Mortimer Dover 11/24/1872 Harvey Alexander Dover 8/16/1874 >> Robert S. DOVER should be Robert Short Dover, son of Jarrett Nelson Dover and Matilda M. Goodson said by some to be the son of Francis J. Dover. Jesse Green said in his 1912 autobiography that Francis J. Dover (referred to as Frank) "had six boys to wit: Johnson, NELSON, Benson, Anderson, Simpson and Thompson." My notes show that Robert & Mary Maxwell Inglis Dover also had children named Charlie, Eliza and Mariah. Wonder why the Bible record would not show those names? Mariah was apparently married to William Thomas Dover. Eliza was apparently married to a Ben Scott. I don't have anything on Charlie. Janelle brought up something else pretty interesting today which I'll respond to because it might have something to do with my family. Happy 4th ... let's remember all those who served in or supported the Revolution .... Francis, Joshua, Zephaniah and John and ? I can't find the reference to quote from, but a recent notice says that somebody recently found "boxes" of old military pension claims that nobody knew existed that go back to the Revolution. Them boxes sure got moved around a lot! Dennis

    2. Again from the DAR files in the GA Archives. I didn't copy all the names that weren't Dovers as there were a number of Inglis and Schmidts in the transcription from the Bible. Place in GA unknown. The Bible owner was Maria Inglis and at the time of trascription was in the possession of Mary Inglis Dover. Robert S. Dover m. 10/21/1866 to Mary Maxwell Inglis births: William Henry Dover 3/26/1869 Edward Mortimer Dover 11/24/1872 Harvey Alexander Dover 8/16/1874 As given in the document this Inglis family had connections to the Schmidts of Charleston SC. Hope some of these bits and pieces help a few Dovers.....Janelle Dixon

    2. I copied this information from DAR files in the GA Archives. It is from the Bible of Jason A. Dover: Jason A. Dover m 12/9/1841 Habersham GA (wife not given and I couldn't tell if he married in Habersham or it meant something else) births Jason A. Dover 2/9/1823 Hillary J. b. 10/23/1843 Emily Malinda b. 3/10/1844 Martha b. 9/1/1846 Mary Carline b. 2/9/1851 Clearsa E. Scoggs b. 7/30/1850 Mary Carline died 2/14/1860 The information did not give any relationships of these people and it would seem strange if all were Jason's since there is not 9 months between Hillary and Emily Malinda, unless one of these dates is wrong. The bible information was a transcription so that is possible. Janelle

Nancy Luvena Dover married James W. Henson December 13, 1876 in Wayne County, TN. (child: James Thomas David Henson). Nancy was born June 7, 1858 in Talladega, Talladega County, AL and died June 12, 1925 in Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas. It only listed the father of Nancy which was David Dover, Sr. born 1814 in S.C., and died abt. 1870. Hope this helps. Seraphine Dover Williamson

    3. Probably a duplicate, but maybe there is some little something that was overlooked. The one that always gets me is the Fidelia. I wonder if this is my Fidelia??? She would be 29, but the place is wrong, unless she was in Buncombe Co, N.C. in 1861.Also, maybe this is the streatch during which she had no children according to my records beteeen 1859-1866, if this is the same lady. Wonder if this is her??? Also, can Fidelia be a male name for that time period, or is it specifically female? But then there is the possible 2nd marriage in 1887 . She also had children after this possible marriage by William Alfred Dover, in 1897, who was her first husband . Wonder if there were two Fidelias? Maybe a surname and a married name?? I don't think the same lady would be married to two different men, and have children by the first one and married to the 2nd one at the same time. "We've come a long way Baby" as they say, but I don't think that far yet at this time period. Like I said it always baffles me. Anybody got any ideas?? All you have to do is go to the site and click on the "Whats New" link at this addy: http://www.familysearch.org/. Then on the next page click on the free download of Personal Ancestral 4.0. It is pretty self explanatory from there. It is a short download and works great. I downloaded it just to see what it was like. Looks pretty easy to use so far too. Just thought I would pass the info along. For those of you I am sending this to, who don't know what this is, it is a type of software to use to create a family file for genealogy. 3. Hello Cousin Seraphine, Your line came to me via the DOVER-L list. There was a few differences in what I already had for your line (also from the list.) For instance, I had Robert Lewis Dover born Jan. 20, 1852. I changed it to 1854 like you had listed. Since he was YOUR ggrandfather, I figured your date was probably the correct one. Then I moved some children around to make them coincide with the Mothers as listed on your list. I hope that was right! My line is through: Francis J. Dover (Does the J. really stand for Johnson?); Anderson Dover; Anderson Mansel Dover; Lula Jane Dover; Thelma Beatrice Lindsey (my Mother); Loumelia Jane Morton (Me) married to Van Calvin Ellis. If you want more of my line just let me know and I will get it to you some way -- e-mail or snail-mail. So far, I haven't mastered the art of sending large files via e-mail. I assume it has to be done in Parts, but how do I know how much I can send in one part and how to divide it. I do, however, know how to run off a copy and put it in an envelope and send it by snail-mail. Just let me know. I could also run off a copy of what I have of your line now and be sure that it is correct. Cousin Lou Morton Ellis (a 71 year old Gramma)

    2. Some PHILLIPS info from both Terry and a new cousin is fascinating. In part because people in that information are found at two different locations with DOVER families at both locations in Blount County, Alabama. I think of these locations as John DOVER's property just west of Snead Crossroads and east of there near the Byrd Cemetery. I'm guessing 5-6 miles on the present day main road. The census indexes on CD for 1860 Blount are missing names. One of importance is H. H. GREEN two doors from William & Fidelia DOVER. This connects with the Jesse GREEN autobiography posted several months ago. Henry Green and William Dover are brothers-in-law from William Green and Anderson Dover from Cherokee County, Georgia. William Green's wife was Hannah Dover brother to William A. Dover and children of Anderson and Jane CROSS DOVER. John Perry PHILLIPS who married Bailey's daughter Caroline Malinda DOVER should pop up on the 1860 census with or next to his father Joseph PHILLIPS and William A. DOVER. This suggests that this PHILLIPS family knew both Dover families as is supported by the probable first marriage record of John Perry PHILLIPS. While John DOVER and Bailey DOVER cannot be found in any 1860 census, they were property owners in these same specific areas about 5-6 miles apart. Both John DOVER and Anderson DOVER were in 1840 Cherokee County, Georgia. Interesting that Joseph PHILLIPS in Blount County is supposed to have a brother Isaac Phillips in 1840 Forsyth County, Georgia. That Isaac PHILLIPS was a neighbor of Jesse PONDER who was in York, whose brother and probable father were in Buncombe County, NC and has a DOVER grandson married to a Malinda DOVER whose father was a Baptist preacher and who lived (Jesse) in Habersham County, Georgia. This same PONDER/DOVER line has a PIERSON/PEARSON connection from Lincoln County, NC and a reference in the PONDER family history to an older DOVER during the battle of Kings Mountain during the Revolution. These same PONDER descendants were in Randolph Co., Talladega Co. and Winston Co., Alabama. This PHILLIPS line in Blount County is supposed to have come from Union County, South Carolina which is right next door to York and Spartanburg.

    3. Whether John Jr. or John Sr. is David's father is still a question in my mind. My guess is that John Jr. was the father to both William and David (the 1820 Buncombe census fits both ages), and there is some evidence that David and William were in Carroll at the same time. We're still looking for that One fact! >>> <Rootsswh@aol.com> 06/24/99 07:38pm >>> In a message dated 6/24/99 3:48:43 PM Central Daylight Time, SSukiennik@AOL.COM writes: << Subj: Re: [DOVER-L] Re: DOVER-D Digest V99 #173 -Reply Date: 6/24/99 3:48:43 PM Central Daylight Time From: SSukiennik@AOL.COM To: DOVER-L@rootsweb.com The AL IGI has an Able Dover md to Martha Emily Strickland that was living in Clay Co, AL ca 1880. Is this the A B Dover that is being discussed? Sharon S >> Sharon, I think someone has fed the wrong information into the IGI. I have been through all the Clay Co, AL census from 1870 through 1920. This Able Dover has to be my G Grandpa, John Abel Dover, who married Martha Emily SHADDIX, not Strickland, on 26 Aug 1865, in Talladega Co, AL (before Clay Co was formed). They were living in Winston Co in 1870, and back in Clay Co in 1880. However, they did not have a male child born in Feb 1872. They DID have a daughter born in Jan 1872. There was NO Able Dover listed. I was not aware of any other Dover's in Winston Co in the 1870's other than David Sr, David Jr, and John Abel, so I thank Marjorie Stansel for her info about Benjamin Wiley Dover. Perhaps A.B. does belong to him. I finally found my 1880 census of Winston Co. I listed only David Dover Jr. David Dover Jr didn't list a male child with initials A.B. And, I don't remember now whether I checked for any other Dover's in the county at that time. Therefore, I don't know whether Benjamin Wiley Dover was on the census for 1880 or not. After checking again with Marjorie Stansel's notes that she sent to me some months ago (still not in the computer - I'm slow), it would appear that David Sr, and William are probably brothers, and would explain Frank (Francis) Dover's presence in Clay Co, AL in 1880 (families seem to follow each other around). Marjorie, have you determined yet whether John Sr or John Jr is father to William or David? Sherry ==== DOVER Mailing List ==== The Dover mailing list, home page. It's still confusing in Buncombe and I'm completely open because I also have a lot at stake and a number of later coincidences in Alabama. Another part of the hunches. John Dover b abt 1793 with proven son Bailey b 1817 NC has the Buncombe stamp. If Bailey was born in Buncombe in 1817 that should make him the son of John Dover Jr. in 1820 ... unless Bailey's father left Buncombe before 1830. John Jr. has two sons in Bailey's age group in 1820. I've always thought William was the best candidate as the other son of John Dover Jr. and brother to Bailey. I can't any other Dover in this age group.
