This past summer, I found some more interesting court records in York Co. SC, such as the following: October term 1832. John McGill, Jiney Childers, Nancy Childers, Barsheba Martin, and Mannon Martin, and John Mullinax, Michael Martin bound in a case of petty larceny against Esther Dickson. True Bill (This one was in real bad shape...very fragile and faded.) July 27, 1839 Shadrac Dover assault on Esther A. Dickson. Flip side has Esther Dickson and Margaret Dickson. No Bill. (not much in this file.) July 1854 Michael Hambright accused Shadrick Dover of perjury in a militia election. Michael claimed Shad had been living in NC for the last 6 or 8 months. (Don't know the outcome, this one was in real bad shape.) Note: "Barsheba" Martin is possibly a daughter of Hezekiah Dover. The records I saw were originals and so were in various stages of readable. I believe this is one of the biggest research surprises ever. Joel Cloud that married Francis Marion Dover & Mary Bailey was living in the last household on Page 536 in 1830 Rutherford. At the top of the next page and the next door neighbor of Joel Cloud was Hezekiah Dover. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, January 10, 2004 12:38 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Dover] Shadericks In a message dated 1/10/2004 10:00:41 AM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: ------------------------------------------------ Page 537 Image 180 Hezekiah Dover 60-70 1760-1770 000200001-013001 Female 30-40 1790-1800 -- new & younger wife?? As I have said the relationships of this family are very complex as they md many cousins and people with the same surname that were related. These are the earliest Martin/Dover connections in the Michael Martin Jr family and who they were ------ NOTES 11/1999 I have been studying the Martin family and trying to decide on the easiest way to record what we need out of it, so that it isn't so confusing. This is coming from the book MARTIN'S by Jerry T Jones of Laurinburg, NC. This book is more that 10 yrs old and I am sure new stuff has been found since this printing, but I think the basics in this are pretty sound. I am NOT going to give all the of the child's children for all of these here. This is more to explain the relationship of the ones that are connected to the Dover names. Here's all of what I think is Shadrick's census and War 1812 info. His given name was never spelled the same way twice. Probably the only way to find a possible living male descendant is to track the sons/grandsons up to the 1930 census and hope there might be a Social Security application on file listing the names of parents that could tie down Shad's line. There has been much data posted to websites, LDS records and info shared among researchers over the years that were actually an assumption on someones part or a pure guess. Unfortunately as time goes on much of this undocumented and in many cases erroneous information is seen and believed by others who are not familiar with the research that has been done and just assume that if it's posted somewhere it's got to be true. Other than the fact that he is a documented brother of Francis J Dover, not much else is known about him except what is found in his court records -- he seems to have had a little problem with staying out of trouble over the years. Not one child has ever been documented as being his through all of the years of Dover research. As you can see, he always had a houseful of kids that have got to be out there somewhere. We are really hoping that the DNA results may help in making some of these connections of children to him. I'm NOT saying that all of the Dover men in the above were sons of Hezekiah Dover, but with the known information and locations at this time, they would have to be considered as possibilities. If you are a Dover male from one of these lines or know a Dover male that may be connected to any of these lines, it would be very beneficial to all of us if you would consider submitting a sample for DNA testing. This may be the only way to unravel some of these relationships at this point. We realize that this is not a cheap endeavor and the cost may prohibit some from participating. Perhaps if there are several on the list from the same Dover line you could get together and decide on a suitable donor and all contribute to having that person tested? That way the expense wouldn't be that much for each person and you could make sure that your Dover line is represented in the testing. A big THANK YOU to all that have participated so far. Sharon S
Thanks Dennis!

Marie, Thanks for the comment, but the truth is that at least 95% of what I have learned about the Dover family (all of them) has come from the Dover-L list and several of the list members who I have been fortunate and blessed to know even before Patricia Manson started the list. Being able to communicate was much more difficult before the internet came along. It's never been a quantity thing for participation but more the little things or pieces of the puzzle that I have come to realize are the most important. There's another warrant deed in York dated May 14, 1811 for 550 acres on Clarks Fork of Bullocks Creek near Wallaces land. This is the deed that shows Dover's Branch. BODDEN is a neighbor. I think this might be a location inside Kings Mountain near Brown's Mountain, which if true suggests that Dover's Branch may have been old John Dover's location (mill site). Dover's Branch is the northern end of Clarks Fork. I still don't see anything that suggests that this plat location is the same as the previous one mentioned with Dover's Land. -----Original Message----- From: Marjorie Stansel [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, January 09, 2004 3:25 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Dover] References to Dover in South Carolina Archives and History Index The following references appeared in a database search for South Carolina Archives and History (reached through the York County website). In a message dated 1/9/2004 10:55:53 AM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: > Obviously there's two Shad's because Morgan Dover in the deed is remembered > as Morgan Shade Dover ... from memory OK, Dennis, I'll see if I can explain this. There was a time, a number of years ago, based on what we knew at the time with limited census records and other data that I thought that Morgan Dover was the one that was md to Jemima Martin who was the d/o Michael Martin Jr (brother of Manning Martin md to Bershiber Dover). That was in conflict with the Shade Dover that was named in LDS records and also a Martin book written by Jerry Jones. I believe that where DD has the Morgan Shade Dover in his notes came from a combination of what probably should actually have read Morgan OR Shade Dover. Part of the problem back then was info that was given in the LDS records on some of this group that gave dates of birth which were way off the mark. Later down the line when we obtained more census records and were able to pin the son Morgan Dover's age down more, it turned out he was older than we had first thought and was actually living on his own in 1840 York Co. The thinking had been that in 1840 he was closer in age to Shaderick Dover which turned out wrong according to later census records. There was only one Shaderick Dover (b ca 1795) in York Co and only one Morgan Dover (b ca 1819) in York Co, SC. Another confusing point in the early thinking was the Shared Dover indexed in the 1820 York Co, SC census. There was a time when we weren't sure if that was Shaderick Dover or Sherod J Dover. That was pretty well defined when the census record and other records were found in Rutherford Co, NC in 1830. Sherod J's age in 1830 could not be the same as the "Shared" Dover in 1820 York. The 1820 census is listed in this order -- Manning Martin -- md to Bershiber Martin Michael Martin (Jr -- who would be the brother of Manning Martin) md to Mary Bolin Shared Dover -- Shaderick md to Jemima Martin who's father was Michael Martin Jr. This Martin family is a very complicated family to follow. They md many cousins and many people with the same surname who were all related. They also used the same first names over & over down the lines. I am going to include part of the notes that I did on this family 3 years ago after we had uncovered more information that changed the thinking on this family. Jerry Jones mentioned in these notes was the author of a book done on this Martin family. ***************************************** Shaderick Dover md to Jemima Martin Notes of Sharon Sukiennik << [email protected] >> 12/2000 (revised 1/2004) Dennis, I have gone back and taken a good look at this stuff since you sent the Morgan Dover data last night. I am more confused than ever. I know my reasoning for thinking that Shaderick was not the father of these kids and the one that was md to Jemima Martin -- for one, all the kids on the 1850 for him have nothing to do with any of Jemima's kids and the fact that 2 wives were named for him in military records and one was NOT named Jemima Martin. Another part of my reasoning was the fact that BOTH Morgan Dover and Shaderick were listed on the 1840 census. We didn't get the 1850 census for Morgan Dover until a few months ago when Seraphine got it. I hadn't really compared the ages again until last night when I looked this all over and did some more thinking. Have also always figured that Shared Dover on 1820 was SHEROD J DOVER who went to TX. 1820 YORK CO, SC (according to Jerry Jones this is Shaderick and he is listed next door to Michal Martin Jr) Shared 16-26 1794-1804 -- Shaderick Dover F 16-18 1802-1804 -- Jemima Martin M -10 1810-1820 1830 YORK CO, SC Shaderich Dover 30-40 1790-1800 LIVING BY HIMSELF 1830 YORK CO, SC (p 6 Jerry Jones' book) Michal Martin (Jr) 1 m 50-60 Michal Martin (50) --- father of Jemima (Martin) Dover 1 f 50-60 Mary Martin (50) 1 f 20-30 Sarah Martin (22) 1 f 15-20 Elizabeth Martin (21) 1 m 15-20 Manning Martin (17) 1 m 15-20 unknown 1 f 10-15 unknown 1 m 10-15 John Martin (15) 1 m 10-15 Alexander Martin (13) 1 f 0-10 unknown 1 f 0-10 unknown 1 m 0-10 unknown 1 m 0-10 unknown 1 m 0-10 unknown 1 m 0-10 unknown NOTE: Jones has no idea who all of the unknown kids are here. The only sense that this would make is that these kids were Jemima's. Hers could have all been born before 1830 and Shaderick is living by himself on 1830, so guess we have to assume that Jemima was already dead at this time if she was indeed md to Shaderick. Shaderick is sure missing the wife and family he started on the 1820 census here if that's him. ============= In the 1840 census p 275 for Michal Martin JR there are 4 male 10-15 and 4 female 5-10 that they have not named. Says Mary, dau, had apparently died at this time. Mary Martin, widow of Michal Martin JR wrote her will 30 Jul 1854 and named Jemima's kids as part of her heirs. Jemima was deceased already at the time of the writing as she is not named -- only her kids. After rethinking this --- I would have to say that Jones may be right in the fact that Shaderick Dover was md to Jemima Martin. It would make sense IF you assume that Jemima had her family and died prior to the 1830 census and her children were living with her father Michal Martin JR on the 1830 census. Shaderick had a wife and child on the 1820 census and is then living by himself on the 1830. Then found with a different wife and kids on the 1840 & 1850 census. =============== This is the data that Jerry Jones gives for children of Jemima Martin/Shaderick Dover 1 Morgan Dover b 1831 2 Deliah Dover b 1833 3 Nathaniel Dover b 1835 4 Marilla Dover (Morella) b 1837 5 Washington (twin) b 1839 6 Jackson (twin) b 1839 In a lot of cases Jones gives census data, but he doesn't on this family. Below are the dates of birth for these kids after further research --- SHADERICK DOVER md Jemima Martin b ca 1800 who was the d/o Mike Martin Jr / Mary Bolin. I've always figured that Deliah's date here was way too late, but don't have any census records on her to go off of. They could've all been born before 1830. ------------------------------------ ADDITIONAL DATA 3 / 2003 The 1850 census for Peterson Westmoreland in York Co, SC shows that Delilah was 27 b ca 1823. I am going to relate some of these that contain data about MORGAN DOVER. We can place the location of Michal Martin Jr with the following deed: 28 Jan 1832 -- Michal Martin Jr, leases 30 acres for 99 years for the purpose of mining gold and silver and minerals ......SITUATED ON GINE MOORE CREEK ON WHICH MICHAL MARTIN LIVED............... (Guyon Moores Cr) 10 Sep 1833 -- Michal Martin Jr. purchased 50 acres from Lewis Bolin and wife Viney (Martin) Bolin for $50.00 dollars. Land started at a post oak Wisher corner south to a pine stump Wisher corner north to a stake and north to a stake west to beginning. Reserved gold mineral rights on property. Witnessed by John Martin, William Ferguson and MORGAN DOVER. Proved 1 Oct 1833 by John Martin Recorded 24 Mar 1851. NOTE: Would Morgan Dover have been old enough to have witnessed a deed in 1833? This could be misleading -- It wasn't recorded until 1851 and maybe this was when Morgan witnessed it? Would have to look at the deed itself to be sure here. 8 Dec 1840 -- Robert Love Jr, of York County leased to E. Westmoreland, John Martin and MORGAN DOVER to be in full shares and Alexander Martin, William Love, SHADRICK DOVER and John Authur as half shares a tract of land for a term of 50 years for the use of mining business beginning at Pattersons old corner SE John Mullinax land S by Caldwells SW by P. Witnessed by James Epps, Mannin Martin(s/oMichal Martin Jr), and Manning Martin Sr(s/oMichal Martin SR) Proved by Manning Martin(s/oMichal Martin Jr) 4 Jun 1841 recorded 4 Jun 1841. (NOTE: these people are identified by Jerry Jones. Doesn't say how he arrived at these identities) 5 Dec 1844 -- Michal Martin Jr, sold 250 acres to Morgan Martins Sr on Wolf Creek waters of Kings Creek of Broad River in two (2) tracts of Land for a sum of $400.00. Witnessed by MORGAN DOVER and Alexander Martin (s/oMichal Martin, Jr). Said land to by his at the death of Michal (Jr) and Mary his wife. Witnessed by John Martin and MORGAN DOVER. Proved 4 Mar 1844 by MORGAN DOVER. NOTE: there was a forth deed on 23 Feb 1844 where Michal Martin Jr deeded his son Alexander Martin (at the time of his and Mary's death) on Moores Creek, south of Broad River, being part of a tract formerly belonging to Michal Martin SR. deceased. Sum $500.00. --- (I have shortened this one. ss) NOTE: Jerry Jones says that no will was found for Michal Martin JR and notes it rather odd because of his many land transactions over the years. I think Michal Jr did a lot of his dividing in the 4 entries made 23 Feb 1844 and probably others. He goes on to say that Mary Martin, his wife wrote her will 14 days after her husband's death. 8 Feb 1864 -- Last will and testament of Mary Martin widow of Michal Martin (JR) was proved in open court. Apparently from what we know, Hezekiah and Michael Dover were charged in the attack on Manning Martin who was md to Bershiber Dover at the time. The next part of the record that we have was found by Janelle Dixon where Hezekiah Dover as well as Frederick Dover and Shaderick Dover were all posting bond in connection to this charge. There has to be more in the records on this incident that just hasn't been found yet. I don't think that Frederick & Shaderick were involved in the initial charge of the altercation --- only Michael & Hezekiah were actually named and charged by Manning Martin. It could be that Janelle's find was where they were posting a bond as witnesses for either Hez or Michael. It would sure be interesting and beneficial to know just what their part in this incident was. We know at least that they had to have known each other and have to look at a possible family relationship as well. We know that Michael, Sherod J, Frederick, and Francis Marion Dover all ended up in the Rutherford Co, NC at the same time as Hezekiah Dover around 1830 before coming to GA. Hezekiah Dover is a documented brother of Francis J Dover. There are LDS records turned in that say that Shaderick Dover was the s/o Elijah Dover (of York Co). To date there has been no evidence found to indicate that as fact. LDS records (except for actual record documents) for the most part is information given by people just like us. The information given is not always correct and everything found in those records must be verified and documented or it's basically worthless. To date, there is no known father of the Shaderick Dover who remained in the York Co, SC area, but I would have to agree with Dennis that Hezekiah would be a logical possibility. Needs more research. ***************************************** From Marjorie's posted Dover timeline from the other day, I've noticed another correction that needs to be made. << In 1832, Harriett Dover marries Alfred Hicks in Habersham County, GA; Susan Dover marries John Gunter; Hannah Dover marries W.W. Green (see deeds concerning Anderson and Allen Dover). >> All of the Hab Co, GA marriage indexes that I have seen list the year of marriage for Susan Dover / John Gunter as 1832. Problem is that I have a copy of the handwritten marriage record that I ordered from Hab Co and the actual date is 4 Dec 1829. I have run across 3 or 4 marriage dates now from Hab Co where the actual record is different from what the index shows. You did a really good job of pulling all this data together Marjorie. Thanks! Thanks Terry. Sure does. The Mullinax cemetery in York is located East of Kings Creek and near Kings Mountain. The closest water course/ stream to the Mullinax Cemetery is today called the Garner Branch. It looks like Burrell's Branch became Mullinax Branch and then Garner Branch. Guess where Garner Branch begins or ends .... right behind Brown's Mountain inside Kings Mountain Park. Brown's Mountain (now a lookout station) was mentioned as the location of old John Dover who came back from wherever and set up his mill site way before 1800 ... from the Genealogy of the Dover family. -----Original Message----- From: Terry Jackson [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, January 09, 2004 7:08 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Dover] References to Dover in South Carolina Archives and History Index Does this help? http://www.angelfire.com/sc/piedmonths/cemeteries.html MULLINAX FAMILY CEMETERY The following inscriptions were copied March 21, 1979, by W.C.
