Great job with the chronology Marjorie. Because there has been some confusion in the past about Sherod J Dovers role at the Alamo, I thought perhaps the following might clarify some of it. 1830 Rutherford CO NC census, Sherwood Devin/Dover age 20/30 with a female age 20/30. This appears to be Sherod J Dover with a wife...no marriage record found), but by about 1832/1833, Sherod J Dover became the father of a baby girt, Eliza Ann. Not sure what happened to the adult female from the 1830 census. In 1834, Sherrod J. Dover married Frances Hammonds in Marengo County, AL. Date would have been sometime around the end of the month. The bond is dated Jan 24th and the license is dated Jan 27th. Apparently they started the trip to Texas right away because depositions taken after his death place them in Bastrop CO TX in the fall of 1834. Depositions also say that Sherod J had a child by his first wife. Frances was wife #2. By 1835, Frances Hammonds Dover had left Sherod J Dover and Eliza Ann and was living with another man. Sherod was in the Army and the very young Eliza was living with the family of Jonathan Burleson. in Bastrop CO. It has been passed down in some stories that he was killed during the Battle of the Alamo. While it's true that he was killed at Bexar, it was probably just before the Siege of Bexar when immigrant settlers and a group of Tejanos fought for and took control of the Alamo. That 5 day battle was in Dec 1835. Sherod J Dover was shot in the back and killed by a soldier from his own company in November 1835...the Battle for the Alamo (the one with Crockett, Bowie and Travis...minus John Wayne) was a 13 day battle ending March 6, 1836. The Battle of San Jacinto followed along with Texas Independence. Eliza Ann Dover was his only child and so his Dover line ended with her. Because Sherod was in the area before the Republic, he or his heirs were entitled to land..a league and a labor in addition to 640 acres awarded because he died while in the Army of Texas. Much of this information can be found in Texas Supreme Court records that were the result of Frances Hammonds Dover's attempt to inherit the land from Sherod J's estate. Sherod's name has at times been included with the men who fought at the Alamo, but many of the names have since been disproved and removed from plaques on the walls. Don't believe the name of Eliza's mother has ever been found. bj

Marjorie, I think that the 1820 "Shared" Dover in York Co, SC is more likely Shaderick Dover who was md to Jemima Martin. They were living next door to Michael Martin / Morning Manning who was next door to Manning Martin / Bershiber Dover. All the named Martins were related. Would have to do some digging to be positive, but off the top of my head I'm thinking that Michael Martin was the father of Manning & Jemima Martin. Maybe Dennis can clarify this? Sherrod J Dover does not show up on his own ("Sherwood" Dover) until 1830 Rutherford Co, NC as 20-30 born 1800-1810 and married with no children. The 1820 York listing shows 16-26 born 1794-1804 and married with a male child born 1810 - 1820 (child was Morgan Dover b ca 1819) which would fit with the known information for Shaderick Dover (b ca 1795). Shaderick Dover remained in the York Co, SC area. Sharon S

I'm sure it will be a great help. I'd like to add: David Dover married Sarah Sparks 6 December 1836 in Carroll Co., GA Sarah was daughter of David and Permelia (Medlock) Sparks. Her father was the David Sparks who lost his land in Cherokee Co., GA in 1834. <In 1837, David Dover first appears in the records, purchasing two tracts of land from Jonathan Sparks.> I'm fairly sure this was another son of David Sparks and brother-in-law of David Dover. David Dover, Jonathan and David Sparks all moved to AL. Jonathan married Permelia Jackson. Rosemary Hollis
Marie, what follows below is a condensed listing of names of places (limited primarily to North and South Carolina, Georgia, and a smathering of Tennessee references) where Dovers were counted or appear in the Court records. Several of us have debated over the name under Zeph and John in the 1790 census. It is indexed in Ancestry as Jas. or James. On the same page with this Jas., there are many males named James where James is written out, but there are also a couple where it's written Jas. I check the following census record (1800), and the males where Jas. was written all appear to be James (I did not check every single one, but checked several). Francis Dover should be in York around that time frame also since he "proved" a deed in York in 1788, although he had claimed land in Lincoln, NC in 1784. Also in 1788, there is mention of a lawsuit by John Dover against Jacob Huffstetler (Hostitler). In 1785 John Dover supplied the militia with forage for use in the Revolution; a Joshua Dower also had a claim for funds. We also know there was a John Dover and Hezekiah Dover in Lincoln, NC in 1795. I haven't located Hezekiah on any census record until 1810. We know that Joshua Dover was in Greenville in 1790 and that he was in Burke County in the late 1790's. He's missing from a number of later census records. In 1800, there is a John Dover in Buncombe County, NC with 2 sons. There is also a John Dover in Pendleton, SC with 4 sons, as well as Zephaniah with 2 sons and Elijah Dover (no sons) near him. John Dover purchased land in Buncombe in 1803, but the same year a John Dover bought land in Pendleton from someone who lived in Buncombe (hard to figure that out). Francis may be on the record as a Francis Davis. Hezekiah is where? In 1807, John Dover of Buncombe sold 50 acres and signed his name with three crosses (+++). To further confuse things, an Abraham Dover also purchased land in Buncombe County the same year. Also in 1807, a Richard Dover witnesses a transaction in Edgefield. In 1808, an Abel Dover (potentially the same person as Abraham?) sold land in Buncombe to Thomas or Thompson Dover (who is never found in any other record). His deed is witnessed by the same Arch Reynolds as the John Dover Deed and the Abraham Dover deed. In 1809, Elijah Dover witnesses a deed in Pendleton SC. Does that mean he may be tied to Francis who had land in Pendleton? In 1810, Hezekiah Dover is in Lincoln, NC (indexed as Hezekiah Cover). In 1810, there is a William Dover in Edgefield, in 1811, there is a George Dover(s) in Edgefield; a John Dover and Francis Dover appear in Pendleton, SC; in York, there are John, Elijah and Zephaniah. In Bertie, NC, there is a John Douers. Also in 1810, Francis Dover loses his land in Pendleton, SC. Sometime around 1812, the Richard Dover in Edgefield dies and his heirs are mentioned in a court document. In 1812-1813, a Richard Dover and Joshua Dover appear in the marriage records of Roane County, TN. In 1814, a John Dover buys land on Newfound Creek in Buncombe. In 1816, Bailey Dover buys land in Buncombe on Lee's Mill Creek. In 1818, a John Dover, Jr. is mentioned in the will of Isaac Rice in Roane County, TN. In 1819, Hezekiah Dover and Michael Dover are in trouble in York, SC, tying at least Hezekiah with one other Dover male in the records. In 1819, Celia Dover marries Jess Cross in Habersham County, GA. In 1820, in Buncombe County, NC, there is John Dover (Sr.), John Jr. and Bailey Dover. Francis Dover is in Habersham County, GA census records, and Anderson Dover appears on a jury. In 1820, Samuel Dover appears in Edgefield, SC, apparently near neighbors with ties to William and Richard Dover. William Dover is also in Edgefield. In 1820, Morgan Dover shows up on the records of Pendleton, SC. and Shared (Sherrod) appears in York, SC. Also in York are Zephaniah, Sr. and Jr., Frederick (hereafter called York Frederick) and Hezekiah, apparently next door (as census takers handle these things). In 1822, Johnston or Johnson Dover buys and sells land in Habersham County, GA. In 1823, Francis Dover buys land in Habersham County, Ga (subsequent purchases not noted here). In 1823, Simpson Dover marries Lucy Dooly in Habersham County, GA. In 1824, Johnson and Anderson Dover each buy separate parcels in Habersham County, Ga. In 1825, one of the John Dovers buys 100 acres of land on Newfound Creek in Buncombe (deed witnessed by John Frisby). In 1825, Bailey Dover buys land in Rabun County, Georgia (subsequent purchases are not noted here). In 1826, Lawson Dover buys land in Habersham County, Ga. In 1829, Anderson Dover buys and sells land in Habersham County, Georgia, and Francis Dover sells land to Simpson Dover in Habersham. In 1830, Francis, Johnson, Anderson and Simpson appear on the census records of Habersham County, Ga. Lawson is probably already in Harris County, GA. In Buncombe, John, Sr., John Jr. Frederick(hereafter called Buncombe Frederick), Jeptha, and Elijah appear on the census records in Buncombe, apparently next to each other. Buncombe Frederick Dover buys land in Buncombe County the same year; his deed is witnessed by Josiah Frisby. In Rutherford County, "York" Frederick Dover and Michael Dover appear on the same page (448, indexed as Dovan and Dover; Hezekiah appears indexed as Hezekiah David (p.537); Sherrod Dover appears as Sherwood Devin (p. 524). Also in 1830, a Hugh Dover and a John Dover appear in Anderson, SC. In York, SC in 1830 (census) are Zephaniah, Sr., Zephaniah, Jr., Elijah, John, James, Asil and Shaderick Dover. In 1831, Sherrod Dover and some other individuals purchase land near White Oak Mountain in Rutherford, NC. In 1832 in Bledsoe County, TN, an 81 year old Joshua Dover makes his Revolutionary War Affidavit. Francis Dover makes his affidavit in Habersham County, Georgia the same year; his brother Hezekiah affirms the affidavit. In 1832, Harriett Dover marries Alfred Hicks in Habersham County, GA; Susan Dover marries John Gunter; Hannah Dover marries W.W. Green (see deeds concerning Anderson and Allen Dover). In 1833, Simpson Dover is mentioned in a suit in Cherokee County, GA. In 1834, Jeptha Dover sells land in Buncombe County (that he doesn't officially purchase until 1836 from John Dover). The Frisby line is mentioned in the deed. Jeptha is later tied by court documents to Bailey Dover in Rabun County, Ga. In 1834, Sherrod J. Dover maries Frances Hammonds in Marengo County, AL. In 1834, a John Dover is the highest bidder for a piece of property in Cherokee County, Georgia. This land was forfeited by David Sparks. Also in 1834, Frederick Dover (from Rutherford) appears in the census records of Lumpkin County, Georgia with 10 people in the household. In 1835, a Bailey Dover appears as a 2d Lt. in the militia records of Cherokee County, Ga. In 1835, Jacob Dover marries Rebecca Weaver in Wilkinson County, GA (who is Jacob?). In 1836, Sherrod appears in Bexar County, TX (Alamo). In 1836, John Dover, Sr. sells 100 acres to Jeptha Dover (land he sold in 1834). In 1836, a John Dover officially is deeded the land he purchased in Cherokee County in 1834. In 1837, David Dover first appears in the records, purchasing two tracts of land from Jonathan Sparks. In 1837, Francis Marion Dover appears on the jury list for Gilmer County, Georgia. In 1837, John Dover (Jr. or Sr.?) sells 102.5 acres to Jeptha Dover (Buncombe). Buncombe Frederick Dover sells his land to William Martin, brother to the Philip Martin who witnessed the Bailey Dover Buncombe deed. Frederick's deed mentions the line of John Dover. In 1837, John Dover is on the jury list for Cherokee County, Georgia. Also in Cherokee County, Georgia, Allen Dover witnesses a deed for William W. Green. In 1837, "York" Frederick Dover purchases two tracts of land in Lumpkin County (formerly Habersham). In 1837, Elijah B. Dover marries Anny Goodson in Habersham County, GA; Herty Dover marries Charlie Shirley. In 1838, Anderson Dover purchases land in Cherokee County, GA from William W. Green; the same year, he sells land in Habersham County, Ga. In 1838, Morgan and Mary Dover sell land in York, SC. Census Records for 1840 show the following: John Dover, Bibb County, AL Thompson Dover, Greene County, AR John Dover, Carroll County, GA David Dover (Daver), Carroll County, GA Anderson Dover, Cherokee County, GA John Dover, Cherokee County, GA Francis M. Dover, Gilmer County, GA James Dover, Gilmer County, GA Thomas Dover, Glynn County, GA (I've ignored for now the other references to this Dover) Samuel Dover, Gwinnett County, GA Francis J. Dover, Habersham County, GA Johnson Dover, Habersham County, GA E.B. Dover, Habersham County, GA Hezekiah Dover (Douse in index), Habersham County, GA L. Dover (Lawson?), Harris County, GA "York" Frederick Dover, Lumpkin County, GA Michael Dover, Lumpkin County, GA Morgan Dover, Murray County, GA Bailey Dover, Rabun County, GA "Buncombe" Frederick Dover, Rabun County, GA Rial Dover, Rabun County, GA E. "Elijah" Dover, Buncombe County, NC Jesse (Jeptha) Dover, Buncombe County, NC Hugh Dover, Anderson, SC Asa Dover, York, SC Elijah Dover, York, SC James Dover, York, SC John Dover, York, SC Martin Dover, York, SC Morgan Dover, York, SC Shaderick (Shadock) Dover, York, SC Joshua Dover, Carroll County, TN John C. Dover, Fayette County, TN Elizabeth Dover, Robertson County, TN Macey Dover, Shelby County, TN In 1839, Mary Dover marries Valentine Burnett in Carroll County, GA. In 1840, Sarah Ann Dover marries James Holcomb in Carroll County, GA. In 1840, John Dover sells land in Carroll County, Georgia to Samuel Landrum. Presumably, this same John Dover takes out a marriage license to Elizabeth Allen. In 1841, a William Dover appears on the Carroll County, Ga. Tax Digest. In 1842, a John Dover and a William Dover appear on the Carroll County, Ga. Tax Digest. In 1842, a John Dover sells his Cherokee County, Ga. land. In 1842, a John S. Dover purchases land on Buffaloe Creek in York, SC. In 1842, my William Dover and Alanthey Chambers marry in Lumpkin County, GA. In 1843, Lawson Dover puts his land as collateral on a loan in Harris County, Georgia (next door to Carroll County). In 1843, Ann J. Dover marries Berry Green in Harris County, Ga. In 1844, Jarrett N. Nelson purchases two pieces of land in Habersham County, GA. In 1844, Viney Dover marries William Martin in Cherokee County, GA; Frances M. Dover marries David Moody in Cherokee County, GA. In 1844, Elizabeth Dover marries Samuel Glover in DeKalb County, GA. In 1844, Avey Dover marries Jasper Weaver in Habersham County, GA. In 1845, Allen Dover marries Mary Cloud in Cherokee County, GA. In 1845, Jarrett N. Dover marries Matilda Goodson in Habersham County, GA. In 1846, Mary Dover marries William F. Owens in Habersham County, GA. In 1847, Washington Dover purchases land in York County, SC. In 1848, William A. Dover marries Dilly Wilson in Murray County, GA; Anderson Dover marries Catherine Hancock; Henry S. Dover marries Amanda K. Hames; Arra Dover marries Oswell Wilson (1849); Elizabeth Stancell marries Campbell Dover (1850). In 1849, Buncombe Frederick sells land on Dick's Creek in Buncombe County, NC. Also, in 1849, my William Dover appears on the tax digest for Hall County, Georgia. In 1849, Linney Dover marries Cosby Anderson in Habersham County, GA. In 1850, my William Dover purchases land in Lumpkin County, GA. In 1850, Lawson Dover claims land in Tallapoosa County, AL. I'll stop without enumerating those in the 1850 census records. This is not an all inclusive listing. I've omitted deeds where an individual didn't change county boundaries. We don't have marriage records for many Dovers in NC and SC. Those would be most helpful. Marie & list. I find two Elijah Dovers in the 1850 census. One in Buncombe County, NC just as Marie says and the other in York County, SC. I am NOT sure it really is a male though. I only am sure of the name because of my Sessoms family. They write it the same way they do in this census where one of the s's looks like it could be an f or p. It took me a while to figure that one out. :-( I have never heard the name Cissaline. I think it MIGHT be what the name Cecil could have come from if it is a male name though. The family above is Plemmons and the family below looks to be Hutsel. By Elijah and Martha's names there is a check in the part where it signified married within the year. There are in several other families on the same page though and some only one spouse is checked so I am not sure that is what this really means here. Then next to Elijahs name there is a 4 in the slot for attended school within the year, and then a 2 in the slot where someone could not read or write. ============= The second Elijah's data looks like this: Source: 1850 Census York, York County, SC Ancestry Image 22 although it is indexed as being 21. Dear Denis, Thanks to your response re Elijah Dover's place in the Dover family picture. Hopefully someone from his and Martha Duckett's line will still sign up for the DNA tests. I will keep watching and hoping. Marge
Dear Dennis, I have been watching with great interest all of the correspondence about the DNA test results. I am descended from Elijah Dover and Martha Duckett. I do not have any direct male siblings, so I have not been able to participate in the tests. I have not seen any reference to Elijah Dover, only Elijah Benson Dover. Have I missed something? You said in the past that there was a possibility that Elijah might be related to your line in some way; perhaps one of four brothers, all sons of John Dover. I get the feeling John Dover is out of the picture now. Does this change your theory about the four brothers? I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks. Marge Dover Bonifield
Marge, Some of the test results are unbelievable from the research side. Anything is possible at this point, but to try and give you my opinion about your questions or comments ... there are living male descendants of Elijah & Martha Duckett Dover. I've been in contact several times, but no reply. That Elijah Benson Dover matches up with one of those four "brothers" in Buncombe (Frederick & Margaret) is one of the major surprises of all time. I think/thought that my John was one of the four, maybe not now, but still related. Jeptha has no known living descendants. I think the elder John Dover in 1820 and 1830 Buncombe has a lot to do with some or all of the four Dover's living side by side in the 1830 census ... and I suspect now he is probably more a major part of the story/answer than ever before. Somehow have to get some DNA results for Elijah & Martha Duckett Dover. The DNA info is hard to read and understand so what follows are the matches that indicate the relationships with my John Dover with others but showing the proven ancestor. Some of these individual tests go back even further than shown, particularly to Francis J. Dover born 1760 NC. The key differences are the changes that can take place with the 25 marker test which is a refined test. Possibly related on the 12 marker went to some related on the 25 marker. I went from a 95% connection with William A. Dover on the 12 marker to a 99.9% on the 25 marker test. Hope this helps ... and encourages others to take the tests. Happy New Year to all who have taken the journey back in time to connect with their ancestors. No matter who we all are or where we came from, I think we have all felt a deep sense of pride and satisfaction when tracing our family trees and uncovering some of the mysteries that have been buried for so long. I've connected with cousins on line that I didn't even know existed. Our modern day technology has allowed us to go so much further than one could have imagined, and these computers have led us all to one another. I hope this year is good to all of us and joins our hands together in our ancestral mission. Carolynn Inabnit, granddaughter of Willis Hanibal Dover, Lancaster, Ohio 1899

Seasons Greetings to all. Although I have been excited about participating in this project, I must confess that I've been busy writing a dissertation lately so I've not read any of the literature. So I'm afraid I don't really understand my results at present although I can see there seems to be a broad correlation with many of the others. If someone with greater knowledge can provide any explanation or comments I should be most grateful. I'm quite happy to try further tests. Is the 25 marker the best to go for? I see there's talk of a 37 - would that be better or more informative? Suggestions welcome. My immediate family is from London. My GF, Joseph James Dover, was born there in 1881. My GGF, John Dover proved extremely difficult to track down although I knew he was married to Eliza Eagle in London in 1865 and born in c1838. Due to the mechanisation of agriculture and the growth of industry there were large migrations from the countryside to the towns in the mid 19th century. So finding my GGF's birth took a great deal of searching, but I finally found him in Oxfordshire. It is on the borders of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire where my Dover family have their roots. My GGGF, Thomas Dover was born there in 1800 and married Jane Shepherd. My GGGGF was also Thomas Dover, b c1763 and married to Jane Ashby. It may be posible to go back further but this is as yet unproven. Incidentally, two of my GF's siblings emigrated to the the US in the early 20th century. One, John (Jack) Dover ended up in California, via Canada, and had descendents who I have not traced. The other married in the UK and emigrated with her husband to the Chicago area - I jam in touch with her granddaughter. Hope this helps. Please feel free to ask any questions. Best wishes Tony Dover Cheltenham, England
