Dear Lyn, Welcome to the List, Check out the brilliant Dorset OPC site at www.opcdorset.org As the year of birth has been taken fron the census returns then, he would have been born between April 1801 - March 1802, so I think this is your Lucas' baptism from the Corfe Castle pages: 1801 - 01-NOV; Joseph Coffin b.b. s of Elizabeth LUCAS b.b. = base born (i.e illegitimate). It is possible that Coffin was his father's name - it was quite common for the middle name of an illegitimate child to be the father's surname - but this is not always the case, so unless there is other evidence, you can't be certain (It could also be the grandmother's maiden name or an old family name). With regard to the IGI, be very careful as many of the entries are 'submitted' by LDS members and can be extremely suspect. One way to find some of the 'extracted' records is via Hugh Wallis' website. Hugh's site is a direct link to the IGI, but only links to those records that were originally extracted from original parish records and not 'submitted' entries. It is not complete, but can help, obviously the best option is to look up the original records at the DHC (Dorset History Centre) or via microfilm at LDS FHCs (Latter Day Saints Family History Centres). I don't think that there is an actual list of parishes for the IGI on-line, but you can view the Parish & Vital Records List which is on microfiche at a LDS FHC. (The Parish and Vital Records List This lists country by country, and parish by parish, the records available for each parish and from which the IGI has been compiled. I realize the following question isnt Dorset, but if SKS could reply off list The only information I have regarding a paternal grandparent origins is her father and mother were in London, and she was born there. Is there a way to access census records for 1851 & 1861 for London? Search parish records? Is London associated with any particular county? Thank you Don Chinnery Sun City Center FL USA
