Thanks so much for all you have given me. I shall always appreciate your generosity. I need some uninterrupted time to pore over it all, and will start with Tranquille's and Marie's daughter, Marguerite, now that I have some good direction. Perhaps one day we'll be in touch again. I'm so glad I put out my query on the Doucet Message Board and was assisted by a Boudreau! Again, merci! Author: dgfim22 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.doucette/474.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Yes, I'm a professional, and yes, an Acadian... a Boudreau to boot. The only Rachel Boudreau I have that would fit would be Rachel Boudreau, born at Petit-Rocher, NB on 12 Aug 1827, the daughter of Osias Boudreau & Marie Boudreau. Osias Boudreau (s/o Joseph & Isabelle Bujold) Marie Boudreau (d/o Cyprien & Françoise Melanson) m Bathurst, NB 1 Oct 1818 If she was Xavier's first wife, then the affinity dispensation would be totally incorrect. It was a 3-4° affinity which was a second cousin once removed. This Rachel Boudreau would have been Elisabeth's first cousin, as Elisabeth's father Eusèbe was the brother of Rachel's father Osias, and the dispensantion would or should have been 2° affinity. So Rachel has to be someone different or the priest got the "cousin in-law" relationship incorrectly. I also found another Rachel but born much too early and and other one born much too late. No charge for these findings. Will continue looking but can't promise anything positive. I also found a Marguerite Lavigne, d/o Tranquille Lavigne and Marie Arseneault in the Rootsweb Worldconnect database (Family Trees above). They had a daughter Marguerite in the 1871 census of Bathurst who was 16 years old, about the correct age to have been William Doucet's wife. There were two more, one of whomn was older than William and another who the 1881 census gives as the widow of a DeGrace, so definitely not yours. These three were the only Margaret/Marguerite's in Bathurst who would be candidates to have been his spouse. I would go with Tranquille and Marie's daughter (see the attached for ancestry). Author: MarthaEW43 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.doucette/474.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Dennis, THANK YOU for helping me with the Doucet line! I have been trying to do it myself for 2 years, but never figured that Eli was William and the age discrepancies really threw me, too. I'm glad to learn about the dispensations for consanguinity and degree of affinity from the church, all news to me. The latter is a new term for me as a novice in this pursuit, as well! So, I'm guessing that you are a professional, with a focus on Acadian genealogy, and you are probably an Acadian yourself, right? I'm excited to be able to trace my Doucet line all the way to Germain but still anxious to find Xavier's first wife, my gg grandmother, to trace that line. I've found an 1860 census dealing with a Francois Xavier and a wife, Rachel, native, I think, and I think I later found her as Rachel Boudreau, but I hate to admit that I didn't document what I found (novice!). Would you be willing to professionaly poke further to uncover my gg grandmother for me? I'm 69 and back taking one French course per semester at the University of Maine after having earned a degree in Romance Languages there in 1965(!). My friend Lisa Michaud, at the Centre Franco-Americain at U Maine, had given me the names of 2 genealogists doing Acadian research, who told me my Doucet line wasn't doable without William's and Marguerite's births and marriage data, as well their parents' marriage data. And then you came along... So what do you think? Interested in checking further? What would you charge? If you aren't interested in working more on this, I totally understand and will be forever grateful for the amazing gift that you have already given me as a person who cares about Acadian genealogy. Thanks again, and I look forward to hearing from you. Martha Whitehouse Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: dgfim22 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.doucette/474.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Your William Doucet is listed as Guillaume X Doucet in the 1891 census of Beresford (Petit-Rocher), NB, aged 39y, with his wife Marguerite, aged 38y. Guillaume is the French version of William. X (since he had no middle name) refers to his father Xavier Doucet. Listed with them are children: Joseph M. 11y, Marie-Anne 9y & Henri 8y. There were undoubtedly a couple of others on the next page which I could not access at the time. Going back to the 1881 census of Beresford (Petit-Rocher), I found the family of Xavier Doucet 58y, and his wife, Elisabeth, 46y. and their children: Elizabeth 22y, Ernest 20y, Marie, 16y, Joseph 14y, Rose 12y, Annie 10y, & François 8y; withe them are Elie Doucet 28y, his wife Marguerite 25y and son Joseph M. 1 month old. So in this record, Guillaume/William was named Elie (or Elias in English). In the 1871 census of Beresford (Petit-Rocher) we find Xavier Doucet 49y with his wife Elizabeth 28y, and children: Marguerite 21y, Elie 19y, Elizabeth 13y, Ernest 9y, Marie 7y, Joseph 5y and Annie 1y. In the 1866 parish census of Petit-Rocher we find Xavier Doucet and his wife, Elisabeth Boudreau, with their children: Willie 15y, Margueirte 6y, Elizabeth 8y, Ernest 5y, Marie (no age given) and Joseph 1 & 1/2 y. Despite the ages discrepancies, these four censuses are dealing with the same family group... yours. I found the following marriages for the children of Guillaume & Marguerite Lavigne: Marie-Anne, m Petit-Rocher, NB 1 Oct 1901 with André COMEAU Joseph-Henri, m Petit-Rocher, NB 20 Jun 1911 with Marie-Louise ROY Elizabeth, m Petit-Rocher, NB 15 Jan 1919 with André FOURNIER Guillaume married as Elias DOUCET (no parents listed) of Petit-Rocher, NB with Marguerite LAVIGNE (no parents listed) of Bathurst, NB at Bathurst, NB [Ste-Famille Ch.] on 11 Nov 1879 Since we know he was a son of Xavier and Elizabeth from the censuses, we see that Xavier DOUCET (no parents listed) of Petit-Rocher, NB married Elisabeth BOUDREAU (no parents listed) of Petit-Rocjher, NB also at Bathurst, NB [Ste-Famille Ch.] on 10 Nov 1856 Xavier must have been previously married as theere are dispensations from consanguinity (2-3°c) accorded to his & Elisabeth's marriage (they were first cousins, once removed: really they were second cousins) and also from 3-4°aff. (affinity was accorded between his first spouse and Elisabeth Boudreau, and indicates a prior marriage, which unfortunately, I have not been able to loacte). This Xavier Doucet was son of Hubert Doucet & Marie Haché, who married at Bathurst on 18 Jun 1816. Hubert was the son of Joseph & Victoire (Bujold) Doucet; Marie the daughter of Antoine & Françoise (Bernard) Haché. Joseph Doucet was son of Charles & Anne (Arseneau) Doucet; Victoire was the daughter of Charles & Marguerite (Cormier) Bujold. Due to the age discrepany for Guillaume/Elie, I am uncertain if Elisabeth Boudreau was indeed his mother or his stepmother, and since I have not found a record of Xavier's first marriage, nor an exact birth for Guillaume/Elie, cannot say for certain. If ELisabeth was indeed his mother, she was daughter of Eusèbe Boudreau and Rose Roy of Petit-Rocher, NB. Now you can trace back the line of Charles Doucet and Anne Arseneau to finish off your Doucet line, by clicking on the Family Trees in the above Rootsweb/Ancestry menu, and continue your research. Hopefully what I have provided is some help to you. Best regards, Dennis Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. HEAR YE … HEAR YE … HEAR YE. GERMAIN DOUCET (SIEUR DE LAVERDURE): MY PATERNAL ANCESTRY IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE ON AMAZON (US). http://www.amazon.com/dp/1935786350/ This journey of the past 23 years has been an amazing one. I have been privileged, over the course of this journey, to have met so many wonderful people. Much can be accomplished when we work together. I can remember my father (who will have been deceased for 12 years on July 24, 2012) telling me that while he was the youngest of 16 children, that there were also 2 sets of twins. While the discovery was challenging, with siblings having been born in Massachusetts (whilst living between the towns of both Reading and Wakefield), it proved to be a successful one; even to the point where I discovered the sole missing sibling (a still-born female) during the summer of 2011. I was not meant to publish this book until she was found; of that you can be sure. I trust that my diligent research will be of assistance to a great many who are ready to embrace the same with respect to their own families. Michele <https://tsw.createspace.com/title/TO_BE_REPLACED> Yes Following the St. Germain-en-Laye Treaty of March 29, 1632, it was by order of Cardinal Richelieu (Minister of State to King Louis XIII), that Commander Isaac de Razilly came to re-occupy the colony; so, too, did Germain Doucet (Sieur de La Verdure), the progenitor of this author’s family, accompany him. Sailing from France on July 4, 1632, they arrived with a variety of livestock, seeds, tools, implements, arms, munitions, and other supplies, at La Have (LaHève), located at the mouth of the La Have River in present day Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, on September 8. In keeping with the forced Deportation of the French Acadian people, the family of Joseph Doucet and Anne Surette were exiled from Port Royal, to Massachusetts, on December 4, 1755. After a few weeks in Boston, they were assigned to the town of Gloucester in County Essex. Less than ten years later, Joseph is listed on a petition, to the Governor of Massachusetts, dated August 24, 1763, seeking permission, together with one hundred seventy-nine families, to return to Old France, which was not to be. Several years later, a second attempt was made. On February 8, 1766, one hundred forty-seven families (a total of eight hundred ninety souls), including Joseph Doucet, asked for permission to leave Massachusetts, in order to return to Canada; as before, they were unable to leave. It was during the following year, 1767, that the Acadians petitioned Governor Franklin of Nova Scotia for land on which to settle. As they were Roman Catholic, they could not be granted land. The Governor, however, allotted them land, along the shore of Baie Sainte-Marie (today known as St. Mary’s Bay) on December 23, 1767. Joseph Doucet spent the first winter at Annapolis Royal (formerly Port Royal, his original home). With land surveyed in 1768, the township of Clare was laid out along Baie Sainte-Marie, Joseph Doucet settled near what is today called Church Point. The records show that, after completing the necessary requirements, he was granted title to Lot 58 (103 acres), in the township of Clare, on May 18, 1775, living there for the rest of his life, as both fisherman and farmer. Several of his sons, namely Joseph, Charles, Jean Magloire and Michel, settled further south in Yarmouth County, the area of this author’s roots. <https://tsw.createspace.com/title/TO_BE_REPLACED> Yes
