Patricia, My brother's was already "unchecked." Here's why I have ignored the matches with other surnames. I'm first concerned about the generation of who was who ca 1750 in those hills of North Carolina. Another 100 years of 40 generations back would be great and we could find that outside the US, but another 1000 years ... :-) FAMILY TREE DNA: If you compare the 12 marker result to someone else who does not have the same surname, but the scores match, you are most likely NOT recently related. When we use the term recently related, we are talking about a time frame within the last 1000 years or 40 generations, a time depth that accommodates the earliest known use of surnames. -----Original Message----- From: Patricia [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, February 23, 2004 10:08 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [Dover] DNA page I just wanted to let the DNA participants know that if they go to their DNA page at FamilyTreeDNA and click on update contact information about 1/2 way down the page there is a little box that is checked off. Dear Coordinator, I am wondering if I have a problem receiving E-mail messages from you. I have not had a message posted since Feb. 15 which is unusual because there is usually a message or two every several days. Can you please advise if there is a technical problem. Should I sign up again. If so, would you please advise again how to register. Thanks. Marge Dover Bonfield
As of today Please cancel my mail as I will be in East Texas with my brother who is very ill. I will rejoin the group upon my return. Dennis, Did you tell me you had some info on Dover living in Oklahoma. I met a Shannon Dover at Fort Campbell, and he was shipping out for the Bad Lands in thirty min. after we took the picture I sent to you and other cousins. He was Special Forces Dover, as I was, By golly he and I look a like except for the huge difference in age. I sure would like to find his family. As you know he could not tell me anything except he was leaving with two chopper pilots. This was Memorial Day when we dedicated the new monument. As you know that is me, Blake my grandson, Jeff my number three son. Dennis it was nice talking to you on the phone the other day. Katheryn said hello. Going to Tn in the morning to see my mom, got an uncle in the hospital. I just got home from my Hospital Board Meeting. I am on the finance committee telling them where to invest their money. They thing I have done a good job with mine change. Maybe just lucky. ha If you know anything more on the Dover in Oklahoma please ! let me know. Bobby, I didn't get the picture and it's hard to imagine a snake eater older than you that is still wearing a green beret :-) Sounds like Shannon is from Oklahoma? Probably no way to get in touch with him to find out the name of his father and grandfather born before 1930. If so, there's a good chance to figure out his family. The Dover family in Oklahoma that connects with you came from northern Arkansas having arrived from East Tennessee and North Georgia. Dennis -----Original Message----- From: Bobby G. Two daughters of William and Alanthey Chambers married Elrod brothers. Sarah married John B. (sometimes called Jackson) Elrod on October 03, 1869; her sister Susan Jane married Joseph Marion Elrod on December 21, 1865. These two Elrod males were the son of Peter Elrod and Catherine Ann Higgins who married in 1834 in Habersham County, Georgia. Susan Jane started her existence on the records, appearing in the household of William and Alanthey Dover in 1850 in Hall County. She was listed as S.J., age 6. In 1860, in Lumpkin County, she was listed as "Jane", age 18. December 21, 1865, she married Joseph M. Elrod in Lumpkin County. In 1870, she and Joseph, 29, are still in Lumpkin, near her parents. Joseph is listed as 29, born in South Carolina, working in the Gold Mine (Auraria). She is listed as 25. They have two children, Augustus P., age 3, and William, one month old. Also living with them is Catherine Elrod, age 55. Catherine is Joseph's mother who has been divorced by their father, Peter Elrod. In 1880, she is listed as Susan, age 34, and Joseph is 41. Martin is 13; he was not listed on the previous census. Augustus is 10; he was 3 on the last census. This leads me to believe that the census taker made an error, recording Martin's age as Augustus' and leaving Martin off the census in 1870. Miranda is listed as age 6. William is not listed, lending credence to the fact that the census taker made two errors. Two males have been added: Joseph, age 5, and George, age 2. In 1900, Joseph was living with his daughter Martha, and Susan Jane had apparently died. ====================================================== On Alanthey Dover's indian application, she stated that the children of Sarah Elrod were Goodman, Martin, Polina, Polly and William. Polina and Polly would appear to be Lantha and Syltena. Sarah's tombstone indicates she was born in 1855; census records disagree. In 1870, Sarah gives her age as 18. She is living in Lumpkin County, House 38, and is married to Jackson Elrod, age 25, a farm laborer. The 1900 census gives her birthdate as 1848, but she appeared on the census in 1860 for the first time. ----- Original Message ----- From: sromanek <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, February 15, 2004 8:16 PM Subject: [Dover] Elrod-Dover Marriage > Anyone know who this one is? > http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/data/ga+index+1525321899318 9+F > Lumpkin Marriages 1829-1922 Groom Index (D-H) Lumpkin > County, GA > > Elrod, Jno. In the event there are any descendants of this brother to my ancestor, I am including the "bulk" of the information I have on him and his family, as follows: BENJAMIN WILEY DOVER was the first-born son of William and Alanthey Chambers Dover. He was born October 01, 1843 in Hall County, GA. In 1860, Benjamin was listed on the census records in Lumpkin County (Martin's Ford) as being 15, making him born about 1844-1845. In May 1863, he entered the Confederate Army at Dahlonega, Georgia in the 52nd Georgia Volunteers, Calvary Company H or E, until it's surrender in 1865 when he was paroled in Atlanta, Georgia (according to his Civil War Pension Statement). In 1867, he signed an Oath of Registration in Dawson County, 931st Election Precinct. He was unable to sign his name. He married MARY LEE GAINES December 12, 1869 in Dawson County, Georgia (her name was listed as Mary Lee in the marriage records). In 1870, he and Mary Lee were both listed on the census records of Blairsville in Union County. He listed his age as 24. They had no children. By 1880, they had moved to Cherokee County, AL, Township 10, District 23. The 1880 census lists Benjamin and Mary as being 34; Nicodemus is listed as being 10; Absolum (later called Abner D.) is listed as being 9; Garland O. is listed as "Northas", age 6, and Ann is listed as age 4. It's difficult to read the word "Northas", so that may be "Orton" or something similar. In 1885, Benjamin acquired 40.1 acres of land in Cherokee County (federal land patent record) In 1897, Nicodemous Dover entered a homestead claim for 159.08 acres in Winston (Section 35, Township 11-S, 7-W Range (N1/2NW). In the 1900 census, Benjamin is listed as age 60; his wife Mary as 54, a son Thomas is listed as age 17, and Lucy is listed as being age 14. Appearing separately on the 1900 census are James Dover, age 20, and his wife Willie, age 28. I believe this is Benjamin's son since no other Dovers appeared to be in this area of Alabama at that time. Also Abner (formerly Absolem) is shown as being 28, living with his wife Martha Hill Dover, age 30. They have a daughter whose name looks like Slety E. Dover, age 6 (I believe this is the Sadie in the 1911 Smith School Picture and the "Effie" who married a Woodley. They also have a son named Junyer (Junior) G. (Goodman), age 2. Nick Dover appears as age 29, with his wife Mary Battles Dover, age 38. They have a daughter Lily, age 8, a son Luther T, age 5, a son William B., age 4, and another daughter, Mary E. Dover, age 2. Living with them is Anne E. Battles, age 72, Mary's mother. On November 12, 1900, Ben's son Ab entered a homestead claim for 158.65 acres in Winston, AL (Section 32/33, Township 10-S, Range 7-W, Fract. Sec. N (NWSW). On October 11, 1902, Ben entered an homestead entry for 120.25 acres in Winston County, AL (Section 5, Township 11-S, 6-W, E1/2NE). Benjamin is listed on the 1907 Confederate Soldiers Census, Winston. Alabama. DOVER, Benjamin Wiley Present address Helican, Al. "Born 1845 at Leoniga {Dahlonega}, Lumpkin County, Ga. first entered the service as Pvt in May 1863 at Leoniga, Ga. in the Cav Co H or D until the surrender in 1865 when I was paroled at Atlanta, Ga." In 1910, Ben is listed as age 60 (same age he appeared as in 1900), Mary is listed as age 61, and Pearl, their granddaughter is living with them. I don't know which Dover male she belonged to. They are all alive (as far as I can determine) on this date. In a separate household, Abner is listed as 35, and Martha Hill Dover is listed as 41. Sadie is 16, Junior is 14, Burline is listed as 8, and Bell is 4. Nick Dover is listed as age 40, with hsi wife Mary listed as 46. Their son Luther is now 16, Benjamin is 14, and Mary is 12. The Winston County Heritage Book contained a segment on Smith School House and included a photo of the first school class taught in 1911-1912. In the photo are the following Dover children: Sadie, Berline, Roy, Boyd, Junior, Lois, and Bellzora Dover. These are probably all children or grandchildren of Benjamin Wiley Dover, brother to William Dover of Forsyth County, Georgia. Junior Goodman Dover looks very much like my youngest brother (reddish hair, bushy eyebrows and fair complexion). Benjamin Wiley Dover died in 1914, and is buried in the cemetery at Liberty Baptist Church, an old rock church, in Helicon, Alabama. His death certificate indicates he was a Miller and that he died of Bright's disease (which is another term for kidney failure). He was said to be 78, and the informant indicated his parents were born in Georgia. He and his wife had the following children: 1. NICODEMUS (NICK) DOVER, b. September 07, 1870, died December 10, 1936 in Cordova, Walker County, AL. . In 1920, Nick, age 50, was in Walker County, AL. His wife Mary (Battles) was 58, and the following people were in their household: Arley R. Foster, son-in-law, age 28; Lillie, age 27, Lottie, granddaughter, age 5, and Otha D. 2 yr 5 mo old grandson. Nick's children were Lily Dover, b. 1892 (married Arlee R. Foster and had Lottie Foster 1925 and Otha D. Foster 1927); Luther T. Dover, b. July 5, 1893, died August 1987 (married Vaden A. Russell; their children were:Gracie 1914, Opal 1915, Eylene 1917, Audine 1919, Teressa 1922 and Hazel 1924); William Benjamin Dover, b. 1896 (married Belle and had Mitchell, b. 1920, Dorothy, b. 1922, Dorette, 1924); Mary E. Dover, b. 1898; and Boyd Dover, b. July 27, 1904, d. 1981 (Boyd married Vergie ? and had Betty J. b. 1929 and Boyd J.). 2. ABSOLUM "ABNER" DAILEY DOVER, b. February 02, 1872; d. June 29, 1953. He married Martha Hill April 5, 1899 in Winston County, AL. They had the following children: Sadie Effie Dover, b. 1894 m. O.Y. Woodley; Junior Goodman Dover, b. August 11, 1897 d. October 14, 1981 m. Beulah Sudduth; Burline Dover, b. 1902 died before 1921, m. William Waldrop; and Bellzora Dover, b. 1906 m. unk. Day. 3. GARLAND O. DOVER, b. January 02, 1875; d. July 10, 1941. He married Sarah Alice Wisener in 1899, and they had a daughter named Jewell, b. 1902; he remarried to Dora ?, and they had a daughter named Lucille, b. 1915. In 1941, Garland was struck by a train (skull was crushed). 4. ANN DOVER, b. 1876, buried at Liberty Baptist Church. 5. JAMES DOVER, b. 1880 m. Willie unk. 6. THOMAS DOVER, b. October 27, 1881; d. October 20, 1962, Winston County, Alabama, Liberty Baptist Church, Helicon; m. DORA L. MOORE, November 23, 1905 7. LUCY DOVER, b. February 1885; m. S. O. WISENER.
Elizabeth Dover, Certificate # 468, was born "Mary Elizabeth Clifton" on 11 December 1846, probably in AL, married John Abel Dover, 14 FEB 1886, Clay Co, AL, by J.A. Shaddix, at home of Tenet Clifton. 2nd wife of John Abel Dover. William Frederick Dover was the son of Edmond Bryan & Mary Durmid Dover. Edmond was in the 1850 Lumpkin County, Georgia census along with Burton Dover and Noah Dover, ages 23, 28 and 26. They were living next door to Frederick & Jane Dover. I don't know who Edith was but it looks like she could have been the daughter of Walter William Dover. In 1910, William F. Dover and his wife Sarah were living in Altoona on Highland Avenue in Etowah County, Alabama. He was a coal miner. His age was 47, and his wife, Sarah A. was 33. His son Walter was 18, and another son, Andrew J. was 11. Children of WILLIAM DOVER and SARAH BLANCHET are: 7. i. FOREST L. DOVER, b. July 12, 1885; d. November 17, 1914, Jefferson, Alabama, scalded to death in a mining accident. 8. ii. WALTER WILLIAM DOVER, b. February 29, 1892, AL; d. October 31, 1944, Jefferson County, Birmingham, AL. 9. iii. ANDREW JAMES DOVER, b. 1899, Jefferson County, AL. iv. FEMALE DOVER, d. Died young with typhoid fever. -----Original Message----- From: sromanek [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, February 15, 2004 11:28 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [Dover] More Dover Death Certificates from Alabama Anyone wanting copies of these as attachments in e-mail is welcome to them. Well hello cousin Brenda! What a nice surprise. I did not know you were on the list or a cousin. I do not have anything more recent than your father's name. That I got from a census record. It is nice to meet you even if it is on the Dover list and not in person. I am always happy to find a new cousin. I am from the same line as you are by the way. You descend from Alfred Franklin Dover who was a brother to my Henry Anderson Dover. I wish I could share pictures with you, but the truth is I have very few. I wish I had many more. I was raised without knowing a lot about my Dover family since my grandparents divorced many years before I was born. I do have a few of my immediate line, but nothing past Henry Anderson at this point. My grandpa was John Franklin Dover, son of Henry Anderson Dover. Henry's wife was America Tennessee Shrader, who was a cousin to your Alfred's wife who was Missouri Alice Shrader. I have both Missouri's and Alfred's death certificates. I could share th! ose with you if you would like. Do you know your cousin Max? Where do you live? He lives in Alabama. If you do I am sure you would enjoy meeting him. I live in North Carolina and met Max about 3-4 years ago now at the cemetery where Alfred and Missouri as well as Henry Anderson and America are buried. The Shraders are buried there as well. I look forward to more sharing with you Barbara. This is great.
