Great job with the chronology Marjorie. Because there has been some confusion in the past about Sherod J Dovers role at the Alamo, I thought perhaps the following might clarify some of it. 1830 Rutherford CO NC census, Sherwood Devin/Dover age 20/30 with a female age 20/30.  This appears to be Sherod J Dover with a wife...no marriage record found), but by about 1832/1833, Sherod J Dover became the father of a baby girt, Eliza Ann. Not sure what happened to the adult female from the 1830 census. In 1834, Sherrod J. Dover married Frances Hammonds in Marengo County, AL. Date would have been sometime around the end of the month. The bond is dated Jan 24th and the license is dated Jan 27th. Apparently they started the trip to Texas right away because depositions taken after his death place them in Bastrop CO TX in the fall of 1834. Depositions also say that Sherod J had a child by his first wife.  Frances was wife #2. By 1835, Frances Hammonds Dover had left Sherod J Dover and Eliza Ann and was living with another man. Sherod was in the Army and the very young Eliza was living with the family of Jonathan Burleson. in Bastrop CO. It has been passed down in some stories that he was killed during the Battle of the Alamo.  While it's true that he was killed at Bexar, it was probably just before the Siege of Bexar when immigrant settlers and a group of Tejanos fought for and took control of the Alamo. That 5 day battle was in Dec 1835. Sherod J Dover was shot in the back and killed by a soldier from his own company in November 1835...the Battle for the Alamo (the one with Crockett, Bowie and Travis...minus John Wayne) was a 13 day battle ending March 6, 1836. The Battle of San Jacinto followed along with Texas Independence.  Eliza Ann Dover was his only child and so his Dover line ended with her. Because Sherod was in the area before the Republic, he or his heirs were entitled to land..a league and a labor in addition to 640 acres awarded because he died while in the Army of Texas. Much of this information can be found in Texas Supreme Court records that were the result of Frances Hammonds Dover's attempt to inherit the land from Sherod J's estate. Sherod's name has at times been included with the men who fought at the Alamo, but many of the names have since been disproved and removed from plaques on the walls. Don't believe the name of Eliza's mother has ever been found. bj

They were living next door to Michael Martin / Morning Manning who was next door to Manning Martin / Bershiber Dover. All the named Martins were related. Would have to do some digging to be positive, but off the top of my head I'm thinking that Michael Martin was the father of Manning & Jemima Martin. Maybe Dennis can clarify this? Sherrod J Dover does not show up on his own ("Sherwood" Dover) until 1830 Rutherford Co, NC as 20-30 born 1800-1810 and married with no children. The 1820 York listing shows 16-26 born 1794-1804 and married with a male child born 1810 - 1820 (child was Morgan Dover b ca 1819) which would fit with the known information for Shaderick Dover (b ca 1795). Marie, what follows below is a condensed listing of names of places (limited primarily to North and South Carolina, Georgia, and a smathering of Tennessee references) where Dovers were counted or appear in the Court records. Several of us have debated over the name under Zeph and John in the 1790 census. It is indexed in Ancestry as Jas. or James. On the same page with this Jas., there are many males named James where James is written out, but there are also a couple where it's written Jas. I check the following census record (1800), and the males where Jas. was written all appear to be James (I did not check every single one, but checked several). Francis Dover should be in York around that time frame also since he "proved" a deed in York in 1788, although he had claimed land in Lincoln, NC in 1784. Also in 1788, there is mention of a lawsuit by John Dover against Jacob Huffstetler (Hostitler). In 1785 John Dover supplied the militia with forage for use in the Revolution; a Joshua Dower also had a claim for funds. We also know there was a John Dover and Hezekiah Dover in Lincoln, NC in 1795. I haven't located Hezekiah on any census record until 1810. We know that Joshua Dover was in Greenville in 1790 and that he was in Burke County in the late 1790's. He's missing from a number of later census records. In 1800, there is a John Dover in Buncombe County, NC with 2 sons. There is also a John Dover in Pendleton, SC with 4 sons, as well as Zephaniah with 2 sons and Elijah Dover (no sons) near him. John Dover purchased land in Buncombe in 1803, but the same year a John Dover bought land in Pendleton from someone who lived in Buncombe (hard to figure that out). Francis may be on the record as a Francis Davis. Hezekiah is where? In 1807, John Dover of Buncombe sold 50 acres and signed his name with three crosses (+++). To further confuse things, an Abraham Dover also purchased land in Buncombe County the same year. Also in 1807, a Richard Dover witnesses a transaction in Edgefield. In 1808, an Abel Dover (potentially the same person as Abraham?) sold land in Buncombe to Thomas or Thompson Dover (who is never found in any other record). His deed is witnessed by the same Arch Reynolds as the John Dover Deed and the Abraham Dover deed. In 1809, Elijah Dover witnesses a deed in Pendleton SC. Does that mean he may be tied to Francis who had land in Pendleton? In 1810, Hezekiah Dover is in Lincoln, NC (indexed as Hezekiah Cover). In 1810, there is a William Dover in Edgefield, in 1811, there is a George Dover(s) in Edgefield; a John Dover and Francis Dover appear in Pendleton, SC; in York, there are John, Elijah and Zephaniah. In Bertie, NC, there is a John Douers. Also in 1810, Francis Dover loses his land in Pendleton, SC. Sometime around 1812, the Richard Dover in Edgefield dies and his heirs are mentioned in a court document. Dear Dennis, I have been watching with great interest all of the correspondence about the DNA test results. I am descended from Elijah Dover and Martha Duckett. I do not have any direct male siblings, so I have not been able to participate in the tests. I have not seen any reference to Elijah Dover, only Elijah Benson Dover. Have I missed something? You said in the past that there was a possibility that Elijah might be related to your line in some way; perhaps one of four brothers, all sons of John Dover. I get the feeling John Dover is out of the picture now. Does this change your theory about the four brothers? I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks. Marge Dover Bonifield

Marge, Some of the test results are unbelievable from the research side. Anything is possible at this point, but to try and give you my opinion about your questions or comments ... there are living male descendants of Elijah & Martha Duckett Dover. I've been in contact several times, but no reply. That Elijah Benson Dover matches up with one of those four "brothers" in Buncombe (Frederick & Margaret) is one of the major surprises of all time. I think/thought that my John was one of the four, maybe not now, but still related. Jeptha has no known living descendants. I think the elder John Dover in 1820 and 1830 Buncombe has a lot to do with some or all of the four Dover's living side by side in the 1830 census ... and I suspect now he is probably more a major part of the story/answer than ever before. Somehow have to get some DNA results for Elijah & Martha Duckett Dover. I am descended from Elijah Dover and Martha Duckett. I do not have any direct male siblings, so I have not been able to participate in the tests. I have not seen any reference to Elijah Dover, only Elijah Benson Dover. Have I missed something? You said in the past that there was a possibility that Elijah might be related to your line in some way; perhaps one of four brothers, all sons of John Dover. I get the feeling John Dover is out of the picture now. Does this change your theory about the four brothers? I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks. The DNA info is hard to read and understand so what follows are the matches that indicate the relationships with my John Dover with others but showing the proven ancestor. Some of these individual tests go back even further than shown, particularly to Francis J. Dover born 1760 NC. The key differences are the changes that can take place with the 25 marker test which is a refined test. Possibly related on the 12 marker went to some related on the 25 marker. I went from a 95% connection with William A. Dover on the 12 marker to a 99.9% on the 25 marker test. Hope this helps ... and encourages others to take the tests. Happy New Year to all who have taken the journey back in time to connect with their ancestors. Seasons Greetings to all. Although I have been excited about participating in this project, I must confess that I've been busy writing a dissertation lately so I've not read any of the literature. So I'm afraid I don't really understand my results at present although I can see there seems to be a broad correlation with many of the others. If someone with greater knowledge can provide any explanation or comments I should be most grateful. I'm quite happy to try further tests. Is the 25 marker the best to go for? I see there's talk of a 37 - would that be better or more informative? Suggestions welcome. My immediate family is from London. My GF, Joseph James Dover, was born there in 1881. My GGF, John Dover proved extremely difficult to track down although I knew he was married to Eliza Eagle in London in 1865 and born in c1838. Due to the mechanisation of agriculture and the growth of industry there were large migrations from the countryside to the towns in the mid 19th century. So finding my GGF's birth took a great deal of searching, but I finally found him in Oxfordshire. It is on the borders of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire where my Dover family have their roots. My GGGF, Thomas Dover was born there in 1800 and married Jane Shepherd. My GGGGF was also Thomas Dover, b c1763 and married to Jane Ashby. It may be posible to go back further but this is as yet unproven. Incidentally, two of my GF's siblings emigrated to the the US in the early 20th century. One, John (Jack) Dover ended up in California, via Canada, and had descendents who I have not traced. The other married in the UK and emigrated with her husband to the Chicago area - I jam in touch with her granddaughter. Hope this helps. Please feel free to ask any questions.
