    1. [Dover] Rufus Lemuel Dover 1910 Erath County, TX
    2. Marjorie Stansel
    3. Mary Rheumma "Bama" Dover who was married to Andrew J. Holden is the Dover sister in the story who went to Texas. Rufus Lemuel is on the page previous to her in the Erath County Texas census (Justice Precinct 5) in 1910. Mary had Fred, Ethel and Lula Holden by 1910. Rufus and Louisa (Ida Cochran) had Boyd Judson, Nettie M., George, Elmer, Howard, and Maggie (Magdalene) at the time. They were farming and Rufus indicated his father (Burton) was born in South Carolina.

    1. [Dover] Article on George Dover, son of Rufus Lemuel Dover, son of Burton Dover
    2. Marjorie Stansel
    3. The descendant of Earl William Dover (Theron's son) has sent me some stories and information she had in her research through the years, and I thought the following was very interesting and adds another piece to the puzzle for some members of Burton's family. It also gives me another place to search in 1910 for Lemuel since I couldn't find him in the census records for 1910. The story follows: Another source to the family named Dover is the Atlanta Journal and Constitution Magazine in 12-12-65 (we have this article in the family folder, I kept it, Marjorie Parsons Dover); there is a story about a man named George Dover founds remains of churches and homes his father and grandfather built. One named High Shoals is such a church, in old Buncombe Community, a vanished village on the side of Buncombe Mountain. It's in Dawson County, high up above Amicalola and Cochran, Falls, so far back in the woods deer live in the one remaining tumbledown log house, seeking refuge there from the storm and snow. The article states, you can't find Buncombe on a map and you can't get there without a guide. You drive up the steep road to the top of Amicalola and keep going. George Dover of Dahlonega is a good a guide, as you can take. He helped get the new road built to High Shoals and he used to live there and his daddy and granddaddy. Who came from Ireland. His mother was a Cochran for which the Cochran Falls was named. "My grandfather Cochran was in the Civil War six years," he said. "He ran away from his daddy, left a steer standing in the field and walked through to Tennessee to join the army. He was just 16 or 17 but he told them the wrong age to get in. My grandfather joined the Northern side. He didn't believe in no human being used as a slave. "He was gone six years. All his life he drew a good pension, but Southern boys never got nothing but a lickin'. He saved his money in the army and when he came home he was an independent rich man. He had $500. George says, I was born in the house at the old home place at the foot of Cochran Falls, in 1909 when I was 8 my father moved his family to Texas. He had a sister, who had married out there and she wanted us to come work in the cotton country. My father had a sale and got rid of all the house things, the kitchen stuff, the furniture, even his rubber-tired buggy. As far as I know, he had the first rubber-tired buggy in the mountains. "We came back from Texas in 1912," Mr. Dover went on. "Boll Weevil had about ate us up, we had the finest fields of cotton you ever saw out there til the Weevils came. Hot winds would burn our corn up. It's be black as a crow. The wind would blow and in three days leaves would crumble in your hand, cured out like tobacco. My daddy never did come back up here. He lived in Pickens and Hall and Cobb Counties. George's grandfather, George W. Cochran, 9th Tennessee Cavalry sleeps in Nimberwill cemetery. George Dover reminisced about the Buncombe old-timers _ Roscoe Tucker's sister Monie Anderson who taught the school. Roll Bearden who drove a herd of Sheep to Atlanta with Mr. Dover's daddy. "I think it was Mack McClure who lived in the old log house, one of old man, John McClure's sons," said Mr. Dover. "There were a lot of McClures, and Eubanks, Rices, Cochrans, Dotsons _ I can't call all the names. Jeff Eubanks, if I should say such a thing, was shot by my uncle with a muzzle-loading shot gun. He shot him through his gate. Jeff had hit him the day before, made him bleed, and so my uncle went after him. He didn't kill him, but it cost my grandfather $500 to get my uncle out of it down at Dawsonville. This is a community in the forest near Dahlonega, GA. Marjorie Dover Stansel

    3. Another 25 marker result today. This one for Larry Dover on his 25 marker results. Larry & Patricia (our list manager) are descendants of Thomas Jefferson Dover. Sharon S and I have been in contact with someone in Arkansas who we think will take the DNA test in a couple of months. TJ Dover could have another older ancestor, but we won't know until the results are known. The second e-mail to those of us in the light blue group of results. You have a match! A high resolution match has been found between you and another person(s) in the Family Tree DNA database. You and the other person(s) have matched in 23, 24 or 25 loci, which means that there is a 99.9% likelihood you have a common ancestor.

    1. Re: [Dover] Mary (Dover) Owens
    2. Marjorie Stansel
    3. Mary and her husband were certainly in the Hezekiah/Frederick sphere post 1850. I was in this area Monday, and White County, Habersham (Clarksville) and Dahlonega area are all very close together with lots of cut-through roads leading over to Hall County also. I also thought it was interesting that she said she was born in Tennessee. Noah who would be closest to her in age also said he was born in Tennessee, so there's got to be something to that. It's very possible that Frederick and Jane Dover are buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in White County near Francis Logan and his family. There are lots of unmarked graves in the cemetery, and a number of my husband's ancestors are buried there, all of whom lived near Fred and Jane in Frogtown. When I have time, I'll go through the probate records in Lumpkin again, hoping to find something about burial for Fred, at least. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, January 20, 2004 8:20 AM Subject: [Dover] Mary (Dover) Owens > That's interesting Marjorie. 1. [Dover] Mary Dover and William F. Owens
    2. Marjorie Stansel
    3. I searched the Dover list archives and didn't find any remarks for the above individual other than the posting of a marriage record. Mary Dover married William F. Owens August 2, 1846 in Habersham County, Georgia. In 1850, there is a William F. Owens with a wife named Mary, age 25, living next door to Frederick and Jane Dover and their many children. I had a note in my records that there was a daughter in the household of Fred and Jane in 1830 in Rutherford County in the 5 year old range, but just assumed the daughter passed away.. Mary would fit within this range, and the only other candidate would have been Elvira who appears to be 18 in 1850. They had a daughter named Elizabeth who was one year old. Is there anyone on the list who knows anything about this Mary Dover? Marjorie Dover Stansel

    3. Dennis thanks for finishing that story; I remember that from you and I talking 10 years ago. I had his in-laws wrong. Did you tell me one time that you had been in contact with some Revods? Bobby ----- Original Message ----- From: Dennis Dover<mailto:[email protected]> To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, January 18, 2004 11:12 PM Subject: RE: [Dover] Peter Dover Peter was the son of John & Elizabeth Dover in Bibb Co., AL. He changed his name to Revod after he escaped. He didn't go far and was in the area that Bobby Dover just mentioned. He is in several censuses. There are no living Dover descendants. Peter is said by maternal descendants to have said "Dover" on his deathbed - none of his children knew they were Dover's. Peter was apparently a farmer and school teacher the rest of his life. Jesse & Amanda Dover Miller are thought to have gone to Tennessee. The DNA of John & Elizabeth Dover's descendants would be one of the most interesting and probably surprising. Another story passed down from Peter's family was that they had kin in Anderson County, South Carolina. Bibb County, Alabama - 1st 100 years Peter Dover with his brother-in-law Jesse Miller made a practice and living robbing their neighbors. It was difficult to charge them though because they were difficult to catch in the act of robbery. Livestock, grain, cotton, anything that could be sold was a target. Once they were caught because a farmer had marked his cotton in such a way to be recognized when it was sold. Jesse owned 12 mule farm SE of Scottsdale and was the leader of the gang. Peter Dover shot Archie Wood from ambush and was sent to State Prison January 1884 - needless to say, he escaped. -----Original Message----- From: Gayle Calabrese [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, January 18, 2004 8:12 PM To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Subject: Re: [Dover] Peter Dover Dennis..........Wasn't it a Peter "RevoD" who shows up in the west someplace about this time? 1. [Dover] John Luther Dover, son of William and Alanthey Chambers Dover
    2. Marjorie Stansel
    3. I finally located John Luther Dover in 1920. He is listed in the index as "Bouer". I found him by searching in Ancestry.com for his son John Albert. I entered the name Albert without a last name, indicating an approximate age and with Georgia as birth state and as state to search. I got a hit on Albert Bouer, as well as some others. This was the most likely target, and it turned out to be John Albert Dover, age 27, living with his wife Annie Mae, age 21, and their daughter, Ruby Irene, age 4. They were living in Black's Militia District, Dawson County, Georgia. Next door to Albert was J.L. (John Luther). He is listed as 63 years of age. He indicates his father (William) was born in South Carolina. His son Walter is age 17 (by Joannah Roper), and he has two other sons (by Jane Garrett), Henry age 9, and Thomas age 7. He says he is a Widower. Thus far, I have not found any of these individuals in 1930, and I have tried the above tricks to try to scare them up. Let me know if anyone runs across any of the above individuals in 1930. Marjorie Dover Stansel

    3. Although there are still lots of unanswered questions about the children of William and Alanthey, the information below comes from census records, from marriage records, from deed records of several counties, from cemeteries, death certificates, and from the indian applications and affidavits of Alanthey Chambers Dover and some of her children and most especially, from my "cousins" on the Dover List. Here's a list of William and Alanthey's children as they appear from time to time in census records: BENJAMIN WILEY DOVER, b. October 01, 1843, Hall County, GA; d. DOVER, b. 1859; d. Bef. 1870. OR IS THE SAME AS MAHULDA OR HULDADOVER BELOW? RICHARD DOVER, b. January 1863, Auraria, Lumpkin County, GA; d. January 10, 1931, Lumpkin County married Sarah Lemley. HULDA DOVER, b. June 10, 1861, Martin's Ford, Lumpkin County, GA; d. December 24, 1942, Forsyth County, GA, butial Salem Baptist Church, married Martin Marlin Bell. MARY MARGARET A. DOVER, b. (1) Georgia Bennett, (2) Mrs. Vinie Brown. ================================ About John Luther, specifically, at the time of the 1870 census, William and his family are listed on the census for Lumpkin County, Auraria. William says he was born in North Carolina and is 54 years old (he said he was 31 in 1850). His wife, Alantha, is keeping house and is 46 years old. Their son William, who was 6 in 1860, is now 14 (should be 16). Their son John L., born since the last census, is listed as being 12. He was not on the 1860 census, so could only be 10 or less. No mention is made of the Mary M.E. who was age 1 on the last census. This may be the same as Hulda--the name Mahulda being shortened to Hulda. Hulda is listed as age 10, but since we know her older brother, John L. wasn't on the last census and could only be 10 or less, we must assume that Hulda was at least 2 years younger than him Or that she is the Mary M.E. on the earlier census, and John's age is wrong. Another son, Richard, is listed as age 9, but we must also assume that he was at least a year younger. A new Mary, Mary A, is age 6, and is the baby. William and Alanthey had as neighbors, their son Frank and his new wife, Hannah Wade, and Hannah Wade's parents, David and Susanna Wade. ----- Original Message ----- From: sromanek <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, January 17, 2004 9:34 PM Subject: Re: [Dover] JL & WF Dover In Forsythe Co, Ga. 3. Gayle I think that Peter Dover changed his name to Peter Revod and moved over in the Tri county area in my neck of the woods out in the area where Franklin, Winston, and Lawrence county Al come togeather. The story goes that he and another prisoner were giving tools to fix there boots and they used then to get out and was never heard from again. It seems that Peter married a Jack Wilson daughter, and Jack ran an outlaw gang. I have always wonder if the same Jack Wilson moved to Lawrence county Al where my great uncle married a daughter of a Jack Wilson. 3. Peter was the son of John & Elizabeth Dover in Bibb Co., AL. -----Original Message----- From: Gayle Calabrese [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, January 18, 2004 8:12 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Dover] Peter Dover Dennis..........Wasn't it a Peter "RevoD" who shows up in the west someplace about this time? 1. [Dover] William Walter Dover Obit
    2. Dennis Dover
    3. This should be a great grandson of Edmund Dover and part of the Etowah/Blount County Dover families. William would also have been the brother of Forest Dover who died in the mining accident. I have corresponded with Williams brother Earnest in the past who I think broke the mystery of who many of these Alabama families were that do go back to the 1850 Lumpkin County, Georgia census. This is one of two families that carried the name of Ky for an old Dover ancestor. Lot of long research history on this family group in the letter writing days. William is kin to many of us in the DNA tests. Obit. 1. [Dover] Esther Dickson in the York Co, SC Court Records
    2. I"ve contacted a Dickson researcher trying to find out who this Esther Dickson was and what connection she might have had to any of the people involved in these court cases that Janelle posted. This is the exchange ---- Hello, I ran across a posting that you did on the Dixon Gen Forum concerning the descendants of William Dickson / Susanna Hambright.  I'm hoping that maybe you can answer a question about an Esther Dickson in the York Co, SC court records that one of our Dover researchers has found.  October term 1832.  John McGill, Jiney Childers, Nancy Childers, Barsheba Martin, and Mannon Martin, and John Mullinax, Michael Martin bound in a case of petty larceny against Esther Dickson.  True Bill  (This one was in real bad shape...very fragile and faded.) July 27, 1839  Shadrac Dover assault on Esther A. Dickson.  Flip side has Esther Dickson and Margaret Dickson.  No Bill.  -------------------------------------- Susannah (Hambright) Dickson's mother was Mary (DOVER) Hambright the # 2 wife of Col Frederick Hambright. Barsheba Martin in the 1832 case against Esther Dickson is Barsheba (DOVER) Martin who was the wife of Manning Martin.  Shaderick DOVER in the 1839 court case was md to Jemima Martin the d/o Michael Martin Jr who was a brother of the Manning Martin that was md to Barsheba DOVER.  The 1830 York Co, SC Index shows the following --- D250  DICKSON         ISABELLA        M-19 173  370  No Twp Listed D250  DICKSON         THOMAS          M-19 173  383  No Twp Listed D250  DICKSON         WILLIAM           M-19 173  377  No Twp Listed D250  DICKSON         WILLIAM COL.    M-19 173  384  No Twp Listed D250  DICKSON         WILLIAM REV.    M-19 173  384  No Twp Listed D160  DOVER           SHADERICK       M-19 173  380  No Twp Listed The 1840 York Co, SC Index shows the following  --- D250  DICKSON         A. h.           M-70 516  263  No Twp Listed D250  DICKSON         Isabella       M-70 516  273  No Twp Listed D250  DICKSON         Susan         M-70 516  266  No Twp Listed D250  DICKSON         Thomas       M-70 516  326  No Twp Listed D250  DICKSON         William        M-70 516  271  No Twp Listed D160  DOVER           Shadock       M-70 516  274  No Twp Listed ***************************** Can you tell me who this Esther Dickson was and who she was connected to?  Do you know what either of these court cases might have been about?  We are trying to prove some of the Dover relationships that were in very early York Co, SC.  Anything that you can tell me about a possible relationship to any of the above named would be very much appreciatied. Looking forward to hearing from you. Sharon Sukiennik  << [email protected]  >> ********************************* Reply from Bennett Dickson --- Sharon,   This is a difficult question and I don't have a firm answer.  But, perhaps I can give you some clues that may be useful.   Three DICKSON/DIXON families are found in this area of colonial North and South Carolina.   The first is the family of General Joseph DICKSON (1745-1825) who lived in what is now Gaston Co, NC.  His son Robert (1773-1849) married Esther MOORE (c1777).  But they were in Tennessee by 1810, so I don't think that this is your Esther.   The second family is Thomas DICKSON (c1740-1783).  This family lived in the King's Creek area and are found on both sides of the North Carolina/South Carolina line. The William DICKSON (c1798-c1850) who married Susanna HAMBRIGHT (c1798-1882) is a grandson of this Thomas DICKSON.  There is  an Easter DICKSON (1810) who is a granddaughter of Thomas DICKSON who might be the Esther in the bill.  I don't have any record of her marriage.  I can't find any Esther among the daughters and wives of this family.   The third family is that of Rev William DICKSON (1755-1831).  Rev. Dickson came to York County from Ireland after the Revolution.  Family tradition holds that he was related to the Thomas DICKSON family of King's Creek. Rev. DICKSON's daughter Margaret (1784-1874) married Francis HENRY.  They had a daughter name Esther, born about 1820 who died after 1860.  I don't know if she ever married, but her age makes her an unlikely candidate. There is a Lewis DICKSON d 1828, connection unknown, whose son Marchal DICKSON (1811-1869) who married Margaret MARTIN. I don't know much about this family, but believe that they lived in this area.   That's all that I could come up with.  The family of Gen. Joseph DICKSON is very well documented, but the other two are not.  Much of my information on these two families came from the notes of Joe Hart that are preserved at the York County Historical Society.  This is the best source for early York County families.   Bennett

    3. I still can't help but feel someone lurking in the shadows has the missing link I need. And I bet you don't even know you have it. I don't know how many folks we have on our list but I'm sure there's a few we've not ever heard from. I'll make an offer. I have subscriptions to both Ancestry and Genealogy.com. I live within 45 mins of a library that has Alabama Death Records 1908-1959. I will trade an Alabama Death Record (uncertified) and/or a couple of census lookups (Dover or not) for your posting of your Dover family to the list. That's all you have to do. Post your family information then contact me at [email protected] to provide your request and contact information. Just so you'll know, AL death records cost $12.00 from Montgomery now. Any takers?
