    3. Hi, My grandfather, Edward Gill, and his family are shown on the 1911 census as living at 1 Hope Square, Weymouth. As a child in the 1950s I remember there just being a small, triangular piece of land where number 1 Hope Square would have been. My father told me that one of his sister's accidentally burned down the house by knocking over a lighted candle in her bedroom. However I think this story is probably just family legend! Would anyone on the list with an interest in local history know what actually did happen to 1 Hope Square ? Many thanks, Sue Irvine

    3. I just viewed the detailed Ordnance survey map for Hope Square/Cove Street and it does show number 2 and 3 Hope Square to the left of the Red Lion. Number one would be that small triangle. The width of the harbor end of the triangle is about the same width as house number 2. If there were a house on that plot, then Cove street would have a slightly different line. In fact, it does seem that the street, which is straight from the harbor to 5 Cove Street jogs slightly to the left. If it didn't, then there is enough room for 1 Hope Square.
